The supersonic flow around tandem cavities was investigated by three- dimensional numerical simulations using the Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes(RANS) equation with the $\kappa-\omega$ thrbulence model. The flow around a cavity is characterized as unsteady flow because of the formation and dissipation of vortices due to the interaction between the freestream shear layer and cavity internal flow, the generation of shock and expansion waves, and the acoustic effect transmitted from wake flow to upstream. The upwind TVD scheme based on the flux vector split using van Leer's limiter was used as the numerical method. Numerical calculations were performed by the parallel processing with time discretizations carried out by the 4th-order Runge-Kutta method. The aspect ratio of cavities are 3 for the first cavity and 1 for the second cavity. The ratio of cavity interval to depth is 1. The ratio of cavity width to depth is 1 in the case of three dimensional flow. The Mach number and the Reynolds number were 1.5 and $4.5{\times}10^5$, respectively. The characteristics of the dominant frequency between two-dimensional and three-dimensional flows were compared, and the characteristics of the second cavity flow due to the fire cavity flow cavity flow was analyzed. Both two dimensional and three dimensional flow oscillations were in the 'shear layer mode', which is based on the feedback mechanism of Rossiter's formula. However, three dimensional flow was much less turbulent than two dimensional flow, depending on whether it could inflow and outflow laterally. The dominant frequencies of the two dimensional flow and three dimensional flows coincided with Rossiter's 2nd mode frequency. The another dominant frequency of the three dimensional flow corresponded to Rossiter's 1st mode frequency.
Missile am fighter aircraft have been challenged by low restoring nose-down pitching moment at high angle of attach. The consequence of weak nose-down pitching moment can be resulting in a deep stall condition. Especially, the pressure oscillation has a huge effect on noise generation, structure damage, aerodynamic performance and safety, because the flow has strong unsteadiness at high angle of attack. In this paper, the unsteady aerodynamics coefficients were analyzed at high angle of attack up to 60 degrees around two dimensional NACA0012 airfoil. The two dimensional unsteady compressible Navier-Stokes equation with a LES turbulent model was calculated by OHOC (Optimized High-Order Compact) scheme. The flow conditions are Mach number of 0.3 and Reynolds number of $10^5$. The lift, drag, pressure distribution, etc. are analyzed according to the angle of attack. The results at a low angle of attack are compared with other results before a stall condition. From a certain high angle of attack, the strong vortex formed by the leading edge are flowing downstream as like Karman vortex around a circular cylinder. Unsteady velocity field, periodic vortex shedding, the unsteady pressure distribution on the airfoil surface, and the acoustic fields are analyzed. The effects of these unsteady characteristics in the aerodynamic coefficients are analyzed.

The primary and secondary oscillating frequencies are analyzed by the effects of these unsteady aerodynamic characteristics.
Two-dimensional incompressible Navier-Stokes equations are solved using SIMPLER method in the intrinsic curvilinear coordinates system to study the unsteady viscous flow physics over two-dimensional ellipses. Unsteady viscous flows over various thickness-to-chord ratios of 0.6, 0.8, 1.0, and 1.2 elliptic cylinders are simulated at different Reynolds numbers of 200, 400, and 1,000. This study is focused on the understanding the effects of Reynolds number and elliptic cylinder thickness on the drag and lift forces. The present numerical solutions are compared with available experimental and numerical results and show a good agreement. Through this study, it is observed that the Reynolds number and the cylinder thickness affect significantly the frequencies of the force oscillations as well as the mean values and the amplitudes of the drag and lift forces.

