  • Turnover rate of applied rice straw and rice straw compost in a rice paddy soil under the flooding and intermittent irrigation was studied. The chambers in duplicate were either planted or unplanted with rice. For planted chambers, the turnover rate to methane under the flooding increased with freshness of organic materials applied: 14.9% for RS5 (rice straw applied in May), 9.5 % for RS2 (rice straw incorporated in February), and 4.0% for RSC (rice straw compost amended in May). Similar trend was found in turnover rate to methane under the intermittent irrigation: 9.8% for RS5, 5.5% for RS2, and 2.1% for RSC. For planted chambers, turnover rate to methane under the flooding was generally 1.64 times higher than that under the intermittent irrigation. In contrast, for unplanted chambers, the turnover rate to methane under the flooding increased with freshness of organic materials applied: 8.7% for RS5, 3.3% for RS2, and 3.0% for RSC. Similar trend was observed in chambers under the intermittent irrigation: 5.4% for RS5, 3.0% for RS2, and 1.4% for RSC. For unplanted chambers, the turnover rate to methane under the flooding was generally 1.52 times higher than that under the intermittent irrigation.

  • This paper presents the importance of corrosion control and protection technology with a real case study of heater tube rupture damaged by High temperature H2S-H2 corrosion in the refinery. The heater was operated at the Hydrocracking unit and the operation temperature and pressure was $340^{\circ}C$ and $18kg/cm^{3}$ respectively. Top side of the convection tube was thinned by high temperature hydrogen sulfide and hydrogen gas as a uniform corrosion and finally ruptured under operation pressure. Damaged area (Convection tube zone) was blocked by protection wall, so it was impossible to inspect with conventional nondestructive examination. Instead the elbow area which is out of the protection wall was inspected regularly to evaluate the corrosion rate of convection tube indirectly. However the operation temperature and the phase of the process stream was different between inside the chamber and outside the chamber. As a result, it caused severe corrosion to the horizontal convection tube inside the chamber comparing to the elbow outside the chamber. Finally convection tube was corroded more rapidly than the elbow and ruptured after 13 years operation. Because of the rupture, the heater was totally burned and the operation was stopped for 3 months until it has been reconstructed. To prevent this kind of corrosion problem and accident, corrosion control should be strengthened and protection technology should be improved.

  • A calorimeter of 2-ton thrust level rocket engine chamber has been developed to measure the wall heat flux. The liner of the chamber is made of copper-chromium alloy to maximize the heat transfer performance and structural strength. 1-D design code based on empirical correlations has been used for the prediction of the global thermal characteristics while 3-D CFD has been applied for the verification of local cooling performance. The predicted average wall heat flux at the throat is 43 $MW/m^{2}$ for the combustion chamber pressure of 53 bar. The chamber structure is confirmed to be safe at the pressure of 150 bar through 2-D stress analysis and measurement of the strain of the test species. Finally, the test of pressurizing the calorimeter chamber has been performed with water at the pressure of 150 bar in room temperature environment. No thermal damage has been detected after the hot-fire test in the test nozzle of same cooling performance with the developed calorimeter though the measured throat heat flux is higher than the design value by 10%.

  • Egg quality indices are related with freshness, size of air chamber, loss of weight, and viscosity of the yolk and the protein. However, since the described quality parameters require measured in a destructive way, it is not suitable to inspect the egg quality with complete enumeration. Therefore, this study was performed to investigate the potential of image analysis method for evaluation of internal egg quality. Samples of 90 fresh eggs were collected immediately after laying and stored up to 24 days. Five eggs were randomly drawn from each storage condition (packing vs unpacking) at a regular interval and loss of weight, specific gravity and size of air chamber were measured. The image analysis for nondestructive measurement of size of air chamber was also studied. Results showed that the egg weight and gravity gradually decreased with increasing of storage days, while the size of air chamber linear increased caused by evaporation of water through the shell. A relationship a between conventional method and the image analysis method for measuring the size of air chamber was developed with the correlation coefficient of 0.928. The new finding implied that image analysis might provide a useful nondestructive tool to assess internal egg quality.

