  • This paper presents a two-dimensional type inheritance hierarchy index(2D-THI) for XML databases. XML Schema is one of schema models for the XML documents supporting. The type inheritance. The conventional indexing techniques for XML databases can not support XML queries on type inheritance hierarchies. We construct a two-dimensional index structure using multidimensional file organizations for supporting type inheritance hierarchy in XML queries. This indexing technique deals with the problem of clustering index entries in the two-dimensional domain space that consists of a key element domain and a type identifier domain based on the user query pattern. This index enhances query performance by adjusting the degree of clustering between the two domains. For performance evaluation, we have compared our proposed 2D-THI with the conventional class hierarchy indexing techniques in object-oriented databases such as CH-index and CG-tree through the cost model. As the result of the performance evaluations, we have verified that our proposed two-dimensional type inheritance indexing technique can efficiently support the query Processing in XML databases according to the query types.

  • We propose a rigorous 2D approximation technique for the 3D waveguide structures; it can minimize the well-known approximation errors of the commonly used effective index method. The main concept of the proposed technique is to compensate for the effective cladding index in the equivalent slab model of the original channel waveguide from the modal effective index calculated by the nonuniform 2D finite difference method. With simulations, we used the proposed technique to calculate the coupling characteristics of a directional coupler by the 2D beam propagation method, and the results were almost exactly the same as the results calculated by the 3D beam propagation method.

  • The distinguishing number (index) D(G) (D'(G)) of a graph G is the least integer d such that G has an vertex labeling (edge labeling) with d labels that is preserved only by a trivial automorphism. The strong product G ☒ H of two graphs G and H is the graph with vertex set V (G) × V (H) and edge set {{(x1, x2),(y1, y2)}|xiyi ∈ E(Gi) or xi = yi for each 1 ≤ i ≤ 2.}. In this paper we study the distinguishing number and the distinguishing index of strong product of two graphs. We prove that for every k ≥ 2, the k-th strong power of a connected S-thin graph G has distinguishing index equal two.

  • The aim of this study is to provide the dynamic convergence index that reflected the inherent characteristics of the convergence phenomenon and utilized the nationally-funded R&D projects data, thereby suggesting useful information about the direction of the national convergence R&D strategy. The dynamic convergence index that we suggested was made of two indicators: persistency and diversity. From a time-series perspective, the persistency index, which measures the degree of continuous convergence of multidisciplinary nationally-funded R&D projects, and the diversity index, which measures the degree of binding with heterogeneous research areas. We conducted the empirical experiment with 151,248 convergence R&D projects during the 2015~2021 time period. The results showed that convergence R&D projects in both public health and life sciences appeared the highest degree of persistency. It was presumed that the degree of persistency has increased again due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Meanwhile, the degree of diversity has risen with combining with disciplinary such as materials, chemical engineering, and brain science areas to solve social problems including mental health, depression, and aging. This study not only provides implications for improving the concept and definition of dynamic convergence in terms of persistency and diversity for national convergence R&D strategy but also presented dynamic convergence index and analysis methods that can be practically applied for directing public R&D programs.

  • Let G be a simple connected graph with n vertices and m edges, with a sequence of vertex degrees $d_1{\geq}d_2{\geq}{\cdots}{\geq}d_n$ > 0. A vertex-degree topological index, referred to as harmonic index, is defined as $H={\sum{_{i{\sim}j}}{\frac{2}{d_i+d_j}}$, where i ~ j denotes the adjacency of vertices i and j. Lower and upper bounds of the index H are obtained.

  • The hyper-Zagreb index HM(G) of a simple graph G is defined as the sum of the terms (du+dv)2 over all edges uv of G, where du denotes the degree of the vertex u of G. In this paper, we present several upper and lower bounds on the hyper-Zagreb index in terms of some molecular structural parameters and relate this index to various well-known molecular descriptors.

  • Let G be a simple connected graph with n vertices and m edges. Denote by d1 ≥ d2 ≥ ⋯ ≥ dn > 0 and d(e1) ≥ d(e2) ≥ ⋯ ≥ d(em) sequences of vertex and edge degrees, respectively. If vertices vi and vj are adjacent, we write i ~ j. The general sum-connectivity index is defined as 𝒳α(G) = ∑i~j(di + dj)α, where α is an arbitrary real number. Firstly, we determine a relation between 𝒳α(G) and 𝒳α-1(G). Then we use it to obtain some new bounds for 𝒳α(G).

  • The 'Mixing Index($D_I$)' is used as a conventional guidance measuring the degree of mixing for multiphase flows. For the case when insoluble solutions flow in a passive micromixer, a new method to calculate $D_I$ is proposed. The 'Vortex Index(${\Omega}_I$)' is suggested and formulated. We infer that ${\Omega}_I$ relates to the degree of chaotic advection. Various arbitrary shaped microchannels were tested to calculate the $D_I\;and\;{\Omega}_I$, and then a simple algebraic equation, $D_I=Aexp(B{\Omega}_I)$, is obtained. This equation may be used instead of the conventional partial differential equation, concentration equation, to estimate the degree of mixing.

  • The 1-D finite-element mehtod is applied for designing double-clad otpical fibers with dispersion-compensation capability. design parameters allowing only a $LP_{01}$ single mode are treated and macro-bending loss are taken into consideration. Design parameters are extracted to have the compensation ratio $(L_{SMF}/L_{DCF})$ of 6.2 for core structure with step-index profile, and of 5.2 for core with triangular-index profile.
