  • Among the most of manufacturing process, plastic deformation method offers a significant advantage in productivity and enable mass production with controlled quality and low cost. From the point of view, micro forming is a well suited technology in manufacturing very small metallic parts, in particular for mass production, as they are required in many industrial products. Meanwhile, Al 5083 superplastic alloy with very small grains has a great advantage in achieving micro deformation under low stress due to its relatively low strength at a specific high temperature range. This paper describes the micro formability of Al 5083 superplastic alloy and its application to die forging of micro patterns. Micro formability tests of Al 5083 superplastic alloy were carried out with the specially designed micro forging system by using V-grooved micro dies and pyramidal dies made of (100) silicon. With these dies, micro forging was conducted by varying the applied load, material temperature and forging time The micro formability of Al 5083 superplastic alloy was evaluated by comparing $R_f$ value, where $R_f\;=\;A_f/A_v$ ($A_v$ : cross-sectional area of the flowed metal, $A_v$ : cross sectional area of V-groove). The micro formability of 3 dimensional Patterns was also evaluated using Pyramidal type micro dies.

  • We performed 3 dimensional numerical study on the improvement of the airflow deflection in the cleanroom of Class 1000, which is presently operated for the manufacturing process in Korea. The Deflection angle and the non-uniformity were investigated to analyze the airflow characteristics and the performance of cleanroom with variations of the cleanroom occupancy state, the filters' arrangement, and the floor return air system. From the numerical results, we found out that the airflow pattern of the cleanroom is more unidirectional and stable in the condition of at-rest than in the condition of as~built. It is due to that the equipments installed in the cleanroom play a role like partitions, which prevent the airflow from inclining toward the recirculation air duct. And it is needed to arrange the filter units parallel to the equipments array without a gap between them for maintaining the unidirectional airflow pattern. Finally, we knew that it is very important to install the partition like the eyelid above the equipment to keep the unidirectional airflow around the equipments and remove the contaminants quickly.

  • Stress state of chip formation zone is one of the main problems in metal cutting mechanics. In two-dimensional case this process is usually considered as consistent shears of work material along one of several shear surfaces, separating chip from workpiece. These shear planes are assumed to be trajectories of maximum shear stress forming corresponding slip-line field. This paper suggests a new approach to the constriction of slip-line field, which implies uniform compression in chip formation zone. Based on the given model it has been found that imaginary shear line in orthogonal cutting is close to the trajectory of maximum normal stress and the problem about its determination has been considered as well. It has been shown that there is a second central slip-line field inside chip, which corresponds well to experimental data about stress distribution on tool rake face and tool-chip contact length. The suggested model would be useful in understanding mechanistic problems in machining.

  • In order to produce high-quality optical components, aspheric lenses have been widely applied in recent years. An aspheric lens consists of aspheric surfaces instead of spherical ones, which causes difficulty in the design process as well as the manufacturing procedure. Although injection molding is widely used to fabricate optical lenses owing to its high productivity, there remains lots of difficulty to determine appropriate mold design factors and injection molding parameters. In the injection molding fields, computer simulation has been effectively applied to analyze processes based on the shell analysis so far. Considering the geometry of optical lenses, however, numerical analysis based on solid elements has been reported as more reliable approach than shell -based one. The present work covers three-dimensional injection molding simulation using MP1/Flow3D and relevant deformation analysis of an injection molded plastic lens based on solid elements. Numerical analysis has been applied to the injection molding processes of an aspheric lens for a photo pick-up device. The reliability of the proposed approach has been verified in comparison with the experiments.

  • Data-driven engineering is crucial for information delivery between design, fabrication, assembly, and maintenance of prefabricated structures. Design for manufacturing and assembly (DfMA) is a critical methodology for prefabricated bridge structures. In this study, a novel concept of digital engineering model that combined existing knowledge of DfMA with object-oriented parametric modeling technologies was developed. Three-dimensional (3D) geometry models and their data models for each phase of a construction project were defined for information delivery. Digital design models were used for conceptual design, including aesthetic consideration and possible variation during fabrication and assembly. The seismic performance of a bridge pier was evaluated by linking the design parameters to the calculated moment-curvature curves. Control parameters were selected to consider the tolerance control and revision of the digital models. Digitalized fabrication of the prefabricated members was realized using the digital fabrication model with G-code for a concrete printer or a robot. The fabrication error was evaluated and the design digital models were updated. The revised fabrication models were used in the preassembly simulation to guarantee constructability. For the maintenance of the bridge, the as-built information was defined for the prefabricated bridge piers. The results of this process revealed that data-driven information delivery is crucial for lifecycle management of prefabricated bridge piers.

