The technique, which reproduces the figures of objects from measured data of the objects using 3-D laser scanner, is called reverse engineering. Recently, research studies into applications of reverse engineering to rock engineering are increasing in number, in the discontinuity surveys for rock slopes out of man's reach, or rapid discontinuity surveys for wide range areas. For analysis of discontinuity using reverse engineering, a program for processing point clouds data from the 3-D laser scanner, for sampling from these point clouds data, and finally analyzing the discontinuity is needed. However, existing programs rarely have sufficient functions to properly analyze the discontinuities. In this study, a program was developed, which can automatically sample discontinuities from the point clouds data which measured in a rock slope using a 3-D laser scanner, and which can also undertake statistical analysis of the discontinuities. This developed program was verified by the application of discontinuity surveys in a rock slope and a tunnel. By undertaking the discontinuity survey using a 3-D laser scanner and the developed program, the feasibility and rapidity of such surveys is expected to improve in areas out of man's reach in geotechnical surveys. Taking into consideration the fact that the international level of related techniques is at a rudimentary stage, the possibility of prior occupation of a broad market is also expected.

Oil storage tanks are a major structure in chemical industrial complexes. Damage to the structure due to natural disasters or poor management can cause additional damage, such as leakage of chemicals, fire, and explosion, so it is essential to understand the deformation. In this study, data on oil storage tanks were acquired using a 3D laser scanner, and various analyzes were performed for storage tank management by comparing them with design data. Modeling of the oil storage tank was performed using the data and design drawings acquired by a 3D laser scanner. An inspection of the oil storage tank was effectively performed by overlapping. In addition, cross-sectional and exploded views of the deformation were produced to generate visible data on the deformation of the facility, and it was suggested that the oil storage tank had a maximum deformation of -7.16mm through quantitative analysis. Data that can be used for additional work was obtained by producing drawings to be precisely inspected for areas with large deformation. In the future, an inspection of oil storage tanks using 3D laser scanners is quantitative and visible data on oil storage tank deformation. This will greatly improve the efficiency of facility management by rebuilding it.

In this paper, we present the results of our research to perform 3D laser scanning functions by adding a focusing lens to a conventional 2D laser scanner. For the optical design, the ray-tracing technique was used along with a total of four lenses as the variable incident focusing lens, the collimating lens, and the F-Theta lens. As design variables, the curvature of the incident focusing lens (Lens #1) was assumed to be us, l mm and sumed mm, and the incident angles were set at 0cidenus, l. In addition, the distance between the focusing lens and the collimating lens was set to vary from 5 mm to 15 mm. When the incident focal length was varied from 5 mm to 15 mm, the exit focal length was calculated to vary from 67.5 mm to 56.8 mm for the lens with R = 100 mm and from 108.5 mm to 99.0 mm for the lens with R = 150 mm. When the incident angle was 0°, the focal aberration was only slightly observable at 10㎛ in both the x- and y-direction. At 7.5° was the focal aberration of approximately 20~50㎛ was measured at 20㎛. To investigate the chromatic aberration of the designed optical device, the distortion of the focus was observed when the 550 nm beam was simulated on lens designed for a 980 nm wavelength.

In mineral resource development, resource exploration is a task to find economical minerals on the surface and underground, and the success rate is low compared to the development and production stages, and it is necessary to collect a lot of data through exploration and accurately analyze the collected information. In this study, mine spatial information was constructed using a 3D (Three-dimensional) laser scanner, and accuracy evaluation was performed to obtain a maximum deviation of 0.140 m and an average of 0.095 m in the X, Y and Z directions, and the possibility of utilizing the construction of mine geospatial information through a 3D laser scanner could be presented. In addition, the ore body modeling was performed by applying the interpolation method of the ore body section using the resource exploration results. The ore body modeling result was superimposed with the modeling result of the mine geospatial information built through the 3D laser scanner to construct the ore body modeling result based on the precise mine geospatial information. The results of ore body modeling based on mine geospatial information built through research can increase the ease of data interpretation and the accuracy of the calculated data, which will greatly increase the efficiency of work related to mineral resource development and mine damage prevention in the future.

