  • Proper door effort, required force to open or close a vehicle door, is an essential door design factor for the safety of passengers and pedestrians. Section shape of the door checker arm is the most influential design parameter for achieving a door effort design target. In this research. an analysis procedure to predict door effort using a simplified plane strain finite element model wes investigated for two passenger cars, for which mechanism of checker systems were: different. The variation of checker arm force to be required during moving on arm in opening and closing direction was estimated through analysis, and the result was transformed to the door effort with respect to door opening angle by considering door characteristics. Also, the self·closing force due to door weight was theoretically calculated and added to the door effort from checker arm force. Finally the estimated results of door effort were compared with test results.

  • This study examined the problems of existing vehicles to propose alternatives to improve the crashworthiness of railway freight cars through collision acceleration analysis using a one-dimensional collision analysis method. A collision scenario of railway shunting and crash accidents was selected from the collision accident cases and international standards. A one-dimensional collision simulation using LS-DYNA was performed according to those scenarios. As a result, the acceleration level of the freight wagon was calculated to be under 2g and was predicted to meet the EN 12663 standard in the shunting situation. On the other hand, the result of crash simulation with an impact velocity between 10 and 15 km/h revealed the shock absorber capacity of the railway coupler to be insufficient in a crash situation, resulting in increased acceleration, and carbody deformation could be predicted. As a method of improving the crashworthiness, a deformation tube-type energy absorber was applied to the coupler system, and collision analysis was performed again with new energy absorption strategy. Overall, the simulation showed that the acceleration level was decreased by 12% of the conventional freight-car energy absorption system.

  • The three-dimensional precision numerical analysis was performed using the finite element model applied with the railway track model consisting of rails, As a result of analyzing the track deformation level of the existing tunnel due to the excavation work adjacent to the urban transit, it was found that the evaluation criteria (allowed values) of conventional railways lines were satisfied. Based on the numerical analysis, it was analyzed that the results of the prediction of the tunnel structural stability of due to the excavation work and the level of the tunnel deformation occurring at the actual site could be approximated as closely as possible.

  • This paper describes the thermal analysis which can calculate the ablation depth and temperature distribution of the rocket nozzle liner allowing geometry change caused by the ablation of nozzle liner. In this analysis, Zvyagin's model is used for surface ablation and Yaroslavtseva's model for in-depth pyrolysis. A deforming finite-element grid is used to account for external-boundary movement due to the erosion of thermal liner. The accuracy of the present numerical method is evaluated with a rocket nozzle liner and the numerical solutions are favorably agreed with experimental data. The temporal variations of temperature and ablation depth at the thermal liner of another rocket nozzle are numerically simulated and the results are discussed. Special emphasis is given to the effects of kinetic constants for carbon-carbon and carbon-phenolic composites on the ablation depth of thermal liner.

  • In the present study, we proposed a new numerical wave tank model to analyze the vertical tension-leg circular floating bodies, using a 2-D Navier-Stokes solver. An IBM(Immersed Boundary Method) capable of handling interactions between waves and moving structures with complex geometry on a standard regular Cartesian grid system is coupled to the VOF(Volume of Fluid) method for tracking the free surface. Present numerical results for the motions of the floating body were compared with existing experimental data as well as numerical results based on FAVOR(Fractional Area Volume Obstacle Representation) algorithm. For detailed examinations of the present model, the additional hydraulic experiments for floating motions and free surface transformations were conducted. Further, the versatility of the proposed numerical model was verified via the numerical and physical experiments for the general rectangular floating bodies. Numerical results were compared with experiments and good agreement was archived.

  • For the same configuration of two-dimensional finite element models, 6-node element exhibits stiffer bending stiffness than 8-node element. This is true in the relation between 16-node element and 20-node element for three-dimensional model. This stiffening phenomenon comes from the elimination of several mid nodes from full-node elements. Therefore, this may be called 'relative stiffness stiffening phenomenon'. It seems that there are a couple of ways to correct the stiffening effect, however, we could find only one effective method-the method of modification of Gauss sampling points-which passes the patch test and does not alter other kinds of stiffness, such as extensional stiffness. The quantity of modification is a function of Poisson's ratios of the constituent materials. We could obtain two modification equations, one for plane stress case and the other for plane strain case. This method can be extended to 3-dimensional solid elements. Except the exact plane strain cases, most 3-dimensional plates could be modeled successfully with 16-node element modified by the equation for the plane stress case. The effectiveness of the modification method is checked by applying it to several examples with excellent improvements. In numerical examples, beams with various boundary conditions are subjected to static and time-dependent loads. Free and forced motion analyses of beams and plates are also tested. The beam and plate may be composed of isotropic multilayers as well as a single layer.

  • A resistivity method has been applied to wide range of engineering and environmental problems with the help of automatic and precise data acquisition. Thus, more accurate modeling and inversion of time-lapse monitoring data are required since resistivity monitoring has been introduced to quantitatively find out subsurface changes With respect to time. Here, we used the finite element method (FEM) for 3D resistivity modeling since the method is easy to realize complex topography and arbitrary shaped anomalous bodies. In the FEM, the linear elements, also referred to as first order elements, have certain advantages of simple formulation and narrow bandwidth of system equation. However, the linear elements show the poor accuracy and slow convergence of the solution with respect to the number of elements or nodes. To achieve the higher accuracy of finite element solution, high order elements are generally used. In this study, we developed a 3D resistivity modeling program using high order Serendipity elements. Comparing the Serendipity element solutions for a cube model with the linear element solutions, we assured that the Serendipity element solutions are more accurate than the linear element solutions in the 3D resistivity modeling.
