Unsteady three-dimensional flowfields generated by transverse fuel injection into a supersonic mainstream are simulated with a DES turbulence model. Comparisons are made with experimental results in term of the temporal eddy position and eddy formation frequency. The vorticity field around the jet exit is also analyzed to understand the formation mechanism of the jet vortical structures. Results indicate that the DES model correctly predicts the convection characteristics of the large scale eddies. However, it is also observed that the numerical results slightly overpredict the eddy formation frequency. The jet vortical structures are developed from the competing vortices in the recirculation region of upstream boundary.
Cell migration is one of the essential mechanisms responsible for complex biological processes. Intensive researches have begun to elucidate the mechanisms and search intriguing conditions for efficient control of cell migration. One general mechanism that is widely applicable for cells including Escherichia coli, amoebae and endothelial cell is chemotaxis. The single cell study for bacterial chemotaxis has an advantage over studies with the population of cells in providing a clearer observation of cell migration, which leads to more accurate assessments of chemotaxis. In this paper, we propose a three-dimensional model considering a single bacterium to study its chemotaxis. The semi-implicit Fourier spectral method is applied for high efficiency and numerical stability. The simulation results reveal rich dynamics of cell migration and provide quantitative assessments of bacterial chemotaxis with various chemoattractant gradient fields.
Unsteady-state temperature distributions and thermal deformations of the spindle of a high precision lathe are studied in this paper. Three dimensional model is built for analysis, and the amount of heat generation of bearing and the thermal characteristic values including heat transfer coefficient are estimated. Temperature distributions and thermal deformations of a model are analyzed using the finite element method and the thermal boundary values. Numerical results are compared with the measured data. The results show that the thermal deformations and the temperature distributions of the dpindle of a high precision lathe can be reasonably estimated using the three dimensional model and the finite element method.
The present study conducted a numerical modeling on the diesel SCR (selective catalytic reduction) system using ammonia as a reductant over vanadium-based catalysts $(V_2O_5-WO_3/TiO_2)$. Transient modeling for ammonia adsorption/desorption on the catalyst surface was firstly carried out, and then the SCR reaction was modeled considering for it. In the current catalytic reaction model, we extended the pure chemical kinetic model based on laboratory-scale powdered-phase catalyst experiments to the chemico-physical one applicable to realistic commercial SCR reactors. To simulate multi-dimensional heat and mass transfer phenomena, the SCR reactor was modeled in two dimensional, axisymmetric domain using porous medium approach. Also, since diesel engines operate in transient mode, the present study employed an unsteady model. In addition, throughout simulations using the developed code, effects of space velocity on the DeNOx performance were investigated.
In this study, a new three-dimensional finite element analysis model of high-speed railway bridges considering train-bridge interaction, in which various improved finite elements are used for modeling structural members, is proposed. The box-type bridge deck of a railway bridge is modeled by the NFS(Nonconforming Flat Shell) elements with 6 degrees of freedom. Track structures are idealized using the beam finite elements with the offset of beam nodes and those on Winkler foundation with two parameters. And, the vehicle model devised for a high-speed train is employed, which has an articulated bogie system. By Lagrange's equations of motion, the equations of motion of a bridge-train system can be formulated. Finally, by deriving the equations of the forces acting on a bridge considering bridge-train interaction the complete system matrices of total bridge-train system can be constructed. As numerical examples of this study, 2-span PC box-girder bridge is analyzed and results are compared with experimental results.
The present work evaluates the effects of mixing vane shape on the flow structure and heat transfer downstream of mixing vane in a subchannel of fuel assembly. by obtaining velocity and pressure fields. turbulent intensity. flow-mixing factors. heat transfer coefficient and friction factor using three-dimensional RANS analysis. Four different shapes of mixing vane. which were designed by the authors were tested to evaluate the performances in enhancing the heat transfer. Standard k-$\varepsilon$ model is used as a turbulence closure model. and. periodic and symmetry conditions are set as boundary conditions. The flow blockage ratio is kept constant. but the twist angle of mixing vane is changed. The results with three turbulence models were compared with experimental data.

The RCS characteristics of stealth modified three-surface aircraft are analyzed in this paper. Prototype A is built with CATIA software and the three-dimensional digital models of modified stealth three-surface B and C are also designed based on carrier-based aircraft Su-33; the numerical simulation of RCS characteristics of three-surface aircraft is conducted with RCSAnsys software based on physical optics method and the method of equivalent currents; The following results are obtained by comparative analysis and mathematical statistics: (1) by the use of physical optics method and equivalent electromagnetic current method, the scattering intensity for each part of the model and RCS characteristic of the aircraft can be analyzed efficiently and accurately; (2) compared with model A, the mean RCS value of model B is reduced to 14.1% in forward direction and 48.1% in lateral direction; (3) compared with model A, the mean RCS value of model C decreases to 11.4% in forward direction and 21.6% in lateral direction. The results are expected to provide theoretical basis and technical support to the conceptual design of aircraft and stealth technology research.
In the present numerical analysis, investigation of the effect of blade loadings from design shape on the slip factor variation was studied. Both the Eckardt radial bladed impeller and the backswept impeller were analyzed. In addition, a new design of the blade profile was arbitrarily attempted to generate a center-loading pattern in the original backswept impeller. Three dimensional compressible Navier-Stokes flow analysis with the Baldwin-Lomax turbulence model was applied to get the numerical slip factor at each impeller exit plane using the mass-averaging technique. The numerical slip (actors are in good agreement with the experimental ones and the Wiesner's slip factors deviate further from the numerical and experimental ones in both backswept impellers. Deviation angles and meridional channel loadings are found in no relation with the trend of change of the slip factor. Blade-to-blade loadings in midspan location are, however, found to have a direct relationship, especially at the sections where maximum loadings we to be expected. That information can be utilized in establishing an improved expression for slip factors in the future.
The numerical simulations of flowfield and pollutant dispersion over two-dimensional hills of various shapes are described. The Reynolds-averaged Wavier-Stokes equations and concentration diffusion equation based on the gradient diffusion theory have been applied to the atmospheric shear flow over the bell-shaped hills which are basic components of the complex terrain. The flow characteristics such as velocity profiles of the geophysical boundary layer, speed-up phenomena, mean pollutant concentration profiles are compared with experimental data to validate the present numerical procedure and it has been found that the present numerical results agree well with experiments and other numerical data. It has been also found that the distributions of ground level concentration are strongly influenced by the source location and height.
