  • Digital servo implementation in optical servo chip has been spotlighted since it is easy to integrate with other blocks and it has less sensitive characteristics change in terms of temperature variation and better flexibility to the system variation like pick-up. Therefore, Optical disc players adopted digital servo are increasing in market. However, one drawback of digital signal processor embedded digital servo is power consumption that is one of the most important factors of portable optical disc player system. For that reason, this paper introduces new architecture to reduce power consumption of digital servo by means of reducing DSP load but increasing minimum hardware size. The main idea of reducing power consumption of digital servo greatly is utilizing CDP characteristics as most operations are done and used up most operating steps of DSP at the initial time, but most power consumption is occurred in play mode. Therefore, if operating steps for digital filtering in play mode could be reduced greatly, power consumption of overall system can be reduced greatly. This paper shows an example that low power digital servo architecture whose current is reduced almost 83%, compare to that of digital servo which is not applied by the low power architecture introduced in this paper.

  • This paper describes and analyzes IBC (intra block copy) in HEVC (high efficiency video coding) SCC (screen content coding) to improve the coding efficiency of IBC. HEVC SCC reference software SCM 2 is employed to analyze the selection ratio of IBC which is newly adopted in HEVC SCC, and the tools for IBC such as the block vector prediction and block vector coding method are evaluated. Experimental results show the average IBC selection ratio is 31.08% and 0.33% in I-Slice and B-Slice, respectively. Based on this results, the coding efficiency of IBC could be improved by utilizing IBC selectively. In addition, analysis tests of block vector prediction and the block vector coding method show the current methods are not efficient to screen content videos, and the analysis results are presented to improve these methods.

  • An experimental study has been conducted to evaluate the effects of average and cyclic shear stresses on the undrained failure behaviors of dense marine silty sand by using the Cyclic Direct Simple Shear apparatus. The results show that when the average shear stress ratio is zero, symmetric cyclic shear deformation is the major component of deformation, and permanent shear deformation is relatively small. On the other hand, when the average shear stress ratio is larger than zero, asymmetric permanent shear deformation is the major component, and cyclic shear deformation does not change much as the number of cyclic loads increases. The average shear stress ratio has less effects on the number of cyclic loads needed to fail, as compared with the cyclic shear stress ratio. The proposed stress-dependent failure contour can effectively be used to assess the cyclic shear strength of soil beneath the foundation for the design of offshore structures.

  • This paper investigates the applicability of a piezoelectric cantilever for energy supply of wireless sensor node used in structural health monitoring of bridges. By combining the constitutive equation of piezoelectric material and the dynamic equation of cantilever structure, the coupled governing equation for cantilever equipped piezoelectric patches has been addressed in matrix form. Forced excitation tests were carried out to validate the numerical model and to investigate the power output characteristics of the energy harvester. From the numerical simulation based on the measured bridge accelerations under KTX, Saemaul, Mugunghwa trains, the peak powers generated from the device were found to be 28.5 mW, 0.65 mW, 0.51 mW respectively. It is revealed from the results that bridge vibrations caused by moving loads is not a practical source for energy harvesting because of its low acceleration level, low frequency and short duration.

  • Application of combustion stabilization devices such as baffle and acoustic cavity to liquid propellant rocket engine is investigated to suppress high-frequency combustion instability, i.e., acoustic instability. First, these damping devices are designed based on linear damping theory. As a principal design parameter, damping factor is considered and calculated numerically in the chambers with/without these devices. Next, the unbaffled chambers with/without acoustic cavities are tested experimentally for several operating conditions. The unbaffled chamber shows the peculiar stability characteristics depending on the operating condition and it is found to have small dynamic stability margin. As a result, the acoustic cavity with the present design has little stabilization effect in this specific chamber. Finally, stability rating tests are conducted with the baffled chamber, where evident combustion stabilization is observed, which indicates sufficient damping effect.

  • The room modes were showed as the peaks and dips on the low frequency response of the loudspeaker, and were one of the biggest obstacles to reproduce the sound. In order to reduce the occurrence of resonance, equalizing is performed at one position, and the frequency response to be equalized is valid only at that position. Performing the equalization would improve the flatness of the frequency response a little, but it cannot eliminate the ringing. Another method is that it is located the speaker at the specific position where the room resonances were not frequently happened. However, there may be the practical limitation that you may not be able to install the speaker at the position to be wanted. One of the practical solutions to decrease the production of resonance in room is the use of bass trap. In this paper, the practical limit for the room tuning using an equalizer and the room optimization will be discussed. The use of bass traps to solve the resonance problem that is always happened in the room is also proposed.

  • In this study, we investigated the kinematical properties of the L1521F-IRS in Taurus region using HCN (J=1-0) molecular line. The high resolution mapping has carried out by $5{\times}5$ point observations covering $3.7'{\times}3.7'$ area using a 12-m telescope of Arizona Radio Observatory in Tucsan, USA. L1521F which harbors the faint infrared L1521F-IRS, displayed a strong central concentration of integrated intensity in HCN without serious molecular depletion. It showed a symmetric kinematical structure with the opposite infall motion in either side of the central cores. It is a direct evidence of bipolar outflows in the core of L1521F.

  • This paper presents the results of test observations toward a point source, 4C39.25, for observation modes with various bandwidths and numbers of IF streams in order to examine a reliability of the Daejeon hardware correlator performance for correlating VLBI (Very Long Baseline Interferometry) data obtained with the several observation modes of the KVN (Korean VLBI Network). We used a DiFX software correlator (DiFX) as a reference, for investigating the output visibilities from the Daejeon corelator. It is found that the band shapes of the output visibilities from two correlators are similar to each other and the correlated flux density for each baseline obtained from the Daejeon hardware correlator is lower by 3 - 7% than that from the DiFX. The flux difference is attributed to the limitation of FPGA resources and the difference of fringe rotation algorithm of the Daejeon hardware correlator. The conversion factor, 0.93 ~ 0.97, is proposed for future correlation with the Daejeon hardware correlator.

  • Recently, geotechnical engineering researches have been conducted on the Limit State Design (LSD) for deep and shallow foundations; however, there are very few studies on the retaining wall. As a basic study for the introduction of the LSD of a railway retaining wall, this study evaluates whether the reliability index satisfies the target reliability index for each failure mode in the standard drawing of the retaining wall. It also analyzes the feasibility of the LSD method by using the Load and Resistance Factor Design (LRFD) for the standard drawing of a retaining wall. In a portion of the standard drawing of the railway retaining wall, the reliability indices of the sliding and bearing capacity failure modes did not satisfy the target reliability index, and could not satisfy the limit state by the LRFD. Hence, the standard drawing of the railway retaining wall will need to be revised if the LSD is to be applied.
