  • Numerical analysis code has been developed to investigate the slab heating characteristics in a reheating furnace of a steel mill company. Unsteady 3-Dimensional behaviour can be predicted with the developed code. Premixed flame model is adopted for combustion phenomena and eddy dissipation model is used for turbulent combustion. Non -gray FVM radiation method is used to get a better accurate radiative solution. Slab movement can be fully traced from entrance into a reheating furnace until it#s exit and computation is performed during that period.

  • In this paper we propose a new approach for an analysis and a prediction of combustion instability of lean premixed gas turbines. Our approach is based on the Nyquist stability criterion in control theory and a transfer function representation of a one-dimensional (1D) thermoacoustic system. A key advantage of the proposed approach is that one can systematically characterize the effects of various parameters of a combustor system on combustion instability. Our analysis method was applied to a real combustion system and the analysis results were consistent with experimental data.

  • The combustion characteristics of anthracite, which follow a complex process with low reactivity, must be considered through the dynamic behavior of circulating fluidized bed (CFB) boilers. In this study, computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulation was performed to analyze the combustion characteristics of anthracite in a pilot scale 0.1 MWth Oxy-fuel circulating fluidized bed (Oxy-CFB) boiler. The 0.1MWth Oxy-CFB boiler is composed of combustor (0.15 m l.D., 10 m High), cyclone, return leg, and so on. To perform CFD analysis, a 3D simulation model reactor was designed and used. The anthracite used in the experiment has an average particle size of 1,070 ㎛ and a density of 2,326 kg/m3. The flow pattern of gas-solids inside the reactor according to the change of combustion environment from air combustion to oxygen combustion was investigated. At this time, it was found that the temperature distribution in air combustion and oxygen combustion showed a similar pattern, but the pressure distribution was lower in oxygen combustion. addition, since it has a higher CO2 concentration in oxygen combustion than in air combustion, it can be expected that carbon dioxide capture will take place actively. As a result, it was confirmed that this study can contribute to the optimized design and operation of a circulating fluidized bed reactor using anthracite.

  • In this work, the flow and combustion characteristics using a 3-D numerical simulation was evaluated for a shale gas fueled combustor in a commercial class gas turbine. The Standard k-e turbulence model, 2 step methane oxidation mechanism, Finite rate/Eddy dissipation reaction model, DTRM radiation model were employed and validated well at the baseline condition (Natural Gas, Pilot Ratio 0.2). Based on the validated models, the combustion characteristics of shale gas was evaluated for three pilot ratios cases. It was found that NOx concentrations for all shale gas cases were less than the that for city gas, which imply that, at the selected PRs, the condition for combustion stability is satisfied. In addition, for higher PR, whereas the average temperatures at the exit are the same, the NOx increases. It means that diffusion combustion portion increases due to the higher PR.

  • In this research, in order to study the spray, combustion, and emission characteristics of the common rail DME engine, the target engine was disassembled, and 3D CAD file was constructed using a 3D measurement machine and a rapid prototyping machine. Using the obtained 3D geometry, fine moving meshes are generated, and three dimensional non-steady turbulence flow field and combustion phenomenon including spray were numerically analyzed. As a result, IMEP of DME and diesel in medium and high speed revolution showed similar performance. As the DME fuel start to burn in spray area, the vaporized fuel rapidly spreads squish area in low speed revolution. In the case of DME engine, CO and NOx are relatively consistent with experiment results. It was found that the break-up, evaporation, collision model of DME fuel need to be properly adjusted through matching the characteristics of fuel and injector for further improvement.

  • The world is striving to transition to a carbon-neutral society. It is expected that using hydrogen instead of hydrocarbon fuel will contribute to this carbon neutrality. However, there is a need for combustion technology that controls the increased NOx emissions caused by hydrogen co-firing. Flameless combustion is one of the alternative technologies that resolves this problem. In this study, a numerical analysis was performed using the 1D opposed-flow diffusion flame model of Chemkin to analyze the characteristics of flameless combustion and the chemical reaction of methane-hydrogen fuel according to its hydrogen content and flue gas recirculation rate. In methane combustion, as the recirculation rate (Kv) increased, the temperature and heat release rate decreased due to an increase in inert gases. Also, increasing Kv from 2 to 3 achieved flameless combustion in which there was no endothermic region of heat release and the region of maximum heat release rate merged into one. In H2 100% at Kv 3, flameless combustion was achieved in terms of heat release, but it was difficult to determine whether flameless combustion was achieved in terms of flame structure. However, since the NOx formation of hydrogen flameless combustion was predicted to be similar to that of methane flameless combustion, complex considerations of flame structure, heat release, and NOx formation are needed to define hydrogen flameless combustion.

  • Numerical analysis code has been developed for investigating the combustion characteristics in a slab heater of a steel mill company. Unsteady full 3-Dimensional behaviour can be predicted with the code. Premixed flame model is adopted for combustion phenomena. And eddy dissipation model is used for turbulent flow and non gray FVM method for radiation. Slab movement can be fully traced from entrance into heater until it's exit and computation is performed during that period. Code was validated by comparing the calculation results with experimental ones for the bench scale heater.

  • In this paper, we used Helmholtz solver based on 3D finite element method to quantitatively analyze the effects of change of gain, time delay and time delay spread, which are the main variables of flame transfer function, on combustion instability in gas turbine combustor. The effects of the variable of flame transfer function on the frequency and growth rate, which are the main results of combustion instability, were analyzed by applying the conventional heat release fluctuation model and modified one considering the time spread. The analysis results showed that the change of gain and time delay in the same resonance mode affected the frequency of the given resonance modes as well as growth rate of the feedback instability, however, the effect of time delay spread was not relatively remarkable, compared with the dominant effect of time delay.

  • This study describes 3D RANS simulation of a 2.1 MW swirling pulverized coal flame in a semi-industrial scale furnace. The simulation of pulverized coal combustion involves various models for complex physical processes and needs information of pyrolysis rate, the yields and compositions of volatiles and char especially in coal conversion. The coal conversion information can be acquired by the experiment or the pre-processor code. The empirical model based on the experiment of the IFRF and the structural model based on the pre-processor code of the PC-COAL-LAB were evaluated against the measurement data.

  • The current study has developed an in-house 3D FEM code in order to model thermoacoustic problems in a gas turbine combustion system and compared calculation results of main instability characteristics with measured ones from a lab-scale partially-premixed combustor. From the comparison of calculation results with the measured data, the current model could successfully capture the harmonic longitudinal instability frequencies and their spatial distributions of the acoustic field as well as the growth rate of self-excited modes.