  • This study aimed to create 3D-printed insoles for flat-footed senior men using 3D systems. 3D systems are product-manufacturing systems that use 3-dimensional technologies like 3D scanning, 3D modeling, and 3D printing. This study used a 3D scanner (NexScan2), 3D CAD programs including Rapidform, AutoCAD, SolidWorks, Nauta+ compiling program, and a 3D printer. In order to create insoles for flat-footed senior men, we analyzed horizontal sections of 3D foot scans We selected 20 flat-footed and 20 normal-footed subjects. To make the 3D insole models, we sliced nine lines on the surface of the subjects' 3D foot scans, and plotted 144 points on the lines. We calculated the average of these 3D coordinates, then located this average within the 3D space of the AutoCAD program and created 3D sole models using the loft surface tools of the SolidWorks program. The sole models for flat feet differed from those of normal feet in the depth of the arch at the inner sideline and the big toe line. We placed the normal-footed sole model on a flat-footed sole model, and the combination of the two models resulted in the 3D insole for flat feet. We printed the 3D modeled insole using a 3D printer. The 3D printing material was an acrylic resin similar to rubber. This made the insole model flexible and wearable. This study utilized 3D systems to create 3D insoles for flat-footed seniors and this process can be applied to manufacture other items in the fashion industry as well.

  • Foods are becoming more customized and consumers demand food that provides great taste and appearance and that improves health. Food three-dimensional (3D)-printing technology has a great potential to manufacture food products with customized shape, texture, color, flavor, and even nutrition. Food materials for 3D-printing do not rely on the concentration of the manufacturing processes of a product in a single step, but it is associated with the design of food with textures and potentially enhanced nutritional value. The potential uses of food 3D-printing can be forecasted through the three following levels of industry: consumer-produced foods, small-scale food production, and industrial scale food production. Consumer-produced foods would be made in the kitchen, a traditional setting using a nontraditional tool. Small-scale food production would include shops, restaurants, bakeries, and other institutions which produce food for tens to thousands of individuals. Industrial scale production would be for the mass consumer market of hundreds of thousands of consumers. For this reason, food 3D-printing could make an impact on food for personalized nutrition, on-demand food fabrication, food processing technologies, and process design in food industry in the future. This article review on food materials for 3D-printing, rheology control of food, 3D-printing system for food fabrication, 3D-printing based on molecular cuisine, 3D-printing mobile platform for customized food, and future trends in the food market.

  • The life of conventional steel plastic injection molds is long but manufacturing cost and time are prohibitive for using these molds for producing prototypes of products in limited numbers. Commonly used 3D printers and rapid prototyping methods are capable of directly converting the digital models of three-dimensional solid objects into solid physical parts. Depending on the 3D printer, the final product can be made from different material, such as polymer or metal. Rapid prototyping of parts with the polymeric material is typically cheaper, faster and convenient. However, the life of a polymer mold can be less than a hundred parts. Failure of a polymeric mold during the injection molding process can result in serious safety issues considering very large forces and temperatures are involved. In this study, the feasibility of the inspection of 3D printed molds with the surface response to excitation (SuRE) method was investigated. The SuRE method was originally developed for structural health monitoring and load monitoring in thin-walled plate-like structures. In this study, first, the SuRE method was used to evaluate if the variation of the strain could be monitored when loads were applied to the center of the 3D printed molds. After the successful results were obtained, the SuRE method was used to monitor the artifact (artificial damage) created at the 3D printed mold. The results showed that the SuRE method is a cost effective and robust approach for monitoring the condition of the 3D printed molds.
