  • In this paper, a dual-band antenna is proposed for the RF power harvester system as well as RFID tag. The proposed antenna operates as the passive and active RFID tag antenna in the UHF and microwave band, respectively. In addition, to charge the battery of an active RFID tag in the microwave band, it harvest the RF signal for tagging from the passive RFID tag antenna in the UHF band. The proposed antenna operates in the UHF band (917~923.5 MHz) and microwave band (2.4~2.45 GHz). In order to obtain the dual-band operation, the dipole structure and meander parasitic elements are proposed as the ${\lambda}/2$ and $1{\lambda}$ dipole antenna, respectively. The radiating dipole structure in the microwave band acts as the coupled feed for the meander parasitic elements in the UHF band. The impedance bandwidth (VSWR < 2) of the proposed antenna covers 917~923.5 MHz (UHF band) and 2.4~2.45 GHz (Microwave band). Measured total efficiencies are over 45 % in the UHF band and over 70 % in the microwave band. Peak gains are over 0.18 dBi and 2.8 dBi in the UHF and microwave band with an omni-directional radiation pattern, respectively.

  • Previous studies have selected wireless power transmission system using 2.45 GHz of ISM band, but the researches for 5.8 GHz microwave wireless power transmission have been relatively rare. The 5.8 GHz has some advantages compared with 2.45 GHz. Those are smaller antenna and smaller integrated system for RFIC. In this paper, the 5.8 GHz wireless power transmission system was developed and transmission efficiency was measured according to the distance. A transmitter sent the amplified microwaves through an antenna amplified by a power amplifier of 1W for 5.8 GHz, and a receiver was converted to DC from RF through a RF-DC Converter. In the 1W 5.8GHz wireless power transmission system, the converted currents and voltages were measured to evaluate transmission efficiency at each distance where LED lights up to 1m. The RF-DC Converter is designed and fabricated by impedance matching using full-wave rectifier circuit. The transmission-efficiency of the system shows from 1.05% at 0cm to 0.095% at 100cm by distance.

  • A reduction/oxidation reaction between A1 metal powder and SiO2 powder was performed by Self-propagating High-temperature Synthesis (SHS) reaction induced by microwave energy to produce a composite of Al2O3 and Si powders by using a 2.45 GHz kitchen model microwave oven. A Microwave Hybrid Heating(MHH) method was applied by using SiC powders as a suscepting material to raise the temperature of the disk samples and the heat increase rate of over 100℃/min were obtained before the reaction. The reaction started around 850℃ and the heat increase rate jumped to over 200℃/min after the reaction took place.

  • A 2.45 GHz electron cyclotron resonance (ECR) plasma source with a belt magnet assembly configuration (BMC) was developed for hyperthermal neutral beam (HNB) generation. A plasma source for high flux HNB generation should be satisfied with the requirements: low pressure operation, high density, and thin plasma. The ECR plasma source with BMC achieved high density at low operation pressure due to electron confinement enhancement caused by high mirror ratio and drifts in toroidal direction. The 2.45 GHz microwave launcher had a circularly bended WR340 waveguide with slits. The microwave E-field profile induced by the microwave launcher was studied in this paper. The E-field profile was a cups field perpendicular to B-filed at ECR zone. The optimized E-field profile and B-field were found for effective ECR heating.

  • This paper discusses methods for increasing the germination rate of barley seeds using low direct and alternating current power below 110V. The experimental apparatus used here is a parallel plate, with the bottom surface of the plate designed to be wider than the top surface to increase the size of the electrostatic field. As a result, three different magnitudes of electrostatic fields were created on the plates: the first ranging from 400V/cm to 600V/cm, the second from 600V/cm to 900V/cm, and the third from 2200V/cm to 2400V/cm. The finite difference method was applied to analyze the electrostatic field inside the parallel plate. The plant seeds used in the experiments were barley seeds produced domestically. The average germination rate of barley seeds using the presented electrostatic field in this paper was 57%, while it was 65% when using a microwave of 2.45GHz, compared to a control group with a result of 31%. An important difference between using the electrostatic field and the 2.45GHz microwave is the dry method and wet method. When applying these two methods to practical seed germination, it is necessary to consider the advantages and disadvantages of each experimental approach and choose the appropriate method accordingly.

  • In order to utilize as a pre-ionization means for reproducible ohmic plasma on KAIST-TOKAMAK, a simple, safe, economical and continuous microwave source has been developed using a home kitchen micro-wave oven. The magnetron used in the study can provide 500 W of power at 2.45 GHz. A conventional magnetron in a home kitchen microwave oven generates microwave for 8 ms at every 16 ms periodically due to the periodic (60 Hz) high voltage applied to the magnetron cathode. In order to generate continuous microwave which is suitable for tokamak pre-ionization, the magnetron operation circuit has been modified using a DC high voltage (5 kV, 1 A) power supply. It provides high-voltage with small ripple for magnetron cathode bias. Using the developed magnetron system, electron cyclotron resonace heated (ECH) plasmas were produced and the characteristics of the system were studied by diagnosing the ECH plasma using Langmuir probe and $H_{\alpha}$ emission diagnostics.

  • This paper deals with a new variable microwave power distributor and a connector between a deck plate and a input power waveguide for indoor microwave wireless power transmission. We design a new type connector built in the 3-stage coaxial line structure, and calculate the return loss of the connector at 2.45GHz. Newly designed connector shows the excellent return loss performance less than -30dB at the operating frequency of 2.45GHz. And we show a power distributor in which the dividing ratio of the power is controlled mechanically by three rotary fins. The distributor can control the dividing power from 4.5% to 58% with the variance of 5% output power. The experimentally tested results of the distributor are good agreement with the simulation within the return loss of 1%.

  • This paper presents the development processes of a microwave radiometer for remote sensing of water surface temperature. Achieving the measurement accuracy within $2^{\circ}C$ for water surface temperature of $5{\sim}30^{\circ}C$, the requirements and specifications of the microwave radiometer and its receiver are drawn. The receiver with high gain, high sensitivity is designed and implemented. The receiver has the bandwidth of 50 MHz, the system gain of 45.2 dB and the sensitivity of 0.56K at 5.02 GHz. The effectiveness of the developed microwave radiometer in the measurement of water surface temperature is demonstrated experimentally. The results show the microwave radiometer can detect water surface temperature for $7.5{\sim}18^{\circ}C$ within the accuracy of $0.45^{\circ}C$.

  • Ni-Zn ferrite was sintered by microwave hybrid sintering method using microwave energy of 2.45 GHz, 700 W in the temperature range of 900$^{\circ}C$ ∼ 1070$^{\circ}C$. A high density (98%TD) Ni-Zn ferrite, added Bi$_2$O$_3$ and CuO, with a single phase was obtained by microwave sintering at 970$^{\circ}C$ for 15 min. All the sintered samples showed sintered density over 90% of TD. These results indicate that the processing time and energy consumption can be reduced significantly by microwave hybrid sintering method.
