In this study the investigation of large deflections subject in compliant mechanisms is presented using homotopy perturbation method (HPM). The main purpose is to propose a convenient method of solution for the large deflection problem in compliant mechanisms in order to overcome the difficulty and complexity of conventional methods, as well as for the purpose of mathematical modeling and optimization. For simplicity, a cantilever beam of linear elastic material under horizontal, vertical and bending moment end point load is considered. The results show that the applied method is very accurate and capable for cantilever beams and can be used for a large category of practical problems for the aim of optimization. Also the consequence of effective parameters on the large deflection is analyzed and presented.
The present study investigates the non-linear soil-pile interaction using three-dimensional (3D) non-linear finite element models. The numerical models were validated by using the results of extensive pile load and shaking table tests. The pile performance in liquefiable and non-liquefiable soil has been studied by analyzing the liquefaction ratio, pile lateral displacement (LD), pile bending moment (BM), and frictional resistance (FR) results. The pile models have been developed for the different ground conditions. The study reveals that the results obtained during the pile load test and shaking cycles have good agreement with the predicted pile and soil response. The soil density, peak ground acceleration (PGA), slenderness ratio (L/D), and soil condition (i.e., dry and saturated) are considered during modeling. Four ground motions are used for the non-linear time history analyses. Consequently, design charts are proposed depended on the analysis results to be used for design practice. Eleven models have been used to validate the capability of these charts to capture the soil-pile response under different seismic intensities. The results of the present study demonstrate that L/D ratio slightly affects the lateral displacement when compared with other parameters. Also, it has been observed that the increasing in PGA and decreasing L/D decreases the excess pore water pressure ratio; i.e., increasing PGA from 0.1 g to 0.82 g of loose sand model, decrease the liquefaction ratio by about 50%, and increasing L/D from 15 to 75 of the similar models (under Kobe earthquake), increase this ratio by about 30%. This study reveals that the lateral displacement increases nonlinearly under both dry and saturated conditions as the PGA increases. Similarly, it is observed that the BM increases under both dry and saturated states as the L/D ratio increases. Regarding the acceleration histories, the pile BM was reduced by reducing the acceleration intensity. Hence, the pile BM decreased to about 31% when the applied ground motion switched from Kobe (PGA=0.82 g) to Ali Algharbi (PGA=0.10 g). This study reveals that the soil conditions affect the relationship pattern between the FR and the PGA. Also, this research could be helpful in understanding the threat of earthquakes in different ground characteristics.
This study simulates the flexural behavior of ultra-high-performance fiber-reinforced concrete (UHPFRC) beams reinforced with steel and glass fiber-reinforced polymer (GFRP) rebars. For this, micromechanics-based modeling was first carried out on the basis of single fiber pullout models considering inclination angle. Two different tension-softening curves (TSCs) with the assumptions of 2-dimensional (2-D) and 3-dimensional (3-D) random fiber orientations were obtained from the micromechanics-based modeling, and linear elastic compressive and tensile models before the occurrence of cracks were obtained from the mechanical tests and rule of mixture. Finite element analysis incorporating smeared crack model was used due to the multiple cracking behaviors of structural UHPFRC beams, and the characteristic length of two times the element width (or two times the average crack spacing at the peak load) was suggested as a result of parametric study. Analytical results showed that the assumption of 2-D random fiber orientation is appropriate to a non-reinforced UHPFRC beam, whereas the assumption of 3-D random fiber orientation is suitable for UHPFRC beams reinforced with steel and GFRP rebars due to disorder of fiber alignment from the internal reinforcements. The micromechanics-based finite element analysis also well predicted the serviceability deflections of UHPFRC beams with GFRP rebars and hybrid reinforcements.

This paper presents a new method for the attitude control of planar space robots. In order to control highly constrained non-linear system such as a 3D space robot, the analytical formulation for the system with complex dynamics and effective control methodology based on the formulation, are not always obtainable. In the proposed method, correspondingly, a non-analytical but effective self-organizing modeling method for controlling a highly constrained system is proposed based on a polynomial data mining algorithm. In order to control the attitude of a planar space robot, it is well known to require inputs characterized by a special pattern in time series with a non-deterministic length. In order to correspond to this type of control paradigm, we adopt the Model Predictive Control (MPC) scheme where the length of the non-deterministic horizon is determined based on implementation cost and control performance. The optimal solution to finding the size of the input pattern is found by a solving two-stage programming problem.
