Due to the difficulty raised from the coupling of cavitation modeling with turbulent flow, numerical simulation for two phase flow remains one of the challenging issues in the society. This research focuses on the development of numerical code to deal with incompressible two phase flow around 2D hydrofoil by combing the cavitation model suggested by Kunz et al. with $k-{\varepsilon}$ turbulent model. The simulation results are compared to experimental data to verify the validity of the developed code. Also, the comparison of the calculation results is made with LES results to evaluate the capability of $k-{\varepsilon}$ turbulence model. The calculation results show very good agreement with experimental observations even though this code can not grasp the small scaled bubbles in the calculation wheres LES can hold the real physics. This code will be extended to 3D compressible two phase flow for the study on the fluid dynamics in the inducers and impellers.
This paper describes analysis of complex flow around Car-like body using Chimera grid technique. As a computational algorithm, Pullboat and Chaussee's Diagonal algorithm is selected to reduce computational time. Introducing hole points flag to this Diagonal algorithm, an algorithm for Chimera grid is generated easily. This study solves 3-D unsteady incompressible Navier-Stokes equations on a non-orthogonal curvilinear coordinate system using second-order accurate schemes for the time derivatives, and third/second-order scheme for the spatial derivatives. The Marker-and-Cell concept is applied to efficiently solve continuity equation. The fourth-order artificial damping is added to the continuity equation for numerical stability, It has concluded that the results of present study properly agree with physical flow phenomena.

Aerodynamic characteristics over Micro Aerial Vehicle(MAV) in low Reynolds number regime are numerically studied using 3-D unsteady, incompressible Navier-Stokes flow solver with single partitioning method for multi-block grid. For more efficient computation of unsteady flows, this flow solver is parallel-implemented with MPl(Message Passing Interface) programming method. Firstly, MAV wing with not complex geometry is considered and then, we analyze aerodynamic characteristics over full MAV configuration varying the angle of attack. Present computational results show a better agreement with the experimental data by MACDL(Micro Aerodynamic Control and Design Lab.), Seoul National University. We can also find the conceptually designed MAV by MACDL has the static stability.
This paper handled an investigation on the turbulent flow characteristics of three-dimensional small-size axial fan(SSAF) according to operating loads. Also, it was carried out by unsteady-state, incompressible and three-dimensional large eddy simulation(LES). The downstream flow type of SSAF is changed from axial flow to radial flow around the beginning of stall region at the aerodynamic performance curve. Axial mean velocity component largely grows around blade tip at the operating point of A to D, but transverse and vertical mean velocity components as well as Reynolds shear stresses highly develop around blade tip at the operating point of E to H. On the other hand, the peak value of turbulent kinetic energy developed around blade tip shows the highest at the operating point of E.
This work was devoted to compare two different cavitation models to study the dependency of model constants. The cavitation model of Merkle et al.(2006) and Kunz et al.(2000) were used for the present computational study. The cavitation models were coupled with the incompressible unsteady Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes solver to indicate the vaporization and condensation processes. For this purpose, a preconditioning method was added as the pseudo-time term to solve the unsteady stiffness problems. For the validation of the numerical simulation, the computation was performed for the cavitating flow in a converging-diverging channel. The present results show that Merkle's cavitation model is independent to the model constants, and the higher numerical accuracy over Kunz's cavitation model.

A CFD simulation technique has been developed to handle the unsteady body motion with large amplitude by use of overlapping multi-block grid system. The three-dimensional, viscous and incompressible flow around body is investigated by solving the Navier-Stokes equations, and the motion of body is represented by moving effect of the grid system. Composite grid system is employed in order to deal with both the body motion with large amplitude and the condition of numerical wave maker in convenience at the same time. The governing equations, Navier-Stokes (N-S) and continuity equations, are discretized by a finite volume method, in the framework of an O-H type boundary-fitted grid system (inner grid system including test model) and a rectangular grid system (outer grid system including simulation equipments for generation of wave environments). If this study, several flow configurations, such as an oscillating cylinder with large KC number, are studied in order to predict and evaluate the hydrodynamic forces. Furthermore, the motion simulation of a Series 60 model advancing in a uniform flow under the condition of enforced roll motion of angle 20$^{\circ}$ is performed in the developed numerical wave tank.

