Reactive hydroxypropyl methylcellulose phthalate (reactive HPMCP) was synthesized by using a stepwise urethane reaction with isophorone diisocyanate (IPDI) and 2-hydroxyethyl moth acrylate (HEMA). Molecular weight, acid number, and critical micelle concentration (CMC) of the synthesized reactive HPMCP and pristine HPMCP were measured and used as a polymeric surfactant in the emulsion polymerizations of styrene. In the preparation of HPMCP-hybrid poly styrene nanoparticles, 6, 9, 12, 18, and 24 wt% of HPMCPs were introduced, and the maximum rate of polymerization ($R_{p,max}$), the average number of radicals per particle (n), particle size distribution were investigated. In addition, core - shell morphology of the nanoparticles were observed by using TEM and their thermal stabilities were measured by using TGA. Reactive HPMCP showed higher $R_{p,max}$, smaller particle size, larger values of n and gel contents as compared with pristine HPMCP, due to the vinyl groups from HEMA, which can be reacted with styrene oligomers, in the reactive HPMCP.

In order to improve resistant properties of water-borne acrylic pressure sensitive adhesives(PSAs) for automobiles, this study was carried out. Removable PSAs for automobiles were synthesized by emulsion polymerization of monomers, n-butyl acrylate(BA), n-butyl methacrylate(BMA), acrylonitrile(AN), acrylic acid(AA) and 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate(2-HEMA), and AA and 2-HEMA could act as functional monomers for crosslink. Emulsion polymerization was carried out in a semi-batch type reactor. Water resistance, heat resistance, acid resistance, alkali resistance and smoke resistance were examined. As a result, water resistance increased with the amount of BMA, however, the effect of BMA content on the water resistance was insignificant at a range of over 14 wt%. The water resistance also increased with the amount of functional monomers, AA and 2-HEMA. The prepared PSAs satisfied all the standard for automobiles except heat resistance. However, the heat resistance comes nearly up to the standard. Also, acid resistance, alkali resistance and smoke resistance of the prepared PSAs satisfied with the standard.

Copolymers (HSA-98-20, HSA-98-0, HSA-98+20) which are acrylic resin containing 80% solid content were synthesized by the reaction of monomers, including methyl methacrylate, n-butyl acrylate, and 2-hydroxyethyl acrylate with a functional monomer, such as acetoacetoxyethyl methacrylate (AAEM), which may improve in cross-linking density and physical properties of films. The physical properties of prepared acrylic resins, containing AAEM, are as follows : viscosity, $1420{\sim}5760cps$ ; number average molecular weight, $2080{\sim}2300$ ; polydispersity index, $2.07{\sim}2.19$ ; conversions, $88{\sim}93%$, respectively. To prepare acryl resins, four kinds of initiators including ${\alpha},{\alpha}'-azobisisobutyronitirile$ (AIBN), di-tert-butyl peroxide (DTBP), t-amylperoxy-2-ethyl hexanoate (APEH), benzoyl peroxide (BPO) were used. The viscosity of the acrylic resins prepared with these initiators was increased in the order of DTBP>APEH>AIBN>BPO. APEH was proved as a suitable initiator in this study. Shear rates of acrylic resins were constant in respect to viscosity. From these results, it would appear that the resins have Newtonian flow characteristics and good workability.

The physical properties of the acrylic pressure sensitive adhesives (PSAs) can be easily controlled by a proper functional monomer which has functional groups for crosslinking. This study was to investigate the effect of crosslinking agents, isocyanate and epoxy types, of acrylic PSAs on adhesive properties. 2-Ethylhexyl acrylate, acrylic acid (AA), and 2-hydroxy ethyl methacrylate as monomer were used. The obtained samples with different AA contents were partially crosslinked with epoxy- or isocyanate-typed agent. Peel strength, balltack, holding power test and contraction percentage of the obtained PSA were evaluated. Most properties of acrylic PSAs were increased with AA content and acrylic PSAs with epoxy-typed crosslinking agent (4 crosslinking sites) which produces flexible link (ether), showed better properties than those of isocyanate-typed one (3 crosslinking sites).
In this study, the polyurethane acrylates (PUA) resin with good adhesive and flexibility for adhesive for shoes and clothing were synthesized using that poly(tetramethylene adiphate glycol) (PTAd), poly(tetramethylene ether glycol) (PTMG) as polyester polyol and polyether polyol respectively, including 4,4'-methylene diphenyl diisocyanate (MDI), isophorone diisocyanate (IPDI), 1,4-butandiol (1,4-BD), 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate (2-HEMA) and dibutyl amine (DBA). The effect of polyol blend in the polyurethane acrylate on thermal and mechanical properties, adhesion strength and flexural strength were studied. The glass transition temperature (Tg) of PUA was confirmed in range of -70~-40 ℃. In addition, the glass transition temperature (Tg), decomposition temperature (Td), tensile strength adhesion strength and heat resistance were increased as increasing of PTAd amount while the elongation, water resistance and flexural properties were decreased. The synthesized polyurethane acrylate with 5:5 ratio of PTAd and PTMG indicated the highest adhesion strength and flexural properties.

