  • Four ruminally cannulated Holstein steers (BW $482.9{\pm}8.10kg$), fed low protein TMR (CP 11.7%) as a basal diet, were used to investigate changes in rumen fermentation and blood metabolism according to protein fraction, cornell net carbohydrates and protein system (CNCPS), and enriched feeds. The steers, arranged in a $4{\times}4$ Latin square design, consumed TMR only (control), TMR supplemented with rapeseed meal (AB1), soybean meal (B2), and perilla meal (B3C), respectively. The protein feeds were substituted for 23.0% of CP in TMR. Ruminal pH, ammonia-N, and volatile fatty acids (VFA) in rumen digesta, sampled through ruminal cannula at 1 h-interval after the morning feeding, were analyzed. For plasma metabolites analysis, blood was sampled via the jugular vein after the rumen digesta sampling. Different N fraction-enriched protein feeds did not affect (p > 0.05) mean ruminal pH except AB1 being numerically lower 1 - 3 h post-feeding than the other groups. Mean ammonia-N was statistically (p < 0.05) higher for AB1 than for the other groups, but VFA did not differ among the groups. Blood urea nitrogen was statistically (p < 0.05) higher for B2 than for the other groups, which was rather unclear due to relatively low ruminal ammonia-N. This indicates that additional studies on relationships between dietary N fractions and ruminant metabolism according to different levels of CP in a basal diet should be required.

  • In this study, we developed immunoassay methods for the more convenient and effective detection of rat tracheal mucin and the results were compared with those of [$3^H$]glucosamine based gel-filtratioh method. A monoclonal anti-rat tracheal mucin antibody, mAbRT03, which specifically recognizes rat tracheal mucins, was used throughout in this study. To induce mucin secretion, varying concentrations of ATP (0-2 mM) were applied to the primary rat tracheal surface epithelial (RTSE) cell culture which had been metabolically radiolabeled with [$3^H$]glucosamine and the secretion of mucin was analyzed both by the immunoassay and the gel-filtration chromatography methods. For the immunoassay, the following two procedures were employed. 1) Simple ELISA; the culture spent media were directly coated onto the assay plate and the immunoreactivity with mAbRT03 was assessed from the standard curve generated with the purified rat mucin. 2) Inhibition ELISA; A known amount of the purified rat mucin was coated onto the assay plate and then ATP-stimulated culture spent media were added to inhibit the immunorelitivity with mAbRT03. The contents of mucin in the sample were calculated from the standard inhibition curve which was generated with the purified rat mucin. The assay results obtained from the immunoassays were identical with those from the gel-filtration methods. The present result indicates that ELISA can be substituted for the laborious, time-consuming gel-filtration assay in studying the regulation of airway mucin release from cultured airway epithelial cells.

  • Statement of problem. Translucency and masking effect of provisional crown and fixed partial denture materials is an important esthetic consideration. But, provisional resin materials differ substantially in their ability to mask underlying colors. Purpose. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the translucency differences of provisional resin materials at various thicknesses and the correlation between the translucency and the masking efficiency. Material and methods. Two polymethyl methacrylate resins (Jet Tooth Shade, Alike) and three resin composites (Protemp 3 Garant, Luxatemp and Revotek LC) were used. Specimens (n=6) were fabricated from each material in 0.3, 0.5, 0.8, 1.0, 1.5, 2.0 and 3.0 mm thickness. The CIELAB parameters of each specimens were measured using a spectrophotometer. The translucency parameter (TP) values and the masking effect $({\Delta}ME^*{_{ab}})$ values were computed and all data were statistically analyzed by one-way ANOVA and the multiple comparisons Scheffe test. The correlation between the thickness and the TP values and the correlation between the thickness and the ${\Delta}ME^*{_{ab}}$ values were also evaluated by correlation analysis and regression analysis. Results. The TP values and the ${\Delta}ME^*{_{ab}}$ values were significantly related to the thickness in all specimens. The TP values were more sensitive to the change of thickness than the ${\Delta}ME^*{_{ab}}$ values. The order of the translucency by brand was different from the order of the masking effect by brand in all thickness groups. Conclusion. Within the limitations of this study, the translucency and masking effect of the provisional resin materials investigated were significantly related to their thickness. The masking effect of provisional resin was correlated with the translucency parameter, but the order of the masking effect by brand was different from the order of the translucency parameter.

