  • This study examined a technique for cooling root zone aimed at lowering substrate temperature for sweet pepper (Capsicum annum L. 'Orange glory') cultivation in coir substrate hydroponics during hot season, from the $16^{th}$ of July to $15^{th}$ of October in 2012. The root zone cooling technique was applied by using an air duct (${\varnothing}12$ cm, hole size 0.1 mm) to blow cool air between two slabs during night (5p.m. to 3a.m.). Between the $23^{rd}$ of July and $31^{st}$ of August (hot temperature period), average daily substrate temperature was $24.7^{\circ}C$ under the root zone cooling, whereas it was $28.2^{\circ}C$ under condition of no cooling (control). In sunny day (600~700 W $m^{-2}{\cdot}s^{-1}$), average substrate temperatures during the day (6a.m. to 8p.m.) and night (8p.m. to 6a.m.) were lower about $1.7^{\circ}C$ and $3.3^{\circ}C$, respectively, under the cooling treatment, compared to that of control. The degree of temperature reduction in the substrate was averagely $0.5^{\circ}C$ per hour under the cooling treatment during 6p.m. to 8p.m.; however, there was no decrease in the temperature under the control. The temperature difference between the cooling and control treatments was $1.3^{\circ}C$ and $0.6^{\circ}C$ in the upper and lower part of the slab, respectively. During the hot temperature period, about 32.5% reduction in the substrate temperature was observed under the cooling treatment, compared to the control. Photosynthesis, transpiration rate, and leaf water potential of plants grown under the cooling treatment were significantly higher than those under the control. The first flowering date in the cooling was faster about 4 days than in the control. Also, the number of fruits was significantly higher than that in the control. No differences in plant height, stem thickness, number of internode, and leaf width were found between the plants grown under the cooling and control, except for the leaf length with a shorter length under the cooling treatment. However, root zone cooling influenced negligibly on eliminating delay in fruiting caused by excessively higher air temperature (> $28^{\circ}C$), although the substrate temperature was reduced by $3^{\circ}C$ to $5.6^{\circ}C$. These results suggest that the technique of lowering substrate temperature by using air-duct blow needs to be incorporated into the lowering growing temperature system for growth and fruit set of health paprika.

  • Forty-eight individually fed Angus steers (body weight $220kg{\pm}9.1$) were utilized to investigate the effects of copper (Cu) source and concentration on lipid metabolism and carcass quality. Steers were stratified by body weight and initial liver Cu concentration and randomly assigned to one of five groups. Groups were then randomly assigned to treatments. Treatments consisted of: 1) control (no supplemental Cu); 2) 10 mg Cu/kg DM from $CuSO_4$; 3) 10 mg Cu/kg DM from a Cu amino acid complex (Availa Cu) 4) 20 mg Cu/kg DM from $CuSO_4$; and 5) 20 mg Cu/kg DM from Availa Cu. Steers were fed a corn-alfalfa-based growing diet for 56 d. Steers were then switched to a high concentrate finishing diet for 145 d. On day 74 of the finishing phase subcutaneous adipose tissue biopsies were obtained from three steers/treatment to determine basal and stimulated lipolytic rates in vitro. Steers were then slaughtered after receiving the finishing diet for 145 d. Control steers tended (p<0.12) to have lower ceruloplasmin (Cp) activity than Cu supplemented steers. Steers receiving 20 mg Cu/kg DM from Availa Cu had higher (p<0.03) Cp activity than steers receiving 20 mg Cu/kg DM from $CuSO_4$. Plasma non-esterified fatty acids were similar across treatments. Steers receiving 10 mg Cu/kg DM from Availa Cu had higher (p<0.02) total plasma cholesterol concentrations relative to steers receiving 10 mg Cu/kg DM from $CuSO_4$. Steers receiving 20 mg Cu/kg DM from Availa Cu had lower (p<0.03) plasma triglyceride concentrations than steers supplemented with 20 mg Cu/kg DM from $CuSO_4$. Fatty acid profile of longissimus muscle was similar across treatments. Backfat depth tended (p<0.18) to be lower in Cu supplemented steers relative to controls. Steers supplemented with 20 mg Cu/kg DM from Availa Cu had heavier (p<0.03) hot carcass weights and a greater (p<0.02) dressing percentage than steers supplemented with 20 mg Cu/kg DM from $CuSO_4$. Furthermore, in vitro basal (p<0.06) and epinephrine stimulated (p<0.04) lipolytic rates of subcutaneous adipose tissue were higher in Cu supplemented steers relative to controls. The results of this study suggest that Cu supplementation has minimal effects on blood and lean tissue lipid profile. However, it appears that Cu may play a role in lipid metabolism in subcutaneous adipose tissue.