In order to investigate the seismic behavior of highway bridges under near-fault earthquakes, a parametric study was conducted for different regular and irregular bridges. To this end, an existing regular viaduct Highway Bridge was used as a reference model and five irregular samples were generated by varying span length and pier height. The seismic response of the six highway bridges was evaluated by three dimensional non-linear response history analysis using an ensemble of far-fault and scenario-based near-fault records. In this regard, drift ratio, input and dissipated energy as well as damage index of bridges were compared under far- and near-fault motions. The results indicate that the drift ratio under near-fault motions, on the average, is 100% and 30% more than far-fault motions at DBE and MCE levels, respectively. The energy and damage index results demonstrate a dissipation of lower energy in piers and a significant increase of collapse risk, especially for irregular highway bridges, under near-fault ground motions.
Paneling building facades is one of the essential procedures in building construction. Traditionally, it has been an easy task of simply projecting paneling patterns drawn in drawing boards onto 3d building facades. However, as many organic or curved building shapes are designed and constructed in modern architectural practices, the traditional one-to-one projection is becoming obsolete for the building types of the kind. That is primarily because of the geometrical discrepancies between 2d drawing boards and 3d curved building surfaces. In addition, curved compound surfaces are often utilized to accommodate the complicated spatial programs, building codes, and zoning regulations or to achieve harmonious geometrical relationships with neighboring buildings in highly developed urban contexts. The use of the compound surface apparently makes the traditional paneling pattern projection more challenging. Various mapping technics have been introduced to deal with the inabilities of the projection methods for curved facades. The mapping methods translate geometries on a 2d surface into a 3d building façade at the same topological locations rather than relying on Euclidean or Affine projection. However, due to the intrinsic differences of the planar 2d and curved 3d surfaces, the mapping often comes with noticeable distortions of the paneling patterns. Thus, this paper proposes a practical method of drawing paneling patterns directly on a curved compound surface utilizing Geodesic, which is faithful to any curved surface, to minimize unnecessary distortions.
The paper presents a methodology to model three-dimensional reinforced concrete members by means of embedded discontinuity elements based on the Continuum Strong Discontinuous Approach (CSDA). Mixture theory concepts are used to model reinforced concrete as a 3D composite material constituted of concrete with long fibers (rebars) bundles oriented in different directions embedded in it. The effects of the rebars are modeled by phenomenological constitutive models devised to reproduce the axial non-linear behavior, as well as the bond-slip and dowel action. The paper presents the constitutive models assumed for the components and the compatibility conditions chosen to constitute the composite. Numerical analyses of existing experimental reinforced concrete members are presented, illustrating the applicability of the proposed methodology.
Recently, many patients related to heart disease have surgical operation by expanding a blood vessel to treat the angiostenosis. So far most angioplasties have been performed using balloon-dilative stent made of stainless steel. Some researchers are studying the stent made of shape memory alloy (SMA) to operate the angioplasty more easily. and there are several papers which introduce the angioplasty using SMA. However, most of the analysis models for stents are constructed using solid elements. So much computing time is required to solve the analysis model. In this study, we suggest the SMA stent model using 1D truss element which is much faster than stent model using 3D solid element. To represent non-linear behavior of SMA, we apply 1D SMA constitutive equation of Lagoudas'. Pseudo-elastic behavior of stent structures is presented as a numerical example.

LiDAR data processing steps include noise removal, filtering, classification, segmentation, shape recognition, modeling, and quality assessment. This paper focuses on modeling and accuracy evaluation of 3D objects with curved surfaces. The appropriate modeling functions were determined by analyzing surface patch shape. Existing methods for modeling curved surface features require linearization, initial approximation, and iteration of the non-linear functions. However, proposed method could directly estimate the unknown parameters of the modeling functions. The results demonstrate feasibility of the proposed method. The proposed method was applied to the simulated and real building data of hemi-spherical and semi-cylindrical surfaces. The parameters and accuracy of the modeling functions were estimated. It is expected that the proposed method would contribute to automatic modeling of various objects.
This study focused on the non-synoptic, tornado-like wind-induced effects on flexible horizontal structures that are extremely sensitive to winds. More specifically, the nonuniform, intensive vertical wind-velocity and transient natures of tornado events and their effects on the global behavior of a long-span bridge were investigated. In addition to the static part in the modeling of tornado-like wind-induced loads, the motion-induced effects were modeled using the semi-empirical model with a two-dimensional (2-D) indicial response function. Both nonlinear wind-induced static analysis and linear aeroelastic analysis in the time domain were conducted based on a 3-D finite-element model to investigate the bridge performance under the most unfavorable tornado pattern considering wind-structure interactions. The results from the present study highlighted the important effects due to abovementioned tornado natures (i.e., nonuniform, intensive vertical wind-velocity and transient features) on the long-span bridge, and hence may facilitate more appropriate wind design of flexible horizontal structures in the tornado-prone areas.
