  • Resistivity method has been used for the dam safety inspection and, for the convenience of fieldwork, two-dimensional (2D) resistivity data has been usually measured along the dam crest. However, since the dam has three-dimensional (3D) structure, 2D resistivity survey along the dam crest violates 2D assumption and 3D effects caused by 3D topography and material properties in the dam distort the inversion result of 2D resistivity data acquired along the dam crest. Furthermore, it is really hard to evaluate the 3D structure of the dam and 3D leakage pathway using 2D resistivity survey because 2D resistivity survey can provide only 2D resistivity section beneath the survey line. In this study, 3D resistivity survey was conducted at a dam in Korea. By comparing the results from 3D and 2D resistivity surveys, merit and demerits of 3D survey were investigated. Finally, it was confirmed that 3D survey can provide more accurate information about the dam status and 3D leakage pathway compared to the 2D survey. Therefore the 3D resistivity survey should be actively expanded for more accurate dam safety inspection even though more time and expense are required.

  • Three-dimensional (3D) resistivity method is an effective tool in the engineering site survey because it can provide a 3D resistivity distribution of the site. In this study, we tried to find out faults, fractures and coal seams that can cause the collapse of the tunnel. We carried out 2D resistivity survey along 5 parallel lines and 11 cross lines and merged all the apparent resistivity data for 3D inversion. Finally, from the 3D resistivity image and drilling data we presented the 3D distribution of faults, fractures and coal seams that are considered the main cause of the tunnel collapse.

  • Resistivity method is a practical and effective geophysical technique to detect leakage zones in embankment dams. Generally, resistivity survey conducted along the crest assumes that the embankment dam has a 2D structure. However, the 3D topography of the embankment distorts significantly resistivity data measured on anywhere of the dam. This study evaluates the influence from 3D effects created by specific dam geometry and effects of water level fluctuations through the 3D finite element modeling technique. Also, a comparison between different locations of survey line are carried out, and topographic correction technique is developed for the resistivity data obtained along the embankment dam. Furthermore, using synthetic resistivity data for an embankment dam model with leakage zone, detectability of leakage zones is estimated through 2.5D inversion.

  • Electrical resistivity survey is widely applied to the dam seepage problems. Main purpose of the resistivity survey is to delineate the inhomogeneity in the dam. In this study, two- (2-D) and three-dimensional (3-D) resistivity survey methodology and corresponding interpretations of the data have been analyzed using 3-D resistivity modeling results. Since resistivity structures beneath the dam and its shape are 3-D in nature, we could get more accurate image of the dam structures using 3-D survey compared to 2-D survey even though we cannot employ the grid-shape survey layout.

  • Resistivity method is a practical and effective geophysical technique to detect leakage zones in embankment dams. Generally, resistivity survey conducted along the crest assumes that the embankment dam has a 2D structure. However, the 3D topography of embankments distorts significantly resistivity data measured on anywhere of the dam. In this study, we analyse the influence from 3D effects created by specific dam geometry through the 3D finite element modeling technique. We compared 3D effects when resistivity surveys are carried out on the upstream slope, left edge of the crest, center of the crest, right edge of the crest and downstream slope. We ensure that 3D effect is greatly different according to the location of the survey line and data obtained on the downstream slope are most greatly influenced by 3D dam geometry. Also, resistivity data are more influenced by the electrical resistivity of materials constituting reservoir than 3D effects due to specific dam geometry. Furthermore, using resistivity data synthesized with 3D modeling program for an embankment dam model with leakage zone, we analyse the possibility of leakages detection from 2D resistivity surveys performed along the embankment dam.

  • Recently as the interest in the development of domestic ore deposits has increased, we can easily find some studies on exploration geophysics-based ore-deposit survey in literature. Based on the fact that mineralized zone are generally more conductive than surrounding media, electrical resistivity survey among several geophysical surveys has been applied to investigate metallic ore deposits. Most of them are grounded on 2-D survey. However, 2-D inversion may lead to some misinterpretation for 3-D geological structures. In this study, we investigate the feasibility of the 3-D electrical resistivity survey to 3-D vein-type ore deposits. We first simulate 2-D dipole-dipole survey data for survey lines normal to the strike and 3-D pole-pole survey data, and then perform 3-D inversion. For 3-D ore-body structures, we assume a width-varying dyke, a wedge-shaped, and a fault model. The 3-D inversion results are compared to 2-D inversion results. By comparing 3-D inversion results for 2-D dipole-dipole survey data to 3-D inversion results for 3-D pole-pole survey data, we could note that the 2-D dipole-dipole survey data yield better inversion results than the 3-D pole-pole data, which is due to the main characteristic of the pole-pole array. From these results, we are convinced that if we have certain information on the direction of the strike, it would be desirable to apply 2-D dipole-diple survey for the survey lines normal to the strike. However, in most cases, we do not have any information on the direction of the strike, because we already developed the ore deposit with the outcrops and the remaining ore deposits are buried under the surface. In that case, performing 3-D pole-pole electrical resistivity survey would be a reasonable choice to obtain more accurate interpretation on ore body structure in spite of low resolution of pole-pole array.

  • The MH21 Research Consortium has conducted a high-resolution 3D seismic survey and a seafloor geochemical survey, to explore methane hydrate reservoirs in the eastern Nankai Trough, offshore Japan. Excellent geological information about shallow formations was obtained from the high-resolution 3D seismic survey, which was designed to image the shallow formations where methane hydrates exist. The information is useful in constructing a geological and geochemical model, and especially to understand the complex geology of seafloor, including geochemical manifestations and the structure of migration conduits for methane gas or methane-bearing fluid. By comparing methane seep sites observed by submersibles with seismic sections, some significant relationships between methane hydrate reservoirs, free gas accumulations below the seafloor, and seafloor manifestations are recognised. Bathymetric charts and seafloor reflection amplitude maps, constructed from seismic reflections from the seafloor, are also useful in understanding the relationships over a vast area. A new geochemical seafloor survey targeted by these maps is required. The relationships between methane hydrate reservoirs and seafloor manifestations are becoming clearer from interpretation of high-resolution 3D seismic data. The MH21 Research Consortium will continue to conduct seafloor geochemical surveys based on the geological and geochemical model constructed from high-resolution 3D seismic data analysis. In this paper, we introduce a basis for exploration of methane hydrate reservoirs in Japan by fusion of 3D seismic exploration and seafloor geochemical surveys.

  • The application of geophysical survey methods need to be integrated to meet the increasing demands of imaging of the subsurface in the practical application of civil engineering, underground water survey and environmental problems. This paper examines the IP survey which can be surveyed simultaneously with DC resistivity survey. In this study, 3-D IP modeling algorithm was developed. The 3-D IP modeling algorithm was based on 3-D resistivity modeling by finite-element method. The result of 3-D modeling was compared with 2-dimensional modeling result. The result showed that the 3-D modeling algorithm developed in this study was accurate. Finally, the 3-D modeling algorithm developed in this paper will be useful for the study of IP data.
