  • A comprehensive three-dimensional nano-particle tracking technique in micro- and nano-scale spatial resolution using the Total Internal Reflection Fluorescence Microscope (TIRFM) is discussed. Evanescent waves from the total internal reflection of a 488nm argon-ion laser are used to measure the hindered Brownian diffusion within few hundred nanometers of a glass-water interface. 200-nm fluorescence-coated polystyrene spheres are used as tracers to achieve three-dimensional tracking within the near-wall penetration depth. A novel ratiometric imaging technique coupled with a neural network model is used to tag and track the tracer particles. This technique allows for the determination of the relative depth wise locations of the particles. This analysis, to our knowledge is the first such three-dimensional ratiometric nano-particle tracking velocimetry technique to be applied for measuring Brownian diffusion close to the wall.

  • It is necessary to have a model that describes the feature of the knee Joint with a sufficient accuracy. Koreans, however, do not have their own knee joint model to be used in the total knee replacement arthroplasty. They have to use European or American models which do not match Koreans. Three-dimensional visualization techniques are found to be useful in a wide range of medical applications. Three-dimensional imaging studies such as CT(computed tomography) and MRI(magnetic resonance image) provide the primary source of patient-specific data. Three-dimensional knee joint models were constructed by image processing of the CT data of 10 subjects. Using the constructed model, the dimensions of Korean knee joint were measured. And this study proposed a three-dimensional model and data, which can be helpful to develop Korean knee implants and to analyze knee joint movements.

  • Objective: Biplanar imaging systems allow for simultaneous acquisition of lateral and frontal cephalograms. The purpose of this study was to compare measurements recorded on three-dimensional (3D) cephalograms constructed from two-dimensional conventional radiographs and biplanar radiographs generated using a new biplanar imaging system with those recorded on cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT)-generated cephalograms in order to evaluate the accuracy of the 3D cephalograms generated using the biplanar imaging system. Methods: Three sets of lateral and frontal radiographs of 15 human dry skulls with prominent facial asymmetry were obtained using conventional radiography, the biplanar imaging system, and CBCT. To minimize errors in the construction of 3D cephalograms, fiducial markers were attached to anatomical landmarks prior to the acquisition of radiographs. Using the 3D $Ceph^{TM}$ program, 3D cephalograms were constructed from the images obtained using the biplanar imaging system (3D $ceph_{biplanar}$), conventional radiography (3D $ceph_{conv}$), and CBCT (3D $ceph_{cbct}$). A total of 34 measurements were obtained compared among the three image sets using paired t-tests and Bland-Altman plotting. Results: There were no statistically significant differences between the 3D $ceph_{biplanar}$ and 3D $ceph_{cbct}$ measurements. In addition, with the exception of one measurement, there were no significant differences between the 3D $ceph_{cbct}$ and 3D $ceph_{conv}$ measurements. However, the values obtained from 3D $ceph_{conv}$ showed larger deviations than those obtained from 3D $ceph_{biplanar}$. Conclusions: The results of this study suggest that the new biplanar imaging system enables the construction of accurate 3D cephalograms and could be a useful alternative to conventional radiography.

  • The effect of channel cutback on three-dimensional flow fields and aerodynamic losses downstream of a cavity squealer tip has been investigated in a turbine rotor cascade for the squealer rim height-to-chord ratio and tip gap height-to-chord ratio of $h_{st}/c$ = 5.51% and h/c = 2.0% respectively. The cutback length-to-camber ratio is changed to be $CB/c_c$ = 0.0, 0.1, 0.2 and 0.3. The results show that longer cutback delivers not only stronger secondary flow but also higher aerodynamic loss in the tip leakage vortex region, meanwhile it leads to lower aerodynamic loss in the passage vortex region. The discharge of cavity fluid through the cutback opening provides a beneficial effect in the reduction of aerodynamic loss, whereas there also exists a side effect of aerodynamic loss increase due to local wider tip gap near the trailing edge. With increasing $CB/c_c$ from 0.0 to 0.3, the aerodynamic loss coefficient mass-averaged all over the measurement plane tends to increase slightly.

