In this paper, we study irregular 3D-Arrays with pyramid shapes. Some computation using Maple software and C++ language have been carried out to illustrate some novel and interesting patterns of numbers in these arrays.
Fractal antenna arrays are geometry-based thinned arrays having multiband applications. The major challenge of these arrays is their large number of elements at higher expansion factors. This article presents the thinning of fractal antenna arrays while maintaining an appropriate balance between the side lobe level and beam width by using various quantized fractal distribution functions. A 2D square fractal antenna array and 3DSierpinski gasket antenna array are considered in this article to validate the proposed distribution functions. Nearly one third of the antenna elements are thinned in each successive iteration except in the case of a one-count distribution function. The proposed technique can simplify practical implementation and exhibits better performance for various parameters such as the side lobe level, side lobe angle, and half power beam width than fully populated fractal antenna arrays.
This paper proposes systolic array architectures for compuataion of the 1-D and 2-D discrete wavelet transform (DWT). The proposed systolic array for compuataion of the 1-D DWT consists of L processing element (PE) arrays, where the PE array denotes the systolic array for computation of the one level DWT. The proposed PE array computes only the product terms that are required for further computation and the outputs of low and high frequency filters are computed in alternate clock cycles. Therefore, the proposed architecuter can compute the low and high frequency outputs using a single architecture. The proposed systolic array for computation of the 2-D DWT consists of two systolic array architectures for comutation of the 1-D DWT and memory unit. The required time and hardware cost of the proposed systolic arrays are comparable to those of the conventional architectures. However, the conventional architectures need extra processing units whereas the proposed architectures fo not. The proposed architectures can be applied to subband decomposition by simply changing the filter coefficients.
One-dimensional (1D) piezoelectric nanostructures are attractive candidates for energy generation because of their excellent piezoelectric properties attributed to their high aspect ratios and large surface areas. Vertically grown BaTiO3 nanotube (NT) arrays on conducting substrates are intensively studied because they can be easily synthesized with excellent uniformity and anisotropic orientation. In this study, we demonstrate the synthesis of 1D BaTiO3 NT arrays on a conductive Ti substrate by electrochemical anodization and sequential hydrothermal reactions. Subsequently, we explore the effect of hydrothermal reaction conditions on the piezoelectric energy conversion efficiency of the BaTiO3 NT arrays. Vertically aligned TiO2 NT arrays, which act as the initial template, are converted into BaTiO3 NT arrays using hydrothermal reaction with various concentrations of the Ba source and reaction times. To validate the electrical output performance of the BaTiO3 NT arrays, we measure the electricity generated from each NT array packaged with a conductive metal foil and epoxy under mechanical pushings. The generated output voltage signals from the BaTiO3 NT arrays increase with increasing concentration of the Ba source and reaction time. These results provide a new strategy for fabricating advanced 1D piezoelectric nanostructures by demonstrating the correlation between hydrothermal reaction conditions and piezoelectric output performance.
Two dimensional (2D) arrays of noble metal nanoparticles are widely used in the sensing of nanoscale biological and chemical events. Research in this area has sparked considerable interest in many fields owing to the novel optical properties, e.g., the localized surface plasmon resonance, of these metallic nanoarrays. In this paper, we report successes in fabricating 2D arrays of gold nano-islands using nanosphere lithography. The reproducibility and the effectiveness of the nano-patterning method are tested by means of spin coating and capillary force deposition. We found that the capillary force deposition method was more effective for nanospheres with diameters greater than 600 nm, whereas the spin coating method works better for nanospheres with diameters less than 600 nm. The optimal deposition parameters for both methods were reported, showing about 80% reproducibility. In addition, we characterize gold nano-island arrays both geometrically with AFM as well as optically with UV-VIS spectrometry. The AFM images revealed that the obtained nano-arrays formed a hexagonal pattern of truncated tetrahedron nano-islands. The experimental and theoretical values of the geometric parameters were compared. The 2D gold nano-arrays showed strong LSPR in the absorption spectra. As the nano-islands increased in size, the LSPR absorption bands became red-shifted. Linear dependence of the plasmon absorption maximum on the size of the gold nano-islands was identified through the increment in the plasmon absorption maximum rate for a one nanometer increase in the characteristic length of the nano-islands. We found that the 2D gold nano-arrays showed nearly seven-fold higher sensitivity of the absorption spectrum to the size of the nano-islands as compared to colloidal gold nano-particles.
