  • 304L stainless steel sheets are used as a primary barrier for the insulation of membrane-type liquefied natural gas(LNG) carrier cargo containment system. 304L stainless steel is a transformation-induced-plasticity(TRIP) steel that exhibits complex material behavior, because it undergoes phase transformation during plastic deformation. Since the TRIP behavior is very important mechanical characteristics in a low-temperature environment, significant amounts of data are available in the literature. In the present study, a uniaxial tensile test for 304L stainless steel was performed to investigate nonlinear mechanical characteristics. In addition, a viscoplastic model and damage model is proposed to predict material fractures under arbitrary loads. The verification was conducted not only by a material-based comparative study involving experimental investigations, but also by a structural application to the LNG membrane of a Mark-III-type cargo containment system.

  • In these days, with development of industry, the use of machines and structures like ships, airplanes, bridges, power plants, and structure for construction has increased and these machines and structures are used in various corrosive environment. Especially, in case of STS 304, which is material for every kind of machine and chemical plant, it makes many problems related with corrosion and as a result of this, there are happening tremendous economic loss. Therefor, in this study, the test for polarization characteristics was carried out to study characteristics of crevice corrosion of STS 304 which is austenitic stainless steel, in NaCl environment. The main results obtained are as follows :1) Part of crevice is corroded, neighboring outside surface of crevice is passivation. 2) In polarization behavior, corrosion potential of STS 304 become more noble as the concentration of NaCl solution increased by 3.5% but the concentration increased over 3.5% that of STS 3.4 become less noble. 3) The current density under corrosion potential was high drained as concentration of NaCl solution increased by 3.5% but the concentration increased over 3.5%, the current density was low drained.

  • The core shroud of rector vessel internals (RVI) of OPR1000 and ARP1400 is made of Type 304 stainless steel (SS) by bending and welding process that may induce high deformation and residual stress in manufacturing. This work aims to evaluate the susceptibility of stress corrosion crack (SCC) initiation of bent parts of RVI in high temperature primary water environment. For SCC initiation test, tensile specimens were fabricated from the 90 degree bent plate of Type 304 SS (DT specimen), that is an archived part of a Korean APR1400. After the SCC initiation test, the specimen surface was thoroughly examined by optical and scanning electron microscopy, and compared to the specimen fabricated from the as-received plate of Type 304 SS (AR specimen). The surface observation revealed that SCC initiated on the AR specimen surface in typical intergranular (IG) mode, while SCC on the DT specimen occurred in transgrannular mode as well as IG mode. It was also found that the size and number of SCC on the DT specimen were larger than that on the AR specimen. This was attributable to a strain-hardening during the bending process. To compare the susceptibility of SCC initiation, total crack density (TCD) was calculated from the total crack length divided by the measured area of AR and DT specimens. TCD of DT specimen was 4.6 times higher than AR specimen in average, indicating that higher possibility of degradation of bent parts of RVI for a long-term operation.

  • Plasma ion nitriding has been widely used in various industries to improve the mechanical properties of materials, especially stainless steels by increasing the surface hardness. It has the particular advantages of less distortion compared to that in the case of hardening of steel, gas nitriding, and carburizing; in addition, it allows treatment at low-temperatures, and results in a high surface hardness and improved corrosion resistance. Many researchers have demonstrated that the plasma ion nitriding process should be carried out at temperatures of below $450^{\circ}C$ to improve corrosion resistance via the formation of the expanded austenite phase(S-phase). Most experimentals studied to date have been carried out in chloride solutions like HCl or NaCl. However, the electrochemical characteristics for the chloride solutions and natural seawater differ. Hence, in this work, plasma ion nitriding of 304 stainless steels was performed at various temperatures, and the electrochemical characteristics corresponding to the different process temperatures were analyzed for the samples in natural seawater. Finally the optimum plasma ion nitriding temperature that resulted in the highest corrosion resistance was determined.

  • Three-point bending fatigue properties of austenitic 304 stainless steel sheets were investigated at room temperature and LNG temperature($-162^{\circ}C$) in the strain range from 0.43 to $1.7\%$. The fatigue properties at $-162^{\circ}C$ were superior to those at room temperature due to the higher volume fractions of deformation-induced martensite. The cyclic hardening behavior owing to the deformation- induced martensite transformation was detected in both specimens. In room temperature testing, the mean load amplitude increased steadily with cycles, meaning that cumulative plastic incubation strain was required for martensite transformation. On the contrary, in $-162^{\circ}C$ tested specimen, the mean load amplitude increased rapidly within a few cycles due to the rapid transformation of martensite, and slightly decreased after the maximum is reached probably due to dynamic recovery.

  • Vacuum brazing is the most modern brazing process and is at present, far from being completely understood. By brazing under high vacuum, in an atmosphere free of oxidizing gases, a superior product with greater strength, ductility and uniformity can be obtained. In this study, the influence of brazing parameters such as base metal characteristics, joint clearance and brazing time were described in relation to the metallurgical phenomena and shear strength of vacuum-brazed joints between carbon steels and 304 stainless steel (SUS 304) brazed by copper filler metal. In copper brazing of SUS 304 to a medium carbon steel(M.C.S) the columnar Fe-Cr-Ni-Cu-C alloy structure was formed and grew from the M.C.S side and at the same time, the surface of M.C.S. was decarbonized. The driving force for the formation and growth of columnar structure was the difference of carbon content between base metals. As the joint clearance is narrower and brazing time is longer, the formation and growth of columnar phase and decarburization of carbon steels were more noticeable. Because of decarburization of carbon steels, the shear strength of brazed joints were reduced as the formation of columnar structure was increased.

  • The tensile tests to identify the statistical tensile properties and the acoustic emission characteristics were conducted for STS304 stainless steel at $600^{\circ}C,\;700^{\circ}C$. From tensile tests performed by constant cross head speed controls with 1mm/min, rates at each elevated temperature, the scatters were observed in tensile strength, reduction of area, elongation and the acoustic emission parameters. The effect of temperature on the scatter of tensile behavior was larger at $700^{\circ}C$. The distributions of tensile properties was well followed in 3-parameter Weibull. The AE counts and energy of the $700^{\circ}C$ specimens were smaller than the $600^{\circ}C$.

  • The flow stress of 304 stainless steel during hot forming process were determined by conducting hot compression tests at the range of 1273 K∼1423 K and 0.05 /s∼2.0 /s as these are typical temperature and strain rate in hot forging operation. In this material, Dynamic recrystallization was found to be the major softening mechanism with this conditions as Previous studies. Based on the observed phenomena, a constitutive model of flow stress was assumed as a function of strain, strain rate, temperature. In the constitutive model, the effects of strain hardening and dynamic recrystallization were taken into consideration. A finite element method connected to constitutive model was performed to predict the dynamic recrystallization behaviors and also stress-strain curves in hot compression of 304 stainless steel.

  • This investigation evaluated the effect of cavitation condition on electrochemical characteristics of 304 stainless steel, which is widely used for marine environment. The cavitation test with time were conducted on 304 stainless steel in seawater solution. Surface morphologies of specimen were observed by scanning electron microscope (SEM) and 3D microscope. Pitting depth, weight loss and damage rate were analyzed after each cavitation experiment. The surface damage was more severe as the current density increased. A dramatical increase in the damage depth and weight loss was observed after 7 hours of cavitation experiment.