  • Respiratory characteristics and quality of Fuji apple were investigated at critical conditions for dipping treatment in mild hot water ($40-65^^{\circ}C$) to extend freshness. Dipping treatment conditions under which no damages occurred in peel and flesh of apples stored at $0^{\circ}C$ for 1 month after treatment were: 180 min at $40^{\circ}C$, 60 min at $45^{\circ}C$, 45 min at $50^{\circ}C$, 3 min at $55^{\circ}C$, 1 min at $60^{\circ}C$, and 20 sec at $65^{\circ}C$. Internal carbon dioxide concentrations of apples drastically increased immediately after treatments at 40, 45, and $50^{\circ}C$, then decreased to normal level 1 day after treatment at $0^{\circ}C$. Although internal oxygen concentration of apples showed reversed trend to internal carbon dioxide, no significant differences were observed in concentrations of carbon dioxide and oxygen during storage after treatment of apples at 55, 60, and $65^{\circ}C$. Concentration of internal ethylene of apples treated at 40, 45, and $50^{\circ}C$ increased, similarly to that of carbon dioxide upon heat treatment, then, during storage, decreased to below levels of control and apples treated at 55, 60, and $65^{\circ}C$. Firmness of apples treated at 45 and $50^{\circ}C$ were 6.42 and 10.53% higher than that of control at $0^{\circ}C$ after 7 days after treatment.

  • This study aimed to determine the effects of root zone cooling using air duct on air temperature distribution and root zone and leaf temperatures of sweet pepper (Capsicum annum L. 'Veyron') grown on coir substrate hydroponic system in a greenhouse. When the air duct was laid at the passage adjacent the slab, the direction of air blowing was upstream at $45^{\circ}$. The cooling temperature was set at $20^{\circ}C$ for day and $18^{\circ}C$ for night. For cooing timing treatments, the cooling air was applied at all day (All-day), only night time (5 p.m. to 1 a.m.; Night), or no cooling (Control). The air temperature inside the greenhouse at a height of 40 and 80cm above the floor, and substrate and leaf temperatures, fruit characteristics, and fruit ratio were measured. Under the All-day treatment, the air temperature was decreased about $4.4{\sim}5.1^{\circ}C$ at the height of 40cm and $2.1{\sim}3.1^{\circ}C$ at the height of 80cm. Under the Night treatment, the air temperature was decreased about $3.4{\sim}3.8^{\circ}C$ at the height of 40cm and $2.2{\sim}2.7^{\circ}C$ at the height of 80cm. The daily average temperature in the substrate was in the order of the Control ($27.7^{\circ}C$) > Night ($24.1^{\circ}C$) > All-day ($22.8^{\circ}C$) treatment. Cooling the passage with either upstream blowing at $45^{\circ}$ or horizontal blowing at $180^{\circ}$ was effective in lowering the air temperature at a height of 50cm; however, no difference at a height of 100cm. Cooling the passage with perpendicular direction at $90^{\circ}$ was effective in lowering the air temperature at the height between 100 and 200cm above the floor; however, no effect on the temperature at the height of 50cm. A greater decrease in leaf temperature was found at 7 p.m. than that at 9. a.m. under both All-day and Night treatments. Fresh weight partitioning of fruit was in the order of the All-day (48.6%) > Night (45.6%) > Control (24.4%) treatment. A higher fruit production was observed under the All-day treatment, in which the accumulated average temperature was the lowest, and it may have been led to a higher proportion of photosynthate distributed to fruit than other treatments.