Wu et al. (1992) constructed some general classes of tight asymmetric orthogonal arrays of strength 2 using the method of grouping. Rains et al. (2002) obtained asymmetric orthogonal arrays of strength 2 using the concept of mixed spread in finite projective geometry. In this paper, we obtain some new tight asymmetric orthogonal arrays of strength 2 using the concept of mixed partition in finite projective geometry.
We look at Toeplitz arrays on ${\mathbb{Z}}^d$ and study a characterizing property for pure discrete spectrum in terms of the periodic structures of the Toeplitz arrays.
Although vertically aligned one-dimensional (1D) structure has been considered as efficient forms for photoelectrode, development of efficient 1D nanostructured photocathode are still required. In this sense, we recently demonstrated a simple fabrication route for CuInS2 (CIS) nanorod arrays from aqueous solution by template-assisted growth-and-transfer method and their feasibility as a photoelectrode for water splitting. In this study, we further evaluated the photoelectrochemical properties surface-modified CIS nanorod arrays. Surface modification with CdS and ZnS was performed by successive ion layer adsorption and reaction (SILAR) method, which is well known as suitable technique for conformal coating throughout nanoporous structure. With surface modification of CdS and ZnS, both photoelectrochemical performance and stability of CuInS2 nanorod arrays were improved by shifting of the flat-band potential, which was analyzed both onset potential and Mott-schottky plot.
For the rational design and facile fabrication of novel nanostructures, we present a new approach to generating arrays of three-dimensionally tunable nanostructures by exploiting light-matter interaction. To create controlled three-dimensional (3D) nanostructures, we utilize the 3D spatial distribution of light, induced by the light-matter interaction, within the matter to be patterned. As a systematic approach, we establish 3D modeling that integrates the physical and chemical effects of the photolithographic process. Based on a comprehensive analysis of structural formation process and nanoscale features through this modeling, we are able to realize three-dimensionally tunable nanostructures using facile photolithographic process. Here we first demonstrate the arrays of three-dimensionally controlled, stacked nanostructures with nanoscale, tunable layers. We expect that the promising strategy would open new opportunities to produce the arrays of tunable 3D nanostructures using more accessible and facile fabrication process for various biomedical applications ranging from biosensors to drug delivery devices.
We investigate the performance of multi-body wave energy converters (WECs). This investigation considers multiple scattering of water waves by the buoys of a WEC under the generalized mode approach. Predominantly, the effect of a WEC's configuration on its energy extraction is studied in this research. First, single-row terminator and single-column attenuator arrays of vertical cylinders have been studied. The performance of these attenuator arrays shows that the wall effect induced by the periodic buoys influences the wave propagation and energy extraction in these WECs. Further studies show that a single-row terminator array of vertical cylinders performs better than the corresponding single-column attenuator array. Subsequently, multi-row terminator arrays of vertical cylinders are investigated by conducting a parametric study. This parametric study shows that the hydrodynamic property of three resonance phenomena makes energy extraction efficiency drop down, and the magnitude of energy extracted oscillates between the resonance points in these WECs. Finally, a 4×8 terminator array of vertical cylinders is studied to determine the effect of various dx (x-directional distance between adjacent rows) within this WEC on its performance. In particular, this study enforces at least two equal dx values within the 4×8 terminator array of vertical cylinders. It shows that a small value of this dx leads to better energy extraction efficiency in some of these various dx arrays than that of a corresponding regular array with the same dx.