  • In the manufacturing process of the LQFP/TQFP (Low-profile Quad Flat Package/Thin Quad Flat Package), the requirement of a 3 dimensional inspection is increasing rapidly and a 3D inspection of the shape of a chip has become an important report of quality control. This study developed a 3 dimensional measurement system based on PMP (Phase Measuring Profilometry) for an inspection of the LQFP/TQFP chip and image processing algorithms. The defects of the LQFP/TQFP chip were classified according to the dimensions. The 2 dimensional optical system was designed by the dorm illumination to achieve constant light distribution, In the 3 dimensional optical system, PZT was used for moving 90 degree in phase. The problem of 2 ambiguity was solved from the measured moir? pattern using the ambiguity elimination algorithm that finds the point of ambiguity and refines the phase value. The proposed 3D measurement system was evaluated experimentally.

  • This study suggests the sensing method of the Three-dimensional respiration rate sensor based on surface area changes, and exploring the design direction of the three-dimensional breathing sensor and the design orientation of the garment. To achieve this, two types of three-dimensional respiration rate sensor were produced, and the study of the dummy and the subjects studied. The study I investigated the possibility of measurement of the three-dimensional respiration sensor by the study variables of the sensor type and speed of respiration. The study II proposes a suitable type of sensor for each of the three measuring positions in addition to the study variables in the study I. To evaluate accuracy, reproducibility, and reliability of the three-dimensional respiration rate sensor, the BIOPAC was used to measure the respiration rate simultaneously with the three-dimensional respiration rate sensor. Through all these results of the experiment, it explored the possibility of measurement of the three-dimensional respiration sensor for the dummy. It also proposed a suitable type of sensor by measuring the respiration rate for the human body.

  • High-resolution data are needed to understand water body mixing patterns at river junctions. In particular, in river analysis, hydrological and water quality characteristics are used as basic data for aquatic ecological health, so observation through continuous monitoring is necessary. In addition, since measurement is carried out through a one-dimensional and fixed measurement method in existing monitoring systems, a hydrological and water quality characteristics investigation of an entire river, except for in the immediate vicinity of the measurement point, is not undertaken. In order to obtain high-resolution measurement data, a measurer has to consider multiple factors, and the area or time that can be measured is limited. Although the resolution might be lowered, an appropriate interpolation method must be selected in order to acquire a wide range of data. Therefore, in this study, a high-elevation measurement method at a river junction was introduced, and the interpolation method according to the measurement results was compared. The overall hydraulic and water quality information of the river was indicated through the visualization of the prediction and interpolation method in the low-resolution measurement result. By comparing each interpolation method, Inverse Distance Weighting, Natural Neighbor, and Kriging techniques were applied in river mapping to improve the precision of river mapping through visualized data and quantitative evaluation. It is thought that this study will offer a new method for measuring rivers through spatial interpolation.

  • Three dimensional circular braided Glass/Aramid hybrid fabric/epoxy resin composite was fabricated. FBG sensor was embedded along the braid yam in order to monitor the internal dimensional changes of the 3-D braid composite. The amount of cure and thermal shrinkage of epoxy resin was also determined using FBG sensor system. FBG sensors with different grating length were embedded and their response were compared. The thermo-optic coefficient of FBG sensor was measured by several preliminary experiments. The internal strain that measured by FBG sensor and electric strain gauge was compared during compressive test. The released residual strain of the fabricated tubular composite was estimated using cutting method. The internal strain of the composite was estimated using FBG sensor system, and the result was compared with the value from electric strain gauge. It was found that FBG sensor system is a very useful technique to investigate inside region of complicated structure.

  • This study is performed to check the three dimensional characteristics of residual stress in the dissimilar metal weld. Although two dimensional analysis has been widely used for the assessment of weld residual stress, it has limitations to understand the stress distribution of the third direction. 3-D analysis was done to understand residual stress distribution of the welded plate. A simple butt-welded plate was considered to show the stress variation on all direction. A mock-up plate weldment was fabricated with SA-508 and F316L, which are widely used in nuclear power plants. The analysis results were validated with the measured values in the mock-up.
