As virtual reality technologies are advanced rapidly, how to render 3D objects across modalities is becoming an important issue. This study is therefore aimed to investigate human discriminability on the curvature of 3D polygonal surfaces with focusing on the vision and touch senses because they are most dominant when explore 3D shapes. For the study, we designed a psychophysical experiment using signal detection theory to determine curvature discrimination for three conditions: haptic only, visual only, and both haptic and visual. The results show that there is no statistically significant difference among the conditions although the threshold in the haptic condition is the lowest. The results also indicate that rendering using both visual and haptic channels could degrade the performance of discrimination on a 3D global shape. These results must be considered when a multimodal rendering system is designed in near future.

Background: Local anesthetic injections may induce pain in children, leading to fear and anxiety during subsequent visits. Among the various approaches recommended to reduce pain, one is the use of a Buzzy BeeTM device that operates on the concept of gate control theory and distraction. The literature regarding its effectiveness during the deposition of local anesthesia remains limited; hence, the aim of the present study was to determine the efficacy of extraoral cold and vibrating devices in reducing pain perception during the deposition of local anesthesia. Methods: A split-mouth crossover study in which 40 children aged 3-12 years requiring maxillary infiltration or inferior alveolar nerve block for extractions or pulp therapy in the maxillary or mandibular posterior teeth were included. The control intervention involved the application of topical anesthetic gel for one minute (5% lignocaine gel), followed by the administration of local anesthetic (2% lignocaine with 1:80,000 adrenaline) at a rate of 1 ml/ minute. Along with the control protocol, the test intervention involved using the Buzzy BeeTM device for 2 minutes before and during the deposition of the local anesthetic injection. The heart rate and face, legs, arms, cry, and consolability revised (FLACC-R) scale scores were recorded by the dentist to assess the child's pain perception. Results: The mean age of the participants in Group A and Group B was 7.050 ± 3.12 years and 7.9 ± 2.65 years respectively. A reduction in the mean heart rate and FLACC-R score was observed during the deposition of local anesthetic solution in the tissues when the Buzzy BeeTM was used in both groups at different visits in the same subjects (P < 0.05) The Buzzy BeeTM device was effective in reducing the heart rate and FLACC-R scores when used during maxillary infiltration and inferior alveolar nerve block local anesthesia techniques (P < 0.05). Conclusion: The use of extraoral cold and vibrating devices significantly reduces pain perception during local anesthetic deposition in pediatric patients. Considering the results of this study, the device may be incorporated as an adjunct in routine dental practice while administering local anesthesia in children.
Various perceptual distortions in spatial vision occur during eye movements. Most of the studies on perceptual distortion have focused on the conjunctive eye movements. Recently, Li, Kham, Kim & Yoon (2002) reported that subjects experienced perceptual distortion of 3D slant of an object defined by the spatiotemproal pattern of occlusion. The present research examined whether the subjects experienced the same perceptual distortion in the target object whose luminance is different from that of background. It also examined the effect of the reference on the perceptual distortion of 3D slant of an object.
The purpose of this study was to identify the mediating effect of self-efficiency on the relationship between grit, health perception and health promotion behaviors of nurses and to provide baseline data to improve health promotion. A structured questionnaire survey was carried on 242 nurses at an university hospital in D-city. The strong and positive effects of grit, self-efficiency and health perception on health promotion behaviors were found. Self-effica -cy had a perfect mediating effection the effects of grit on health promotion behavior and a partial mediating effect on the effects of health perception on health promotion behavior. The study results suggest the need for various intervention programs based on multiple factors associated with grit, health perception and self-efficiency in order to enhance health promotion behaviors of nurses.
The purpose of this study was to investigate levels of perception of good death and hospice, and attitude of dying care, to examine relationships among them, and then to investigate predictors affecting of attitude of dying care in nursing students. The participants were 229 nursing students in D city who were surveyed in May to June 2019 using self-report questionnaires. Perception of good death and hospice, and attitude of dying care were related positively among variables. In the multiple regression analysis, perception of good death, and perception of hospice were influential factors significantly associated with the attitude of dying care. Those factors explained 39.3% of the attitude of dying care in nursing students. The most important factor was perception of hospice. In order to encourage and improve positive perception of death and attitude of dying care in nursing students, nursing educators should consider building up and reinforcing the curriculum of nursing college.
The experimental side of earth science contains a lot of variables that cannot be controlled in the classroom or in the laboratory. Therefore, as one method to overcome these difficulties, a learning program using 3D Virtual Reality technique has been developed. The program was used with 701 middle school students. The result showed that the program had a very positive effect on inducing interest and motivation through a sense of immersion, and it also showed to be a big help in the improvement of space perception ability.

The objective of this study was to investigate the physicochemical properties of domestic strong wheat flour (DSWF). Three commercial DSWFs (D1, D2, and D3) were compared with imported strong wheat flour (ISWF). DSWFs had higher moisture content, crude protein content, lightness, and whiteness than ISWF. DSWFs showed lower solvent retention capacity and water absorption index than ISWF. DSWFs also showed significantly higher water solubility index than ISWF (P<0.05). Setback values by rapid visco analysis were significantly higher in D1 and D2 than in ISWF and D3, which means ISWF and D3 were better in retarding retrogradation. Differential scanning calorimetry results showed that ISWF required 6.2 J/g of energy for phase transition, whereas DSWFs needed 6.67~7.13 J/g. The farinograph results showed that ISWF had higher water absorption, longer dough stability time, and significantly higher softening of dough at 20 min than DSWF (P<0.05). Dough resistance and extensibility were higher in ISWF than in DSWFs.

In this paper, firstly, we propose a generating method of the 3-D obstacle map using ultrasonic sensors. Secondly, we try to find the necessary stimulation conditions of compact tactile display device for effective transfer of obstacle information. The final goal of this research is the development of a walking guide system for the blind to walk safely. The walking guide system consists of a guide vehicle for the obstacle detection and a tactile display device for the transfer of the obstacle information. The guide vehicle, located in front of the walking blind, detects the obstacle using ultrasonic sensors. The processed information makes an obstacle map and transmits safe path and emergency situation to the blind by the tactile display. The tactile display device, located in the handle which is connected with the guide vehicle by cane, offers the processed obstacle information such as position, size, moving, shape of obstacle and safe path, etc. The concept of a walking guide system with tactile display is introduced, and experiments of 3-D obstacle detection and tactile perception are carried out and analyzed.

This paper concerns 3-D graphical modeling and simulation techniques for design and control of automated equipment for construction and facility maintenance. A case study on the use of 3-D graphics techniques for developing a power plant maintenance robot is presented. By simulating equipment operation within the 3-D geometry models of the work environment the environment design was improved. The 3-D graphical models of the equipment and the work environment were further utilized for the control of the robot from a remote distance. By presenting the real-time updated equipment configuration and the work environment to the operator, the graphical model-based equipment control system helped the operator overcome the problems associated with spatial perception. The collision between the robot and the plant structures was also avoided based the real-time analysis of the dynamically updated graphical models.