  • The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effect of resin cement color on the color of commercially available zirconia crown. The zirconia and resin cements used for the experiment were $NuSmile^{(R)}$ ZR Zirconia LT Shade (LT), $RelyX^{TM}$ U200 TR, A2, and A3O (TR, A2, A3O). The disks of zirconia and resin cements with diameters of 5 mm and thicknesses of 1 mm were prepared. Five disks were made for each specimen. The CIE $L^*a^*b^*$ values of zirconia, resin cements and the combinations thereof were measured on black and white backgrounds, respectively, using a spectrophotometer. The color effect of resin cement on the color of the zirconia crown was evaluated by calculating translucency parameter (TP), contrast ratio (CR), and color differences (${\Delta}E{^*}_{ab}$) based on the measured CIE $L^*a^*b^*$ values. The statistical significances were verified by one-way ANOVA and the Tukey-multiple comparisons tests. As a result, the TP and CR values were decreased (p<0.05) and increased, respectively, in the combination of zirconia and resin cement disks compared to zirconia disk per se. When using the black background, the ${\Delta}E{^*}_{ab}$ values between zirconia and the combination of the zirconia and three resin cement disks were imperceptible level. The A3O showed the lowest ${\Delta}E{^*}_{ab}$ value among three resin cements. When using the white background, the ${\Delta}E{^*}_{ab}$ values between zirconia and the combination of zirconia and TR resin cement (LT/TR) disks showed acceptable level. However, the ${\Delta}E{^*}_{ab}$ values between zirconia and the combination of zirconia and A2 resin cement (LT/A2) disks showed unacceptable level. Meanwhile, the ${\Delta}E{^*}_{ab}$ values between zirconia and the combination of zirconia and A3O resin cement (LT/A3O) disks showed perceptible but acceptable level. Within the limits of this study, the colors of resin cements did not cause unacceptable color changes of zirconia except the combination of LT/A2 on the white background. The resin cement that gave the least color changes to zirconia was A3O. This means that the resin cement A3O is recommended to use for minimizing color changes when cementing commercially available zirconia crown to tooth.

  • Hydrogen atom transfer reactions, $RNH_2+CH_3{\to}RNH+CH_4\;where\;R=H\;and\;CH_3$, were studied by MINDO/3 MO method. It is expected that stable complex may exist between $CH_3\;and\;NH_3$. Transition state characteristics and activation parameters including activation entropies have been determined. In cases of absolute and activation entropies, results are found to agree in general with ab initio and experimental values, wherever comparisions are possible.

  • To evaluate the meaning of anti-HCV detection in patients treated with IVIG, serum levels of aspartate aminotranstferase(AST), alanine aminotransterase(ALT), HCV Ab titer were measured after treatment with IVIG in 36 patients diagnised of Kawasaki disease or neonatal sepsis. Also polymerase chain reaction (PCR) for the detection of HCV was done in 8 patients with persistent HCV Ab positivity at 3 months after IVIG treatment. The results were as follows 1) HCV Ab was positive in all 36 patients at 1 week after IVIG treatment, but in only 8 cases it was positive at 3 months after IVIG treatment. 2) AST, ALT were elevated in 9 cases at 1 week after IVIG treatment, but they were normalized in all cases at 3 months after IVIG treatment. 3) PCR for the detection of HCV was done in 8 patients with persistent HCV Ab positivity at 3 months after IVIG treatment, but HCV was not isolated in any cases. These results suggested that detection of anti-HCV was merely transitory phenominon of HCV Ab transmission, did not show any evidence of HCV infection due to HCV transmission.

  • The development of a microprocessor-controlled centreless grinding station has opened the way for the production of automobile camshafts-from raw casting to precision-finished part-as a fully automated operation. This results in manufacture to finer tolerances, with part-to-part consistency and a floor-to-floor time of half that needed for alternative production methods. Shafts with a grinding length of up to 700 mm can be processed.

  • In recent years there has been much interest in the study of groups satisfying various permutability conditions (see, for instance, [1], [2] and [3]). More recently, the following condition has been studied: for some , if S is any subset of m elements of a group G, then $$\mid$S^2$\mid$ < m^2$ (where, for subsets A, B of G, AB stands for ${ab; a \in A, b \in B}$).

  • The spectroscopic properties of $FO^+$ and FO were investigated by ab initio calculation. Several different levels of theory, $MP3/6-31G^*,\;MP4/6-311G^*\;and\;CISD/6-31G^*$, were tried and compared with experimental results of FO. In the overall performance the CISD showed the best agreement. Based on these results the spectroscopic constants of $FO^+$ are predicted.
