Despite of the laminar-turbulent transition region co-exist with fully turbulence region around the leading edge of an airfoil, still lots of researchers apply to fully turbulence models to predict aerodynamic characteristics. It is well known that fully turbulent model such as standard k-model couldn't predict the complex stall and the separation behavior on an airfoil accurately, it usually leads to over prediction of the aerodynamic characteristics such as lift and drag forces. So, we apply correlation based transition model to predict aerodynamic performance of the NREL (National Renewable Energy Laboratory) Phase IV wind turbine. And also, compare the computed results from transition model with experimental measurement and fully turbulence results. Results are presented for a range of wind speed, for a NREL Phase IV wind turbine rotor. Low speed shaft torque, power, root bending moment, aerodynamic coefficients of 2D airfoil and several flow field figures results included in this study. As a result, the low speed shaft torque predicted by transitional turbulence model is very good agree with the experimental measurement in whole operating conditions but fully turbulent model(${\kappa}-\;{\varepsilon}$) over predict the shaft torque after 7m/s. Root bending moment is also good agreement between the prediction and experiments for most of the operating conditions, especially with the transition model.
Numerical optimization method of long endurance airfoil has been performed with a RSM(Response Surface Method) for smart UAV wing design. For the base line airfoil, NACA 64621 airfoil was selected and optimized to satisfy long endurance condition for smart UAV Aerodynamic coefficients required for RSM are obtained by using 2-D Navier-Stokes solver with Spalart-Allmaras turbulence model. The optimized airfoil showed increased maximum lift and endurance factors together with reasonable thickness ratio.
A numerical investigation was performed to determine the effect of airfoil thickness on the optimum Gurney flap height using NACA 00XX series airfoils. Seven airfoils which have 3% chord thickness difference were used. These were NACA 0006, 0009, 0012, 0015, 0018, 0021, and 0024. A Navier-Stokes code, FLUENT, was used to calculate the flow field about airfoil. The fully turbulent results were obtained using the standard $k-{\varepsilon}$ two-equation turbulence model. To provide a check case fur our computational method, numerical studies for NACA 4412 airfoil were made and compared with already existing experimental data for this airfoil by Wadcock. For every NACA 00XX airfoil, Gurney flap heights ranging from 0.5% to 2.0% chord were changed by 0.5% chord interval and their effects were studied. With the numerical solutions, the relationship between $(L/D)_{max}$ and airfoil thickness as a function of flap height and the relationship between $(L/D)_{max}$ and flap height as a function of airfoil thickness were investigated. The same relationship for $(C_l)_{max}$ also were shown. From these results, the optimum flap size for each airfoil thickness can be determined and vice versa.
During landing approach, an airplane could experience dynamic unstable motion by the combination of a gust and elevator control to cancel the disturbances. This situation is dangerous and could lead to a loss of an airplane. In this paper, numerical analysis was used to study the effect of pitch oscillating 2-D high lift devices in a landing condition. Experimental data on a pitching naca0012 airfoil was used for code validation. Dynamic characteristics of an airfoil, single slotted flap for mid-class passenger aircraft were analyzed. Unsteady Navier-Stokes analysis was performed with Spalart-Allmaras turbulence model for separation dominant low speed flow. As a result, flow hysteresis of a flapped airfoil was more complex than that of an oscillating airfoil. So, dynamic analysis of a flap in a landing condition is very important for operational safety.
A numerical investigation was performed to determine the effect of airfoil on the optimum flap height using NACA 00XX and 44XX airfoils. The six flaps which have 0.5% chord height difference were selected. A Navier-Stokes code, FLUENT, was used to calculate the flow field of the airfoil. The code was first tested as a benchmark by modelling flow around a NACA 4412 airfoil. Predictions of local pressure coefficients are found to be in good agreement with the result of the experimental result. For every NACA 00XX and 44XX airfoil, flap heights ranging from 0.0% to 2.5% chord were changed by 0.5% chord interval and their effects were also studied. Representative results from each case are presented graphically and discussed. It is concluded that this initial approach gives an idea for the future development of the wind turbine optimum design.
The paper presents the surface-modified NACA 2412 airfoil performance with variable cavity characteristics such as size, shape and orientation, by numerically investigated with the pre-validation study. The study attempts to improve the airfoil aerodynamic performance at 30 m/s with a variable angle of attack (AOA) ranging from 0° to 20° under Reynolds number (Re) 4.4×105. Through passive surface control techniques, a boundary layer control strategy has been enhanced to improve flow performance. An intense background survey has been carried out over the modifier orientation, shape, and numbers to differentiate the sub-critical and post-critical flow regimes. The wall-bounded flows along with its governing equations are investigated using Reynolds Average Navier Strokes (RANS) solver coupled with one-equational transport Spalart Allmaras model. It was observed that the aerodynamic efficiency of cavity airfoil had been improved by enhancing maximum lift to drag ratio ((l/d) max) with delayed flow separation by keeping the flow attached beyond 0.25C even at a higher angle of attack. Detailed investigation on the cavity distribution pattern reveals that cavity depth and width are essential in degrading the early flow separation characteristics. In this study, overall general performance comparison, all the cavity airfoil models have delayed stalling compared to the original airfoil.

Optimization with metamodel is one of numerical optimization methods. Response surface method is performed for making metamodel. The Hcks-Henne function is used for designing 2D shape of the airfoil and spring analogy is used to change the grid according to the change in shape of the airfoil. Aerodynamic coefficient required for response surface method are obtained by using Navier-Stokes solver with $\kappa-\omega$ shear stress transport turbulence model. For the baseline airfoils, OA 312, OA 309, and OA 407 airfoils select and optimize to improve aerodynamic performance.
Immersed boundary lattice Boltzmann method has been applied to analyze the characteristics of the self-propelled fish motion swimming robot. The airfoil NACA0012 with caudal fin stroke model was considered to examine the characteristics. The foil in steady forward motion and a combination of steady-state harmonic deformation produces thrust through the formation of a flow downstream from the trailing edge. The harmonic motion of the foil causes unsteady shedding of vorticity from the trailing edge, while forming the vortices at the leading edge as well. The resultant thrust is developed by the pressure difference formed on the upper and lower surface of the airfoil. and the time averaged thrust coefficient increases as Re increase in the region of $Re{\leqq}700$. The suggested numerical method is suitable to develop the fish-motion model to control the swimming robot, however It would need to extend in 3D analysis to examine the higher Re and to determine the more detail mechanism of thrust production.
As a computer has been continuously progressed to reduce R&D time and cost, the study of the flow physics has been significantly relied on the numerical method. Recently, Large Eddy Simulation(LES) has been widely used in CFD community to accurately capture the turbulent flows. The LES code requires high accuracy in time, as well as in space. Also, it should have strong robustness to ensure the convergence in various complicated flows. The objective of the present work is to develop a base code for LES simulation, having 2$^{nd}$ order accuracy in time and 4$^{th}$ order accuracy in space. To achieve the present objective, the four-step fractional step method was enhanced by adopting compact Pade'scheme. The standard Smagorinsky model was implemented for the first stage of the present code development. The flows over a cylinder and an airfoil were successfully simulated. and an airfoil were successfully simulated.
