Survey on 3D Surface Reconstruction

  • The recent advent of increasingly affordable and powerful 3D scanning devices capable of capturing high resolution range data about real-world objects and environments has fueled research into effective 3D surface reconstruction techniques for rendering the raw point cloud data produced by many of these devices into a form that would make it usable in a variety of application domains. This paper, therefore, provides an overview of the existing literature on surface reconstruction from 3D point clouds. It explains some of the basic surface reconstruction concepts, describes the various factors used to evaluate surface reconstruction methods, highlights some commonly encountered issues in dealing with the raw 3D point cloud data and delineates the tradeoffs between data resolution/accuracy and processing speed. It also categorizes the various techniques for this task and briefly analyzes their empirical evaluation results demarcating their advantages and disadvantages. The paper concludes with a cross-comparison of methods which have been evaluated on the same benchmark data sets along with a discussion of the overall trends reported in the literature. The objective is to provide an overview of the state of the art on surface reconstruction from point cloud data in order to facilitate and inspire further research in this area.

  • An automatic mesh generation system with unstructured quadrilateral elements on trimmed NURBS surfaces has been developed.. In this paper, NURBS surface geometries in the IGES format have been used to represent model shape. NURBS surface is represented as parametric surface. So each surface could be mapped to a 2D parametric plane through the parametric domain. And then meshes with quadrilateral elements are constructed in this plane. Finally, the constructed meshes are mapped back to the original 3D surface through the parametric domain. In this paper, projection plane, quasi-expanded plane and parametric Plane are used as 2D mesh generation plane. For mapping 3D surface to parametric domain, Newton-Rhapson Method is employed. For unstructured mesh generation with quadrilateral elements on 2D plane, a domain decomposition algorithm using loop operators has been employed. Sample meshes are represented to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm.

  • Recently, digital image is increasing greatly practical use degree in several industry fields including construction. And interest about 3D digital image that can express practical object realistically is augmented greatly. In this study, developed 3D digital image generation system based on digital photogrammetry and created 3D digital image for object. And, wished to verify of 3D digital image through comparative analysis with processing result by digital photogrammetry system been using much the latest for acquisition of 3D information. Also, wished to apply to surface information acquisition about rock slope and execute investigation about discontinuity of joint etc. As the result, could created 3D digital image for object using the 3D digital image generation system developing in this study, and acquire surface information about rock slope efficiently.

  • A rapid Prototyping system that laser-cuts and laminates thick layers can fabricate 3D objects promptly with a variety of materials. Building such a system must consider the surface distortions due to both vertical-cut layers and triangular surfaces. We developed a tangential layer-cutting algorithm by rearranging tangential lines such that they reconstruct 3D surfaces more closely and also constitute smoother laser trajectories. An energy function that reflects the surface-closeness with the tangential lines was formulated and then the energy was minimized by a gradient descent method. Since this simple method tends to cause many local minima for complex 3D objects, we tried to solve this problem by adding a simulated annealing process to the proposed method. To view and manipulate 3D objects, we also implemented a 3D visual environment. Under this environment, experiments on various 3D objects showed that our algorithm effectively approximates 3D surfaces and makes laser-trajectory feasibly smooth.

다양한 위상 형상에 따른 3D 프린트 복합재료 조종면의 구조 최적화 (Structural Optimization of 3D Printed Composite Flight Control Surface according to Diverse Topology Shapes)

  • 선박, 항공기 구조물을 설계할 때 경량화 및 강도를 만족할 수 있도록 설계하는 것은 중요하다. 현재, 경량화와 구조물의 강도를 만족시키기 위한 방법으로 3D 프린트 복합재료를 이용한 위상 최적화에 관련된 연구가 활발히 이루어지고 있다. 본 연구에서는 항공기 또는 무인기의 부품 중 하나인 조종면에 대한 3D 프린트 복합재료의 적용 가능성을 분석하기 위해 구조해석을 수행했다. 조종면의 내부 위상 형상에 대해 3가지(육각형, 사각형, 삼각형) 형상을 고려하여 굽힘 하중에 대한 조종면의 최적의 위상 형상을 분석하였다. 또한 3D 프린트 복합재료의 4가지 강화재(탄소섬유, 유리섬유, 고강내열유리섬유, 케블라)를 적용했을 때의 조종면의 굽힘 강도를 분석하였다. 3점 굽힘 실험결과와 구조해석 결과를 비교한 결과, 탄소섬유와 케블라로 제작된 육각형의 위상 형상을 갖는 조종면이 우수한 성능을 갖는 것을 확인하였다. 이를 통해 조종면에 대해 3D 프린트 복합재를 충분히 적용 가능할 것으로 판단된다.

