To investigate mechanical property on the low temperature plate weld metal, the two different plates of the same steel grade were welded and evaluated on the multiple pass welds and both side one run welds with different Mo contents welding consumables. The results are summarized as follows; 1) Welds made by no Mo containing wire showed very low impact values for type of material company. 2) Welds made by 0.25%Mo containing wire showed good impact value regardless of both side one run welds and multiple pass welds. 3) Welds made by 0.5%Mo containing wire showed good impact value for both side one run welds, while it was not acceptable value for multiple pass welds.
In this paper weld distortion both in butt and fillet welds by flux cored arc welding has been investigated by changing welding parameters such as heat input and plate thickness, and the weld distortion was expressed as a function of welding parameters adopting the inherent strain theory as proposed by Watanabe and Satoh in 1961. As results of the research it is proposed that transverse shrinkage in root pass butt welds in proportional to ln[(Q/t_-tan.theta.] where Q is heat input(cal/mm), t is plate thickness(mm), and 2.theta. is groove angle(degree), and angular distortion .phi.(radian) in one pass of fillet welds has the following relationship: .phi..var.(Q/ $t^{1.5}$)$^{3}$exp[-(Q/ $t^{1.5}$ )$^{2}$3/] These equations provide us with basic tools to predict the amount of weld distortion in welded structures.
While excellent joint quality has been obtained using dry chamber underwater welding methods, the size limitations imposed by this process restrict its use for underwater construction work. The wet underwater shielded metal-arc welding eliminates this restriction but suffers from poor weld properties by the 1-pass bead-on-plate welding due to the excessive diffusible hydrogen. On the other hand, in the wet underwater welding, it is well known that the quantity of diffusible hydrogen in multi-pass welded parts reduce to less than that in 1-pass welded parts. Therefore, in this paper, welding experiments are made the 3-pass bead-on-plate welds by using TMCP and normalized steel plates and E4301 and cellulose coated electrode. After that, The amounts of the hydrogen absorbed into the 3-pass welded area were measured according to the JIS Z 3118 specification. The microstructural changes as well as the microhardness distribution after the underwater 3-pass welding were also investigated using Vickers microhardness tester and S.E.M and O.M. The results indicated that the quantity of diffusible hydrogen in 3-pass welded areas was reduced little less than a half of one of that in 1-pass welded areas at the specific welding condition. As a result, the cold cracking of 3-pass welded areas decreased by reduced effect of diffusible hydrogen. In the underwater 3-pass welding, the micrography of cold cracking fracture surface showed mainly the cleavage of hydrogen embrittlement.

Generally the factors affected largely by the cold cracking sensitivity of the weld are the quantity of the diffusible hydrogen, the brittleness and hardness of the bond area and the tensile restraint stress. These factors have relation each other, and if we can reduce one of these factors, it becomes instrumental to the root cracks prevention of weld. This study deals with the gravity type-underwater-welding of KR Grade A-3 marine steel plate using E4303 welding electrode in order to compare wet-underwater-welding with in-air- welding, resulting in obtaining the tensile restraint characteristics, the hardness distribution, the quantity of diffusible hydrogen and the macro- and micro-crack properties in both underwater and in-air welds. The main results obtained are as follows: 1) The quantity of diffusible hydrogen measured for 48 hours is about 18cc/100g-weld-metal for the in-air-weld of one pass and about 48cc/100g-weld-metal for the underwater-weld of one pass which is about 3 times penetration of diffusible hydrogen compairing with the case of the in-air-weld. However, it was experimentally confirmed that, by the multi-pass welding of 2 to 5 passes, the diffusible hydrogen in the underwater weld metal can be reduced as much as 27 to 49%. 2) The hardness of the weld metal indicates the highest value in the heat affected zones of underwater weld for more rapid cooling rate, resulting in the higher sensitivity of cold cracking. So, it is desirable to soften the higher hardness in the HAZ by tempering effect such as the multi-pass welding in the underwater welding. 3) At the bond vicinity of the underwater weld HAZ, micro cracks were found as resulted by both more rapid cooling rate and more diffusible hydrogen and also by the stress corrosion cracking under the tensile restraint stress in the underwater. But this could be prevented by the tempering effect of the following weld bead such as the multi-pass welding.
Finite element models were developed for thermal and residual stress analysis for the specific welding problems. They were used to evaluate the effectiveness of the various welding heat input models, such as ramp heat input function and lumped pass models. Through the parametric studies, thermal-mechanical modeling sensitivity to the ramp function and lumping techniques was determined by comparing the predicted results with experimental data. The kinetics for residual stress formation during welding can be developed by iteration of various proposed mechanisms in the parametric study. A ramp heat input function was developed to gradually apply the heat flux with variable amplitude to the model. This model was used to avoid numerical convergence problems due to an instantaneous increase in temperature near the fusion zone. Additionally, it enables the model to include the effect of a moving arc in a two-dimensional plane. The ramp function takes into account the variation in the out of plane energy flow in a 2-D model as the arc approaches, travels across, and departs from each plane under investigation. A lumped pass model was developed to reduce the computation cost in the analysis of multipass welds. Several weld passes were assumed as one lumped pass in this model. Recommendations were provided about ramp lumping techniques and the optimum number of weld passes that can be combined into a single thermal input.