  • ABSTRACT: In order to find physiologically active components from higher fungi, hot-water soluble components were extracted from the basidiocarps of Ganoderma lucidum. The extract was purified and separated by DEAE cellulose ion exchange chromatography and Sepharose CL-4B gel filtration method. The separated fractions were designated CR, IN, IA, GL and GH. Fraction GL showed the highest antitumor activity among the fractions and its molecular weight was found to be 47 KD. The tumor inhibition ratio of Fr. GL was 81 % at the dose of peritoneal administration of 20 mg/kg/day for 10 days in mice. Chemical analysis of this fraction showed 82% polysaccharide, 8% protein and 0.9% hexosamine. The polysaccharide moiety consisted of 63% glucose, 27% galactose, 7% mannose and 3% fucose. Fraction IN was found to increase the amount of superoxide anion in activated macrophages to 1.6-fold and the number of plaques in hemolytic plaque assay to 6-fold, respectively. These results indicate that the antitumor activity was exerted through immunopotentiation, but not through direct cytotoxicity against the tumor.

  • With regard to the fact that temperature of human body remains almost constant at $37^{\circ}C$, changes by circadian variation, this study intended to investigate the effect of circadian rhythm on physiological responses of human body according to body fat rate. Fifteen healthy adult women were recruited for this study and were measured body fat as a method of bio impedance. We organized subjects into three groups ; low body fat group(group L-less than 20% of body fat), medium body fat group(group M-20%~30% of body fat) and high body fat group(group H-more than 30% of body fat). The experiment was carried out in a climate chamber of $32^{\circ}C$, 60% RH with the repeat of 'Exercise' and 'Rest' period. Subjects participated in two experiments, one is morning experiment(called 'AM'), the other is afternoon experiment (called 'PM'). The results of this study are as follows ; As to the variation of rectal temperature, group L and M had a significant difference in the time of the day between AM and PM, but group H had almost the same rectal temperature in the two kinds of experimental time. The reason why group H had a smaller difference in the circadian rhythm of rectal temperature in this study is estimated at the Budd et al.(1991)'s results that body fat had effects on reduction in thermogenesis, radiation, mean skin temperature, and increase in insulation of the tissues. Group M had the highest mean skin temperature in the 'PM'. All the 3 groups didn't have stable values in 'AM'. But it showed more stable in 'PM' than 'AM'. Sweat rate was the highest in group H in both 'AM' and 'PM'. Group M had larger sweat rate in 'PM' than 'AM'. but in group L and H, sweat rate was almost the same in two kinds of time of the day. This result suggests that who have more or less body fat have larger difference in sweat rate between morning and afternoon than who have normal body fat.

  • In this study, a waste heat recovery system was devised and the performances of components incorporated to recover the heat generated during the processing of aerobic liquid-composting in a livestock manure treatment facility were analyzed. In addition, the availability of recovered heat was confirmed. The heat generated by liquid fermentation in the livestock manure treatment facility was also checked. Experimental temperatures were set at 35, 40, and 45 ℃ based on considerations of the uniformity of aerobic liquid-composting fermentation tank temperature and its operating range (34.5 ~ 43.9 ℃). Recovered heat energies from the combined heat exchanger, which consisted of PE and STS pipes, were 53.5, 65.6, 74.4 MJ/h, The heat pump of capacity 5 RT was heated at 95.6, 96.1, 98.9 MJ/h and the heating COPs of the pump were 4.53, 4.62, and 4.65, respectively. The maximum hot water production capacity of the heat exchanger assuming a fermentation tank temperature of 45 ℃ confirmed an energy supply of 56 360 kcal/day. The heating capacity of the FCU linked to the heat storage tank was 20.8 MJ/h, and the energy utilization efficiency was 96.1%. When livestock manure was dried using the FCU, it was confirmed that the initial function rate was reduced by 50.5 to 45.8 % after drying.