The transient incompressible flow behind the axisymmetric bluff body is numerically simulated using the random vortex method(RVM). Based on the vorticity formulation of the unsteady Navier-Stokes equations, the Lagrangian approach with a stochastic simulation of diffusion using random walk technique is employed to account for the transport processes of the vortex elements. The numerical solutions for 2-dimensional recirculating flow behind a backward-facing step in the laminar range of Reynolds number are compared with experimental data. The present simulation focuses on the transitional flow regime where the recirculation zone behind the bluff body becomes highly unsteady and large-scale vortex eddies are shed from the bluff body wake due to intrinsic shear layer instabilities. The unsteady vertical flow structures and the mixing characteristics behind the bluff body are discussed in detail.
An unstructured hybrid mesh flow solver has been developed for the simulations of three dimensional steady and unsteady incompressible flow fields. The incompressible Navier-Stokes equations with an artificial compressibility method were discretized by using a node-based finite-volume method. For the unsteady time-accurate computation, a dual-time stepping method was adopted to satisfy a divergence free flow field at each physical time step. The one equation Spalart-Allmaras turbulence model has been adopted to solve the high-Reynolds number flow fields. This method has been applied to calculate the steady flow fields around submarine configurations and unsteady flow fields around a 3-D infinite cylinder.
Generally flight vehicles have many cavities such as wheel wells, bomb bays and windows on their external surfaces and the flow around these cavities makes separation, vortex, shock and expansion waves, reattachment and other complex flow phenomenon. The flow around the cavity makes abnormal and three-dimensional noise and vibration even thought the aspect ratio (L/D) is small. The cavity giving large effects to the flow might make large noise, cause structural damage or breakage, harm the aerodynamic performance and stability, or damage the sensitive devices. In this study, numerical analysis was performed for cavity flows by the unsteady compressible three dimensional Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) equations with Wilcox's $\kappa-\omega$ turbulence model. The MPI(Message Passing Interface) parallelized code was used for calculations by PC-cluster. The cavity has the aspect ratios of 2.5, 3.5 and 4.5 with the W/D ratio of 2 for three-dimensional cavities. The Sound Pressure Level (SPL) analysis was done with FFT to check the dominant frequency of the cavity flow. The dominant frequencies were analyzed and compared with the results of Rossiter's formula and Ahuja& Mendoza's experimental datum.

The ducted fan for a small UAV propulsion can reconnoiter and observe in a town and a small area, it has better thrust efficiency and a long endurance than propeller. Thrust characteristics of hover and for ward flight condition for the ducted fan UAV is important issue to improve a endurance. The unsteady 3-dimensional flow fields of the ducted fan UAV is essential to stable flight. In this paper, to verify the design results of the ducted fan and to investigate a stable aeronautical characteristic, the thrust performance and the unsteady 3-dimensional flow fields are measured. Thrust characteristics for the hovering and the forward flight conditions are measured by the 6-components balance system in the subsonic wind tunnel. The unsteady 3-dimensional flow fields are analyzed by using a stationary $45^{\circ}$ slanted hot-wire technique. The swirl velocity is almost removed behind the stator blades. Therefore, the thrust performance of the ducted fan is improved and the flight stability is maintained.
In order to study unsteady aerodynamic loads on high speed trains passing by each other at the speed of 350km/h, three-dimensional flow fields around trains during the crossing event are numerically simulated using the three-dimensional Euler equations. The Roe's FDS with MUSCL interpolation is employed to simulate wave phenomena properly. An efficient moving grid system based on domain decomposition techniques is developed to analyze the unsteady flow field induced by the restricted motion of a train on a rail. The numerical simulations of the trains passing by on the double-track are carried out to study the effect of the train nose-shape, the train length and the existence of tunnel when the crossing event occur. Unsteady aerodynamic loads side force and drag force-acting on the train during the crossing are numerically predicted and anlayzed. It is found that the strength of the side force mainly depends on the nose-shape, and that of drag force on tunnel existence. And it is observed that the push-pull like impulsive force successively acts on each car and acts in different directions between the neighborhood cars. The maximum change of the impulsive force reaches about 3 tons. These aerodynamic force data are absolutely necessary for the evaluation of the stability of the high speed multi-car train. The results also indicate the effectiveness of the present numerical method for the simulation of unsteady flow field induced by the bodies in the relative motion.
An unstructured hybrid mesh flow solver has been developed for the simulation of three-dimensional steady and unsteady incompressible flow fields. The incompressible Navier-Stokes equations with an artificial compressibility method were discretized by using a node-based finite-volume method. For the unsteady time-accurate computation, a dual-time stepping method was adopted to satisfy a divergence-free flow field at each physical time step. An implicit time integration method with local time stepping was implemented to accelerate the convergence in the pseudo-time sub-iteration procedure. The one-equation Spalart-Allmaras turbulence model has been adopted to solve high-Reynolds number flow fields. The flow solver was parallelized to minimize the CPU time and to overcome the computational overhead. This method has been applied to calculate steady and unsteady flow fields around submarine configurations and a 3-D infinite cylinder. Validations were made by comparing the predicted results with those of experiments or other numerical results. It was demonstrated that the present method is efficient and robust for the prediction of steady and unsteady incompressible flow fields.