The purpose of this study is to develop a Half Nozzle Repair(HNR) process to prevent the leakage from welds on small bore piping in Reactor Coolant System. The Codes & Standards of tempered bead and design requirements of J-Groove welds are reviewed. Automatic machine GTAW welding and machining equipments are developed to perform HNR process. Single pass welding and overlay welding equipments are conducted in order to obtain the optimal temper bead welding process parameters with Alloy 52M filler wire. Coarse grain heat affected zone(CGHAZ) is formed by rapid cooling rate in heat affected zone after welding. Accordingly, a proper temper bead technique is required to reduce CGHAZ in 1-Layer of welds by 2- and 3-Layers. Mock-up tests show that the developed HNR process is possible to meet ASME Code & Standard requirements without any defect.
High Strength low alloy steels containing various levels of C, Nb and Mn were used and for each of which, a simulated double thermal cycle was applied with the same first peak temperature and different second peak temperatures to produce HAZ microstructure corresponding to multi-pass weld. Effect of double cycle second temperature on the microstructure was observed and compared with single cycle results obtained from previous works, it was found that the percentage of martensite austenite constituent (MA) increases by Nb addition for all steels with the same Mn content and the increase in Mn content at the same Nb content shows an increase in MA area fraction as well. MA area fraction obtained for the double cycle is larger than that obtained for the single cycle for all steels used which imply that MA will have great role in the brittle fracture initiation for double cycle and the inter-pass temperature should be controlled for medium and high-carbon Mn steel to avoid large area fraction of MA. The beneficial effects of Niobium obtained in single pass weld were not observed for the double cycle or multi pass welds.
In order to study the distribution of welding residual stress through the plate thickness. experiment and analysis of fillet welding details were carried out. Especially, a residual stress in the weld root part of T-joint fillet weld whose measurement was difficult up to now was measured. By using the heat input and the number of the weld layers as parameters, the distribution of the 3-dimensional residual stress was investigated. As a result, we can say that with increasing the heat input, the residual stress in the weld toe and weld root barely changes. But, the area of the tensile residual stress became wide. Then, comparing a single pass with multi-pass weld method, it was found that the residual stress decreased more in multi-pass than in single pass. Moreover, it was found the thing that the area of tensile residual stress by multi-pass is lower than that by single-pass in the near weld part.

The objective of this paper is to evaluate the fracture resistance characteristics of SA508 Cl.1a to SA508 Cl.3 welds manufactured for the reactor coolant loop piping system of nuclear power plants. The effect of the crack plane orientation to the welding process orientation and the preheat temperature on the fracture resistance characteristics were discussed. Results of the fracture resistance test showed that the effect of the crack plane orientation to the welding process orientation of the fracture toughness is significant, while that of preheat temperature on the fracture toughness is negligible. The micro Vickers hardness test, the metallographic observation and the fractography analysis were conducted to analyse the crack jump phenomenon on the L-R crack plane orientation in the multi-pass welding zone. As these results, it is shown that the crack jump phenomenon was produced because of the inhomogeneity between welding beads and the crack plane orientation must be considered for the safety of the welding zone in the piping system.

The present study is to investigate the effect of heat input on the microstructure, tensile properties and toughness of single-pass submerged arc bead-in-groove welds produced on SA508 class 3 steels. The heat input was varied in the range of 1.6, 3.2 and 5.0 kJ/mm. The toughness of weld metals was evaluated by using subsize Charpy V-notch specimens in the temperature range of -19$0^{\circ}C$ to 2$0^{\circ}C$. The weld microstructure and fractography were observed by optical and scanning electron microscopies, respectively. With increasing heat inputs, tensile strength and hardness of weld metals were decreased while elongation was increased. The poor notch toughness at 1.6 kJ/mm was attributed to the formation of ferrite with aligned second phase and banitic microstructure with high yield strength while that at 5.0 kJ/mm was due to the presence of grain boundary and polygonal ferrites. The microstructure of the intermediate energy input welds consisted of a high proportion of acicular ferrite with limited polygonal ferrites, which provide improved notch toughness.