3D 프린터로 출력된 치과용 레진의 자동바렐연마공정에 따른 표면 거칠기 및 연마도 관찰 (Observation of surface roughness and grinding angle by automatic barrel finishing process of dental 3D printed resin)

  • Purpose: This study aimed to confirm the applicability of gloss polishing using automatic barrel finishing with respect to three-dimensional (3D)-printed resin specimens. The surface roughness and grinding angle of the 3D-printed resin specimens were observed with respect to gloss polishing time using automatic dental barrel finishing. Methods: Herein, experiments were conducted on four types of 3D-printed resin specimens. The specimens, with a thickness of 100 ㎛ each, were printed using a 3D printer. Subsequently, light polymerization was performed on these specimens for 15 min. Post this surface treatment, the specimens underwent grinding for 25 min. This process was followed by gloss polishing at 5-min intervals for up to 25 min using automatic dental barrel finishing. The specimens were photographed using a 3D optical microscope, and their surface roughness and grinding angle were measured. Results: The Ra (centerline average roughness) values of all the specimens, except for crown & bridge 10 group and those in the control group that were not polished using automatic barrel finishing, were <0.2 ㎛. However, polishing time needs to be controlled to realize the desired surface roughness and grinding amount considering the hardness of the resin used. Conclusion: Gloss polishing of 3D-printed resin can be realized using automatic dental barrel finishing. Numerical Simulation of Tribological Phenomena Using Stochastic Models

  • Tribological phenomena such as wear or transfer are influenced by various factors and have complicated behavior. Therefore, it is difficult to predict the behavior of the gribological phenomena because of their complexity. But, those tribological phenomena can be considered simply as to transfer micro material particles from the sliding interface. Then, we proposed the numerical simulation method for tribological phenomena such as wear of transfer using stochastic process models. This numerical simulation shows the change of the 3-D surface topography. In this numerical simulation, initial 3-D surface toughness data are generated by the method of non-causal 2-D AR (autoregressive) model. Processes of wear and transfer for some generated initial 3-D surface data are simulated. Simulation results show successfully the change of the 3-D surface topography.

  • 개발한 3 D 대기압 플라즈마 헤드와 그 특성 및 장단점 및 그에 의한 표면 개질 특성을 나타낸다. 플라즈마 처리 높이가 75 mm 이상의 시편도 처리할 수 있는 3 D 대기압 플라즈마 헤드를 개발하였으며, 그에 의한 신발 재료 EVA, PU, Rubber의 표면 개질 특성을 평가하였다. 또한 반도체 및 FPD 처리용 대기압 플라즈마도 개발하였다.

Virtual Models for 3D Printing

  • surface texture denotes set of tiny repetitive geometric features on an object surface. 3D Printing can readily create a surface of controlled macro-textures of high geometric complexity. Designing surface textures for 3D Printing, however, is difficult due to complex macro-structure of the tiny texture geometry since it needs to be compatible with the non-traditioal manufacturing method. In this paper we propose a visual simulation technique involving development of a virtual model-an intermediate geometric model-of the surface texture design prior to fabricating the physical model. Careful examination of the virtual model before the actual fabrication can help minimize unwanted design iterations. The proposed technique demonstrated visualization capability by comparing the virtual model with the physical model for several test cases.

  • In the field of computer vision and robotics, bin picking is an important application area in which object pose estimation is necessary. Different approaches, such as 2D feature tracking and 3D surface reconstruction, have been introduced to estimate the object pose accurately. We propose a new approach where we can use both 2D image features and 3D surface information to identify the target object and estimate its pose accurately. First, we introduce a label detection technique using Maximally Stable Extremal Regions (MSERs) where the label detection results are used to identify the target objects separately. Then, the 2D image features on the detected label areas are utilized to generate 3D surface information. Finally, we calculate the 3D position and the orientation of the target objects using the information of the 3D surface.
