In order to use for metabolic studies of tranylcypromine (TCP), TCP-phenyl-$d_{5}$ was synthesized via the intermediates, 3-benzoylpropionic acid-$d_{5}$ and trans-2-phenylcyclopropanecarboxylic acid-$d_{5}$ -TCP(0.22 mmole/kg) and its deuterated analog were administered s. c. to the rats and GC/MS analyses of the urines led to the detection of N-acetyltranylcypromine (ATCP) and glucuronide conjugate of phenyl-hydroxylated ATCP. MAO activities in rat brain were measured using serotonin as the substrate. In vitro $IC_{50}$ of ATCP was determined to be $10^{-3}M$. The inhibitions by ATCP were not dependent on the preincubation time and were reversed by washing sedimented mitochondrial pellets after the preincubation. In vivo MAO inhibitions at various times of 0.5, 1.5, 3, 6, 12, and 23 hr after the administration of 0.4 mmole/kg (i. p. ) of ATCP were found to be 0.13, 73, 90, 89, and 74 %, respectively. Similarly, the inhibition percents by 0.015 mmole/kg (i. p. ) of TCP were 94, 99, 95, 91, 71 and 49%. The results strongly suggest that deacetylated product of ATCP may account for its in vivo MAO inhibition. The relationship between the metabolism via phenyl-hydroxylation and the in vivo potency of TCP was examined by QSAR study and it was found that groupings discriminating between the compounds with p-substituents and those without them only ensure high correlations, suggesting that ring-hydroxylation which occurs at the para position in most of the compounds is a determining factor to the potency of TCP.

Approximately 250 marine oil spill accidents have occurred in Korea, with profound impact on local communities and the environment. The restoration process necessitates significant resources and costs to return affected areas to their pre-accident state. In accordance with the polluter pays principle, compensation is demanded from polluter, as stipulated in both international conventions and national laws. Consequently, investigations are conducted to determine civil and criminal liability. As the importance of investigation actors in oil spill accidents increases, standards such as CEN 15522-2 and ASTM D 3248 are employed to determine the similarity between the spilled oil and the oil of the suspected ship. Among these standards, CEN 15522-2, the most actively used European standard, underwent its third revision and is now known as EN 15522-2, as of 2023. This study used EN 15522-2 to analyze samples from marine oil spill accidents that occurred in Korea. The results indicated that, considering the characteristics of domestic spills where light fuel oil spills account for more than 40%, the application of EN 15522-2, which includes low-boiling point substances such as Adamantanes, was confirmed to be highly effective.
Previous screening of novel antibacterial agents revealed that some bacterial isolates exhibited antibiotic activity against both gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria and that they showed antibacterial activity, even against methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). Among these isolates, one bacterial strain, BCNU 1204, was identified as Pseudomonas aeruginosa using phenetic and phylogenetic analysis, based on 16S ribosomal RNA gene sequences. The maximum productivities of antimicrobial substances of BCNU 1204 were obtained after being cultured at $35^{\circ}C$ and pH 7.0 for 4 d in King's medium B (KMB). Dichloromethane (DCM) and ethylacetate (EA) extracts of P. aeruginosa BCNU 1204 exhibited strong antimicrobial activity, particularly against gram-positive bacteria. The EA extracts exhibited broad-spectrum activity against antibiotic resistant strains. Fraction 5-2, was obtained by recycling preparative liquid chromatography (LC) and preparative thin-layer chromatography (TLC) and was identified as phenazine-1-carboxylic acid belonging to phenazines using gas chromatography and mass spectrometry (GC/MS). Its minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) values were $25{\mu}g/ml$, $50{\mu}g/ml$, ${\geq}25{\mu}g/ml$, and ${\geq}50{\mu}g/ml$ for MRSA CCARM 3089, 3090, 3091, and 3095 strains, respectively. P. aeruginosa BCNU 1204 may be a potential resource for the development of anti-MRSA antibiotics. Additional research is required to identify the active substance from P. aeruginosa BCNU 1204.
Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) in sediments, which can cause human health problems, have been monitored in Korea since 2014. Measured VOC concentrations can be affected by matrix type and the volatility of target substances. In this study, (1) VOCs volatility and the influence of matrix interference were confirmed, and (2) internal standards (IS) method was applied to improve analytical method. For these purposes, method detection limit (MDL), calibration linearity, precision and accuracy of VOCs were compared in various matrices using the IS. Some of VOCs in sediments showed different peak areas and reduced rates compared to water matrix. It was suggested that adsorption properties of sediments hindered the migration to vapor during heat pretreatment in headspace method. A calibration curve was created in clean sand. Recovery rates for the calibration curve method and IS applying method were 64.1~83.1% and 99.1~119.3%, respectively. Relative standard deviations ranged from 11.1% to 21.6% for the calibration curve method and those for IS ranged 4.7% to 13.7%. In case of real sediment, calibration curve and 1,2-Dichlorobenzene-d4 (ODCB) among IS were not suitable. The average recovery rate of Fluorobenzene (FBZ) increased by 56.4% and Relative Standard Deviation (RSD) by 4.7%. However, the recovery rate was increased in the samples with large values of igniting intensity. This study confirmed that influence of the matrix of VOCs in sediment, and addition of IS materials improved precision and accuracy. Although IS corrects volatilization and adsorption, it is recommended that more than two types of IS should be added rather than single.

This study investigates the change of chemical components, antioxidant and antimutagenic activity in Glycyrrhiza uralensis Fischer stems and leaves (GU) by the various processing methods, as follows: fresh (GU-1), dried under the shade (GU-2), blanched (GU-3), roasted 3 times (GU-4), roasted 4 times (GU-5). The components have been identified and quantified through the use of gas chromatograph-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). At results, cis-1,3-dimethyl-2-methylenecyclohexaneat at 19.7 min and n-hexadecanoic acid at 21.5 min were detected in five kinds of extract. 3-O-Methyl-D-fructose at 17.8 min was observed in four extracts except in GU-1 and aminopyrazine at 19.8min was observed in four extracts except in GU-4. The total phenolics contents was high in GU-4(3.38 g/100 g). ABTS radical scavenging was high in GU-5($EC_{50}$, 0.57 ug) and DPPH radical scavenging was high in GU-4($EC_{50}$, 2.66 ug). The extracts of GU-3, GU-4, and GU-2 were most potent in anti-mutagenicity activity against 1-NP, Trip-P-1, and Trip-P-2, respectively. GU-3 and GU-4 also showed most potent effect of anti-mutagenicity on 2-AA and AFB1, respectively.
Solvent-extracted volatile components from dry powder prepared from Citrus unshiu products such as immature Citrus unshiu (PCU), mature Citrus unshiu (MCU), Citrus unshiu peel (CUP), and citrus juice processing wastes (CJPW), were examined. Also, solvent-extracted volatile components from mushroom mycelia of Pycnoporus coccineus (PC), Lentinus edodes (LE), Pleurotus eryngii (PE), Hericium coralloides (HC), Panellus serotinus (PS), and Ganoderma lucidum(GL), all cultivated using citrus pulp solid media, were assayed. Twenty-nine volatile components were identified in dry powder prepared Citrus unshiu and 18 volatile components were characterized from mushroom mycelia. Of these, ${\beta}-elemene$, germacrene-D, and ${\delta}-cadinene$, were derived from CJPW, but caryophyllene, hexadecanoic acid, decanoic acid, and tetradecanoic acid were synthesized by mushroom mycelia.
Galactomyces geotrichum MTCC 1360 degraded the Scarlet RR(100 mg/l) dye within 18 h, under shaking conditions(150 rpm) in malt yeast medium. The optimum pH and the temperature for decolorization were pH 12 and $50^{\circ}C$, respectively. Enzymatic studies revealed an induction of the enzymes, including flavin reductase during the initial stage and lignin peroxidase after complete decolorization of the dye. Decolorization of the dye was induced by the addition of $CaCO_3$ to the medium. EDTA had an inhibitory effect on the dye decolorization along with the laccase activity. The metabolites formed after complete decolorization were analyzed by UV-VIS, HPLC, and FTIR. The GC/MS identification of 3 H quinazolin-4-one, 2-ethylamino-acetamide, 1-chloro-4-nitro-benzene, N-(4-chloro-phenyl)-hydroxylamine, and 4-chloro-pheny-lamine as the final metabolites corroborated with the degradation of Scarlet RR. The phytotoxicity study revealed the nontoxic nature of the final metabolites. A possible degradation pathway is suggested to understand the mechanism used by G. geotrichum and thereby aiding development of technologies for the application of this organism to the cleaning-up of aquatic and terrestrial environments.

