Comparison of 2 root surface area measurement methods: 3-dimensional laser scanning and cone-beam computed tomography

  • Purpose: The aim of this study was to compare the use of 3-dimensional (3D) laser scanning and cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) as methods of root surface measurement. Materials and Methods: Thirty teeth (15 maxillary first premolars and 15 mandibular first premolars) from 8 patients who required extractions for orthodontic treatment were selected. Before extraction, pre-treatment CBCT images of all the patients were recorded. First, a CBCT image was imported into simulation software (Mimics version 15.01; Materialise, Leuven, Belgium) and the root surface area of each tooth was calculated using 3-Matic (version 7.01, Materialise, Leuven, Belgium). After extraction, all the teeth were scanned and the root surface area of each extracted tooth was calculated. The root surface areas calculated using these 2 measurement methods were analyzed using the paired t-test (P<.05). Correlations between the 2 methods were determined by calculating the Pearson correlation coefficient. The intraclass correlation coefficient(ICC) was used to assess intraobserver reliability. Results: The root surface area measurements ($230.11{\pm}41.97mm^2$) obtained using CBCT were slightly greater than those ($229.31{\pm}42.46mm^2$) obtained using 3D laser scanning, but not significantly (P=.425). A high Pearson correlation coefficient was found between the CBCT and the 3D laser scanner measurements. The intraobserver ICC was 1.000 for 3D laser scanning and 0.990 for CBCT. Conclusion: This study presents a novel CBCT approach for measuring the root surface area; this technique can be used for estimating the root surface area of non-extracted teeth.

  • We used a three-dimensional motion capture method to measure the grasping reach of Korean. This method was applied well to the grasping reach measurement with low measurement error and high efficiency. We measured the grasping reach of 29 males and 21 females at the different height from seat reference level; -10, 0, 30, 60, and 90cm. The grasping reach data were summarized at each 15 .deg. in polar corrdinates to compare with the former researches. If the number of subjects increases in the supplement research, the grasping reach data will be used in the ergonomic design of the driver's cabin or workstations in industry.

  • The shadow moire is one of the optical techniques which is able to give contour lines of an object with respect to a master grating plane. The moire patterns are issued from the superposition of a master grating and its shadow projected on the surface of an object. In case of the classical shadow moire method, the sensitivity was a few tenths millimeters. generally, it is difficult to use a phase shift method in shadow moire because it is impossible to obtain uniform phase shifts on the whole field. But in this study we use the fact that if the depth of object is much less than the distance between the observer and the master grating, and the object is displaced perpendicularly to the grating plane, phase shifts are almost uniform. Finally we obtained a better resolution by using a phase shift procedure and applied the phase shifting shadow moire to three dimensional shape measurement.

  • Urban quality of life(QOL) is recently considered as the important determinant of inter-urban migration and industrial location chice. However, there is little concensus in the method of measurement of QOL. This study provides an theoretical framework of the measurement of QOL. This study provides an theoretical framework of the measurement of QOL, and developes a new method, a multi-year$\cdot$mulit-dimensional distance index model. Based on the theoretical framework and the method, the QOLs of 74 urban areas in Korea are measured, and the determinants of the QOL and the changes of the QOL between two years of 1993 and 1995 are analyzed. The results of the analysis are as follows: 1) The interurban differences of the QOL tens to be interban differences of the QOL tend to be intensified over time. 2) The OQLs of the cities in the Capital Region are relatively deteriorated. 3) The conditions of education$\cdot$Culture$\cdot$leisure life determiner over 65% of the QOL of the Korean cities.

  • Flow rate measurement is one of the difficult problems in the industrial applications. Especially, flow rate in a partially filled pipeline is affected by many parameters such as water level, channel slop, etc. In the present study, prior to the development of a flowmeter, the flow characteristics has been investigated by particle image velocimetry (PIV) measurements. Three-dimensional velocity distributions were obtained from sectional measurements of velocity profiles according to the water level. As a result, it is found that there is no similarity in the velocity profile when the lateral position is changed. In addition, the maximum velocity does not always occur on the free surface. It depends on the water level. In the aspect of flow rate measurement, the previous calculus based upon point measurement techniques is proved to be inaccurate because of the lack of whole flow information.

  • In this paper, we designed a line CCD camera for a flying image, which is composed of a line CCD sensor(2048 cells) and a rotating mirror, and investigated its optical properties. We also made the 3-D image from the flying image which is made of 2-D image being juxtaposed to 1-D images obtained by the camera, and performed the calibration to acquire high precision 3-D data. As a result, we obtained the 3-D measurement system using the slit type of laser projector is available to measure the high precision shape of objects.

  • An attitude GPS receiver with 3 antennas obtains 3-dimensional attitude using GPS carrier phase measurement INS obtains the 3 dimensional navigation solution for IMU consisting of accelerometers and gyro. Ground-alignment process for the low -cost INS cannot be performed well due to the large sensor noise. Using the standard GPS receiver, however, continuous in-flight alignment for the INS becomes possible, and consequently, the errors in IMU sensors and navigation solution can be compensated. Especially with attitude measurement from the attitude GPS receiver, the compensation of errors in gyroscope and attitude would be done respite of the vehicle´s dynamics and their error covariance would be reduced.   • This paper presents the development of video-based 3-dimensional tracking system. Measurement of human motion is important in the application of ergonomics. The system uses advanced direct video measurement technology. Passive retro-reflecting markers are attached to a subject and movements of markers are observed by two CCD cameras. Infrared light emitted near the CCD cameras is reflected by the markers and is detected by the cameras. The image ae captured by Samsung MVBO2 board and the center of markers is calculated by DSP program. The position of markers are transferred from MVB02 board to the computer through AT bus. The computer then tracks the position of each marker and saves the data. This system has dynamic accuracy with 1% error and the sampling rate to 6-10 Hz, and can analyse the trajectory and speed of the marker. The results of this study can be used for operators motion analysis, task analysis, and hand movement characteristic analysis.

  • This paper presents a camera calibration method using several images for three dimensional measurement applications such as stereo systems, mobile robots, and visual inspection systems in factories. Conventional calibration methods that use single image suffer from errors related to reference point extraction in image, lens distortion, and numerical analysis of nonlinear optimization. The camera parameter values obtained from images of same camera is not same even though we use same calibration method. The camera parameters that are obtained from several images of different view for a calibration target is usaully not same with large error values and we can not assume a special probabilistic distribution when we estimate the parameter values. In this paper, the median value of camera parameters from several images is used to improve estimation of the camera values in an iterative step with nonlinear optimization. The proposed method is proved by experiments using real images.

  • GPS carrier phase is supposed to provide the tool for the most precise 3 dimensional positioning information. The FAST, an OTF technique, has been developed by the GPS System Laboratory of Konkuk University, and has been shown several millimeter level accuracy in root-mean-square sense. This OTF's high precision positioning capability provides an adequate tool of low frequency vibration monitoring of large structures. In this paper, the possibility of vibration measurement of a cantilever beam using FAST has been tested, which is supposed to be extended to more practical applications. The results of the experiment have been compared with those by a strain gage and laser sensor.