The mines in our country are complex in geography and shape and because of its small scale, accurate surveying performance and 3D modeling are necessary for mine development and management and mining plans. However, due to the data acquisition and processing technology and economy, the existing methods are currently used. The structure, mining, and mining area of the mine are recorded and managed based on the 2D drawings. As a result, it is true that there is risk of accidents caused by problems of accuracy as well as waste of personnel and time. In recent years, research data on geology and geospatial information on mines have been integrated into a database in foreign countries, and they are used for mine management and mining planning. In this study, we tried to construct spatial information for mining management and mining plan using laser scanner. Through research, spatial information about the mine was effectively obtained and produced data modeled through data processing. The 3D model for mining mines is expected to be a valuable tool for establishing and operating a safe mining plan for mines.
This paper deals with inspecting and monitoring cracks developed on a subway tunnel liner during the construction of temporary supports and excavation. The cracks have developed near a enlarged part of the tunnel. Several measurements, crack gauge, internal displacement measurement, 3-D laser scanner have been conducted to monitor the progress of cracks and effects of them on the tunnel. Local measurement, additional propagation of cracks and deformation of liner, have been conducted by crack gauge and internal displacement measurement. Global inspection has been conducted by 3-D laser scanner. From the scanned data, occurrence of global deformation of tunnel and rail has been evaluated. Because of limited sequence of construction at the ground, no apparent deformation of crack propagation has been measured. As presented in this paper, deformation of tunnel liner and effects of rail need to be investigated in view of local and global aspects.
This study quantitatively analyzes the work performance of the structural safety diagnosis team that diagnoses pipe racks. To this end, a method for evaluating the performance of the structural safety diagnosis team using the queuing model was proposed. For verification, the case of applying the existing method and the method of introducing a 3D laser scanner for one site was used. The period, number of people, and initial investment cost of each project were collected through interviews with case project experts. As a result of analyzing the performance of the structural safety diagnosis team using the queuing model, it was possible to confirm the probability of delay in the work of each project and the amount of delayed work. Through this, the cost (standby cost) when the project was delayed was analyzed. Finally, economic analysis was conducted in consideration of the waiting cost, labor cost, and initial investment cost. The results of this study can be used to decide whether to introduce 3D laser scanners.

The present study introduces a comparison between 3D R-tree and octree which are noticeable candidates to index large point clouds gathered from a 3D terrestrial laser scanner. A query method, which is to find neighboring points within given distances, was devised for the comparison, and time lapses for the query along with memory usages were checked. From tests conducted on point clouds scanned from a building and a stone pagoda, it was shown that octree has the advantage of fast generation and query while 3D R-tree is more memory-efficient. Both index and leaf capacity were revealed to be ruling factors to get the best performance of 3D R-tree, while the number of level was of oetree.

Over- and under-excavation are factors that increase construction cost of tunnels, which makes management essential. Total stations have been used for tunnel surveying because GNSS is difficult to use in tunnels. However, it takes much time to acquire data using total stations. In this study, a total station was integrated with a 3D laser scanner and used for tunnel surveying in Namyangju-si, Gyeonggi-do. The scanning total station reduced the work time compared to the conventional method. Furthermore, reports were effectively generated for overbreak and underbreak for each section and compared with the design. In addition, we could analyze both the cross section and scanned area effectively by using the scanning data. This method can improve the efficiency of tunnel surveying work by combining the advantages of a conventional total station and a 3D laser scanner.

In this study, a reverse design of the F-theta lens was proposed for a 2D scanner in remote welding applications. The curvature and distance of the lens were set as variables, and the focal length of the lens was set as the marginal ray height. The ZEMAX commercial software was used to perform a simulation with unlimited iterations for the optimization process. The target value was optimized using the internal Merit function with the weight factors of focal length and spot diameter. The number of lenses was four, and the focal length obtained from the results was 135mm that is slightly less than that of the commercial lens, which is set with a focal length of 185 mm. The calculated spot diameters are $1.3{\mu}m$, $6.2{\mu}m$, and $16.1{\mu}m$ for $0^{\circ}$, $12.5^{\circ}$ and $23^{\circ}$ of incident laser beam, respectively. It is expected that an optimized lens design is possible by performing the reverse design of a lens by the ray tracing method.