  • We have studied the effective point of measurement for cylindrical ion chamber in water phantom for medical electron beams. Markus parallel plate chamber water phantom are used for the measurement of depth dose to determine the depth of the effective point of measurement for various energies(for electron 6MeV, 9MeV, 12MeV, 16MeV, and 20MeV; Co-60; for photon 6MV, 15MV). Cylindrical ion chambes(PTW233643 with r=2.75mm, PR-05P with r=2mm, and PM30 wiht r=15mm are used for the measurement of depth dose by same mtethod and the values of d$\_$50/ and R$\_$p/ obtained by three cylindrical chambers were compared with those of a flat chamber. From this we could evaluate the effective measuring points of cylindrical ion chamber. The effective point of measurement was estimated as 0.4~0.6r shifted toward surface from the center of the chamber for electron beam, 0.3~0.7r for $\^$60/Co X-ray.

  • Hot-firing tests were performed on two 30 tonf-class regenerative cooling combustion chambers, with different injector distribution and wall cooling method. In the paper, the combustion stability test results were analyzed and presented. The pressure fluctuation and stability rating test(SRT) results of the combustion chambers were examined to evaluate combustion stability. The combustion chambers exhibited satisfactory results on combustion stability. The RMS values of the chamber pressure fluctuation were less than 3% of the chamber pressure and the decay time of artificial pressure peaks was measured to be around 10% of the reference decay time. It is interesting that the RMS values of pressure fluctuation in the combustion chamber with film cooling are smaller than those in the chamber with cooling injectors at the periphery row.

  • A vortex chamber is a simple device that separates compressed gas into a high-temperature stream and a low-temperature stream. It is increasing in popularity as a next-generation heat exchanger, but the flow physics associated with it is not yet well understood. In the present study, both experimental and numerical analyses were performed to investigate the temperature separation phenomenon inside the vortex chamber. Static pressures and temperatures were measured using high-sensitivity pressure transducers and thermocouples, respectively. Computational fluid dynamics was applied to simulate 3D unsteady compressible flows. The simulation results showed that the temperature separation is strongly dependent on the diameter of the vortex chamber and the supply pressure at the inlet ports, where the latter is closely related to the viscous work. The previous concept of a pressure gradient wave may not be a reasoning for temperature separation phenomenon inside the vortex chamber.

  • BACKGROUND: The closed chamber method is the most commonly used for measuring greenhouse gas emissions from rice fields. This method has the advantages of being simple, easily available and economical. However, a measurement result using the chamber method is an estimated value and is complete when the uncertainty is estimated. The methane emissions from a rice paddy account for the largest portion of the greenhouse gas emissions in the agriculture sectors. Although assessment of uncertainty components affecting methane emission from a rice paddy is necessary to take account of dispersion characteristics, research on these uncertainty components is very rare to date. The goal of this study was to elucidate influencing factors on measurement uncertainty of methane concentrations measured by a closed automated chamber system from a rice paddy. METHODS AND RESULTS: The methane sampling system is located in the rice paddy in Gyeonggi-do Agricultural Research and Extension Services (37°13'15"N, 127°02'22"E). The primary measurement uncertainty components influencing methane concentrations (influencing factors) investigated in this research were repeatability, reproducibility and calibration in the aspects of methane sampling and analytical instrumentation. The magnitudes of the relative standard uncertainty of each influencing factor were quantified and compared. CONCLUSION: Results of this study showed what influencing factors were more important in determination of methane concentrations measured using the chamber system and analytical instrumentation located in the monitoring site. Quantifying the measurement uncertainty of the methane concentrations in this study would contribute to improving measurement quality of methane fluxes.

  • A numerical simulation is attempted for the regenerative cooling heat transfer processes of the liquid propellant rocket engine. The heat transfer from the combustion gases to the thrust chamber wall is called gas side heat transfer. This heat is conducted radially to the coolant through the carbon deposit and metallic wall of thrust chamber Finally, this heat is convected away by the coolant flowing along the passages in the thrust chamber. The equivalence of these three heat fluxes of the above processes is utilized to determine the coolant side wall temperature, gas side wall temperature and the heat flux. When the number and shape(width, height) of coolant passages, the shape(size) of thrust chamber, oxidant and fuel properties, coolant properties, oxidant/fuel mixture ratio, coolant inlet temperature, the thickness of carbon deposit formed along the thrust chamber wall during combustion are given, reasonable radial direction temperature distributions and heat fluxes along the thrust chamber axis are obtained.