  • The effects of spot heating for growing the strawberry cultivated in a plastic greenhouse during the winter that were estimated in Nonsan strawberry experiment station located in Chungnam. The temperature of water for heating was controlled by a electric hot water boiler and kept at the range of $22{\sim}24^{\circ}C$. Heating pipes were set up in root zone for root zone heating and very close to crown for crown heating. Spot heating effects were estimated by applying spot heating system in three test factors of heating root zone, crown only and crown plus root zone. The material for crown heating pipe was white low density polyethylene and the nominal diameter of that pipe was 16 mm. The material for root zone heating pipe was flexible stainless steel and the nominal diameter of that pipe was 15A. The flow rate of heating water circulation was 480 L/h and water circulation lasted for all day long. Temperatures, harvest yield by test beds were surveyed from Nov. 10, 2013 to Apr. 29, 2014. The temperature of crown spot for crown heating bed was at the range of $13.0{\sim}17.0^{\circ}C$ during the night and that of crown spot in control bed was at the range of $8.0{\sim}14.0^{\circ}C$. Also, the temperature of root zone for root zone heating bed was at the range of $18{\sim}21.0^{\circ}C$ and that of root zone in control bed was at the range of $13.0{\sim}15.0^{\circ}C$. The cumulative yield growth rate in earlier harvest period (from Dec. 20 to Mar. 15) of crown heating bed was 43% compared with that of control bed and the cumulative yield of crown plus root zone heating bed was 39 % and that of root zone heating bed was 39 %.

  • The study was conducted to select optimal materials for promoting germination rate, high sprouting vigor by priming treatment using PEG 6000 (water potential -0.5 to 2.0 Mpa) and Azolla extracts (0.1, 1.0, and 10.0%) extracted by ethanol, distilled, and/or hot water in colored rice cultivars. Each rice seed (three black rice cultivars and two red rice cultivars) was soaked 24 and 48 hr including untreated control. In black rice, Joseongheugchal rice cultivar, azolla ethanol extract (0.1%) induced highest germination rate, germination speed was taken to 5 days in distilled water and to 3days in Azolla extracts extracted hot water. Otherwise, degree of bacterial inhibition (number of colony, $10^3cfu$) in dry seed, water soaking for 24hr, soaking with fungicide for 24hr and 48hr, soaking with fungicide and aeration for 24hr and 48 hr was 22, 500, 95, and 0.46, respectively. In order to minimize fungal inhibition, a method can be chosen to combination of soaking fungicide and aeration for 48 hr. In seed priming treatments using growth pouch, seed soaking with fungicide did not affect change of germination percentage and germination speed, it delayed only 2 or 4day in the Joseongheugchal rice cultivar. It differs from rice cultivars and priming materials, Azolla extract(0.1 to 1%) promotes seed germination percentage in the Ilpum, Hongjinju, and Joseonghuegchal, in addition, germination in Jeogjinju cultivar was only promoted by PEG solution(10 to 20%), otherwise, it showed much lower or inhibited on the germination in Heugjinju and Sinmyungheugchal rice cultivars. In a paddy field trial, seedling establishment rate by applying PEG6000 and azolla extract did not show significantly statistical difference. When it compared with untreated control, seedling establishment rate was increased over 50% in priming treatments. Interestingly, seedling establishment rate under azolla extract (0.1%) extracted with ethanol was promoted over 2.5 times compared to the control in a black rice, Joseongheugchal and red rice, Jeogjinju.

  • This study was performed to evaluate the quality characteristics and antioxidant activity of sikhe prepared using various concentrations of hot water extracts roasted coffee ground residue (CR-sikhe; 0.2, 0.4, 0.6, 0.8, and 1.0%). The pH increased with increasing CR concentration. The reducing sugar content after 5 h saccharification was the highest when 0.8% CR extract was used. Total polyphenol and flavonoid contents increased in a concentration-dependent manner reaching maximum levels when 1.0% CR-extract was used. The antioxidant activities of CR-extracts were higher than that of the control and increased dose-dependently. The CR-0.6 showed the best taste (4.28), color (4.56), flavor (4.08), and overall acceptability (4.28). After 10 day of storage at $4^{\circ}C$, the total cell count in CR-sikhe was approximately 1-2 log cycle, which was less than that in the control.