Objectives : This study was intended to reveal the chemical profiles of aerial(leaf, stem) and underground(rhizome, radix) parts of wild ginseng, and to investigate their anti-aging effects on human skin cells. Methods : Wild ginseng, estimated for over 20 years, was divided into the aerial and underground parts. Total phenolic contents of each extracts were measured using a Folin-ciocalteu method. The contents of 18 amino acids, 8 minerals and 27 ginsenosides were determined by GC-FID, ICP-MS and LC-MS, respectively. The anti-aging effects, including the radical scavenging activity, the activation of mitochondrial function on human fibroblasts, and the proliferation activity on human keratinocyte progenitor cells, for the whole plant and underground part of wild ginseng were evaluated. Results : The total phenolic acids, amino acids, and minerals in the aerial part were more than twice as high as in the underground part. Compared to the cultivated ginseng root, there were various types of ginsenosides in both parts of wild ginseng, and the total amount was more than twice as high. In particular, the aerial part significantly contained ginsenoside F1, F2, C-Mc1, and C-O, and the distinctive patterns that distinguish each parts of wild ginseng from the cultivated ginseng root were derived. The whole plant and underground part of wild ginseng exhibited significant antioxidant effect(14.3-45.6%), activation of mitochondrial membrane potential(105.5-120.1%), and cell proliferation(112.1-125.4%). Conclusions : The entire plant and underground part of wild ginseng are high value-added plants and have beneficial effects on skin anti-aging properties through its abundant metabolites.
This study was performed to survey the school supplies such as pencil, eraser, notebook and color paper. Twenty-two kinds of samples were collected near the school zone, and eight kinds of phthalate which is one of the environmental hazard factors analyzed to estimate the contents characteristics of products. As the results of these research, three kinds of phthalates (BBP, DNOP and DIDP) were not detected in the selected samples. In the A group, DEHP and DINP were detected in the rage of 22%~28%, and DINP was selected 28%, 24% and 28% in the A-1, A-3 and A-4 samples, respectively. But the selected samples in the B group were detected less than 1,000 ppm as regulated level. Also, The DBP was detected 1% in the C-2 sample, and DEHP was detected 0.3% in the C-1 and C-6 samples. The DEHA was detected 0.3% in the D-3 sample. In this study, the DINP was mainly detected the eraser, therefore this kind of phthalate can be exposed through dermal exposure.

The purpose of this study was to analyse the volatile components of Thymus magnus Nakai extracted by different extraction methods and reproduce scent close to original plant based on the results. For this purpose, the essential oil of T. magnus was extracted by supercritical fluid extraction (SFE), water and steam distillation (WSD) and simultaneous steam distillation and extraction (SDE) methods. The compositions of the essential oil were analyzed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). Consequently, linalool (0.1%) and trans-sabinene hydrate (0.9%) contents in the essential oil extracted by SFE method of $40^{\circ}C$ - 400 bar condition were relatively higher than compositions of the essential oil extracted by different conditions. The contents of borneol (3.82%), terpinen-4-ol (0.3%) and caryophyllene oxide (2.2%) were relatively higher at $50^{\circ}C$ - 400 bar and the contents of ${\beta}$-bisabolene (5.88%), 1-octen-3-ol (0.31%), caryophyllene (2.91%), p-cymene (2.04%) and ${\gamma}$-terpinene (0.52%) were extracted relatively higher at $50^{\circ}C$ - 300 bar. The compositions of the essential oil extracted by SFE method of $50^{\circ}C$ - 200 bar condition contained relatively higher contents of thymol (77.63%) and carvacrol (5.65%). The contents of ${\alpha}$-bisabolol (0.17%), caryophyllene (6.46%), cis-${\alpha}$-bisabolene (1.52%) and ${\beta}$-bisabolene (20.65%) in the essential oil extracted by WSD method were relatively higher than compositions of the essential oil extracted by SFE method, and by SDE method we couldn't obtained essential oil. The results of this study could be utilized to reproduce scent close to original scent of T. magnus.