The aim of this paper is to numerically explore the feasibility of designing a Mini-Hydro turbine. The interest for this kind of horizontal axis turbine relies on its versatility. For instance, in the field of renewable energy, this kind of turbine may be considered for different applications, such as: tidal power, run-of-the-river hydroelectricity, wave energy conversion. It is fundamental to improve the turbine performance and to decrease the equipment costs for achievement of "environmental friendly" solutions and maximization of the "cost-advantage". In the present work, the commercial CFD code ANSYS is used to perform 3D simulations, solving the incompressible Unsteady Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes (U-RANS) equations discretized by means of a finite volume approach. The implicit segregated version of the solver is employed. The pressure-velocity coupling is achieved by means of the SIMPLE algorithm. The convective terms are discretized using a second order accurate upwind scheme, and pressure and viscous terms are discretized by a second-order-accurate centered scheme. A second order implicit time formulation is also used. Turbulence closure is provided by the realizable k - turbulence model. In this study, a mini hydro turbine (3kW) has been considered for utilization of horizontal axis impeller. The turbine performance and flow behavior have been evaluated by means of numerical simulations. Moreover, the performance of the impeller varied in the pressure distribution, torque, rotational speed and power generated by the different number of blades and angles. The model has been validated, comparing numerical results with available experimental data.

Numerical simulation of fluid flow with moving free surface has been carried out. For the free surface flow, a VOF(Volume of Fluid)-based algorithm utilizing a fixed grid system has been investigated. In order to reduce numerical smearing at the free surface represented on a fixed grid system, a new free surface tracking algorithm based on the donor-acceptor scheme has been presented. Novel features of the proposed algorithm are characterized as two numerical tools; the orientation vector to represent the free surface orientation in each cell and the baby-cell to determine the fluid volume flux at each cell boundary. The proposed algorithm can be easily implemented in any irregular non-uniform grid systems that are usual in finite element method (FEM). Moreover, the proposed algorithm can be extended and applied to the 3-D free surface flow problem without additional efforts. For computation of unsteady incompressible flow, a finite element approximation based on the explicit fractional step method has been adopted. In addition, the SUPG(streamline upwind/Petrov-Galerkin) method has been implemented to deal with convection dominated flows. Combination of the proposed free surface tracking scheme and explicit fractional step formulation resulted in an efficient solution algorithm. Validity of the present solution algorithm was demonstrated from its application to the broken dam and the solitary wave propagation problems.
The main objective of this study is to investigate the turning and zig-zag maneuvering performance of the well-known naval surface combatant DTMB (David Taylor Model Basin) 5415 hull with URANS (Unsteady Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes) method. Numerical simulations of static drift tests have been performed by a commercial RANS solver based on a finite volume method (FVM) in an unsteady manner. The fluid flow is considered as 3-D, incompressible and fully turbulent. Hydrodynamic analyses have been carried out for a fixed Froude number 0.28. During the analyses, the free surface effects have been taken into account using VOF (Volume of Fluid) method and the hull is considered as fixed. First, the code has been validated with the available experimental data in literature. After validation, static drift, static rudder and drift and rudder tests have been simulated. The forces and moments acting on the hull have been computed with URANS approach. Numerical results have been applied to determine the hydrodynamic maneuvering coefficients, such as, velocity terms and rudder terms. The acceleration, angular velocity and cross-coupled terms have been taken from the available experimental data. A computer program has been developed to apply a fast maneuvering simulation technique. Abkowitz's non-linear mathematical model has been used to calculate the forces and moment acting on the hull during the maneuvering motion. Euler method on the other hand has been applied to solve the simultaneous differential equations. Turning and zig-zag maneuvering simulations have been carried out and the maneuvering characteristics have been determined and the numerical simulation results have been compared with the available data in literature. In addition, viscous effects have been investigated using Eulerian approach for several static drift cases.
Water is removed from crude oil containing water by using oil separator. This study aims to develop a three-dimensional (3D) Eulerian computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model to predict the separation efficiency of air-water-oil separator. In the incompressible, isothermal and unsteady-state CFD model, air is defined as continuous phase, and water and oil are given as dispersed phase. The momentum equation includes the drag force, lift force and resistance force of porous media. The standard k-${\varepsilon}$ model is used for turbulence flow. The exit pressures of water and oil play an important role in determining the liquid level of the oil separator. The exit pressures were identified to be 6.3 kPa and 5.1 kPa for water and oil, respectively, to keep a liquid level of 25 cm at a normal operating condition. The time evolution of volume fractions of air, water and oil was investigated. The settling velocities of water and oil along the longitudinal separator distance were analyzed, when the oil separator reached a steady-state. The oil separation efficiency obtained from the CFD model was 99.85%, which agreed well with experimental data. The relatively simple CFD model can be used for the modification of oil separator structure and finding optimal operating conditions.
