The out-of-squareness is one of the error sources that affect the positioning accuracy of machine tools and coordinate measuring machines. Laser interferometer is widely used to measure the position and angular errors, and can measure the squareness using an optical square. However, the squareness measurement using the laser interferometer is difficult, as compared to other errors due to complicated optics setup and Abbe's error occurrence. The effect of out-of-squareness mainly appears at the face-diagonal of the movable plane. The diagonal displacements are also affected by the position dependent geometric errors. In this study, the squareness estimation techniques via diagonal displacement measurement using the laser interferometer without an optical square were proposed. For accurate estimation and measurement time reduction, the errors selected from proposed discriminant were measured. Discrepancy between the proposed technique with the laser interferometer (with an optical square) result was $0.6{\mu}rad$.
The objective of this research is in the development of a flexible 3-dimensional inspection system for the sculptured surface by integrating the Coordinate Measuring Machine (CMM), CAD database, and vision system. To achieve the proposed flexible inspection system, two research categories are discussed in the study: new inspection planning method includes a new measuring point selection method and various new probe path generation methods. The object recognition and localization process for the unknown surface can be easily carried out by introducing a new concept called "Z-Layer". The experimental results indicate that the developed flexible inspection system, with the proposed algorithm, can be inplemented in real situation.situation.
This study investigates the effects of machining parameters as they relate to the quality characteristics of machined features. Two most important quality characteristics are set as the dimensional accuracy and the surface roughness. Before any newly acquired machine tool is put to use for production, it is important to test the machine in a systematic way to find out how different parameter settings affect machining quality. The empirical verification was made by conducting a Design of Experiment (DOE) with 3 levels and 3 factors on a state-of-the-art Cincinnati Hawk Arrow 750 Vertical Machining Center (VMC). Data analysis revealed that the significant factor was the Hardness of the material and the significant interaction effect was the Hardness + Feed for dimensional accuracy, while the significant factor was Speed for surface roughness. Since the equally important thing is the capability of the instruments from which the quality characteristics are being measured, a comparison was made between the VMC touch probe readings and the measurements from a Mi-tutoyo coordinate measuring machine (CMM) on bore diameters. A machine mounted touch probe has gained a wide acceptance in recent years, as it is more suitable for the modern manufacturing environment. The data vindicated that the VMC touch probe has the capability that is suitable for the production environment. The test results can be incorporated in the process plan to help maintain the machining quality in the subsequent runs.
This paper presents a method to measure a large surface shape using atomic force microscopy, which has been used mostly for measuring over very tiny surfaces. Experiments are performed to measure a step height and a slope of a test sample. The proposed method is rigorously compared with the coordinate measuring machine. The repetition accuracy and the effects of the set point are also studied. The experimental results show that the proposed method is reliable and should be effective to measure both the nano-accuracy surface profile as well as the micro-accuracy global shape of a macro/micro parts using atomic force microscope.
This report presents an automatic measurement method of 3-dimensional profiles of free-formed surfaces, by using a touch a touch-trigger contact probe along with a conventional coordinate measuring machine. The method proceeds in three steps; The surface profile under consideration is traced by the probe in an automatic manner, and then its measured data is compensated by considering the actual probe radius. Finally the compensated data is rearranged in the form suitable for the further processings of CAD/CAM applications. Some experimental results are discussed to verify the validity of the method suggested in this study.
Laser scanner are getting used for inspection and reverse engineering in industry such as motors, electronic products, dies and molds. However, due to the lack of efficient scanning technique, the tasks become limited to the low accuracy purpose. The main reasons for this limitation for usefulness are caused from the optical drawback, such as irregular reflection, scanning direction normal to measuring surface, the influence of surface integrity, and other optical disturbances. To overcome these drawback of laser scanner, this study propose the mechanism to reduce the optical trouble by using the 2 kinds of rotational movement axis and by composing the spherical coordinate to scanning the surface keeping normal direction consistently. So, it could be designed and interfaced the measuring device to realize that mechanism, and then it could acquisite the accurate 3D form cloud data. Also, these data are compared with the standard master ball and the data acquisited from the touch point sensor, to evaluate the accuracy and stability of measurement and to demonstrate the implementation of an dental tooth purpose system

Generally, the optical components are fabricated by grinding, lapping, and polishing. And, those processes take long time to obtain such a high surface quality. Therefore, in the case of large optical component, the on-machine inspection (OMI) is essential. Because, the work piece is fragile and difficult to set up for fabricating and measuring. This paper is concerned about a swing-arm method for measuring surface profile of large optical concave mirror. The measuring accuracy and uncertainty for suggested method are studied. The experimental results show that this method is useful specially in lapping process with the accuracy of $3\~5\;{\mu}m$. Those inspection data are provided for correcting the residual figuring error in lapping or polishing processes.
This paper presents techniques for evaluation and compensation of total measuring errors in a commercial CMM. The probe errors as well as the machine geometric errors are assessed from probing of the mechanical artefacts such as shpere, step, and rings. For the error compensation, the integrated volumetric error equations are considered, including the probe error adn the machine geometric error. The error compensation is performed on the absolute scale coordinate system, in order to overcome the redundant degree of freedom in the CMM with multi-axis probe. A interface box and corresponding software driver are developed for data intercepting/correction between the machine controller and machine, thus the volumetric errors can be compensated in real time with minimum interference to the operating software and hardware of a commercial CMM. The developed system applied to a practical CMM installed on the shop floor, and demonstrated its performance.
This paper presents an atomic force probe for triggering coordinate measuring machines(CMMs). A rigorous comparison is made between touch trigger probe and atomic force probe for CMMs. Typical CMMs(touch trigger probe based CMMs) often lead to some errors associated with object curvature and difference in triggering sensitivity. Their applicability is limited only to hard objects. The aim of this work is to develop a trigger sensor for CMMs using atomic force. In order to show the applicability of atomic force as a trigger sensor, a cylindrical shape is measured with a CMM and an atomic force microscope. Three different touch probe heads with different ball sizes are tested. The experiments show that smaller ball provides better results for curved objects. The experimental results also show that the performance of atomic force as a trigger sensor is about that of the smallest ball probe. In addition, experiments are also performed to measure soft objects. Finally, this paper suggests and verifies a trigger sensor using atomic force for CMMs.