New pressure sensitive adhesives (PSAs) for polarizer film were prepared by electron beam (e-beam) radiation to acrylic copolymers, and their adhesive properties were investigated. The acrylic copolymers were synthesized by free radical polymerization of $n$-butylacrylate (BA), 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA), and acrylic acid (AA). The acrylic copolymers were coated on PET release films to a thickness of 25 ${\mu}m$, laminated to polarizer films, and then radiated with e-beam at room temperature. Gel fractions of all the acrylic copolymers after e-beam radiation at 50 kGy were higher than 93%, and their crosslinking densities were increased with increasing the content of HEMA units. PSA prepared by e-beam radiation of acrylic copolymer synthesized with a feed ratio of BA/HEMA/AA = 89.5/10/0.5 (w/w/w) at a dose of 50 kGy exhibited the best adhesion performances in terms of peel strength, creep resistance, durability and reliability, and light leakage. It is expected that the preparation method of PSAs via e-beam irradiation will improve the producibility and workability of polarizer film for liquid crystal display.
Purpose: The physical and optical characteristics of hydrophilic contact lens polymerized with addition of glycerin and PVP(polyvinylpyrrolidone) in the basic hydrogel contact lens material were evaluated. Methods: This study used glycerin and PVP(polyvinylpyrrolidone) with the cross-linker EGDMA (ethylene glycol dimethacrylate), HEMA (2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate) and the initiator AIBN (azobisisobutyronitrile) for copolymerization. Results: Measurements of the physical characteristics of the copolymerized material including PVP(polyvinylpyrrolidone) showed the refractive index of 1.4382~1.4288, tensile strength of 0.3446~2542 kgf and water content and contact angle of sample showed the increase of 13.49% and decrease of 21.44% independently. And also, the physical characteristics of the copolymerized material including glycerin showed the refractive index of 1.4330~1.4328, tensile strength of 0.2974~0.2854 kgf, water content 35.58~36.53% and contact angle of sample showed the decrease of 37.64%. Conclusions: Based on the results of this study, the produced copolymers is suitable for conventional lens with high wettability. Also, glycerin minimized the changes of water content and refractive index at the same time, increased the wettability of the hydrogel lens materials.

The plasma source ion implantation(PSII) technique which is a method using high negative voltage pulse in plasma system has the potential to change the surface properties of polymer. PSII technique increase the surface free energy by introducing polar functional groups on the surface so that it improves reactivity, hydrophilicity, adhension, biocompatability, etc. However, the mobility of polymer chains enables the modified surface layers to adapt their composition to interfacial force. This hydrophobic recovery interrupts the stability of modified surfaces to keep for the long time. In this study, poly(methyl methacrylate)(PMMA), poly(2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate)(PHEMA), and polu(2-hydroxypropyl methacylate)(PHPMA) for contact lens application, were modified to improve the wettability with PSII technique and were investigated the surface stabilities. Polymer film was prepared with solution casting(3 wt.% solution) and was annealed at 11$0^{\circ}C$ under vacuum oven to remove solvent completely and to eliminate physical ageing. The thickness of the film measured by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and surface profilometer was about 10${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$. Polymers were treated with different kinds of gases, pulse frequency, pulse with, pulse voltage, and treatment time. Even though PMMA, PHEMA, and PHPMA have similar repeat unit structure, the optimal treatment conditions and the tendency to hydrophobic recovery were different. PHPMA, more hydrophilic polymer than PMMA and PHEMA showd better wettability and stability after mild treatment. Surface tensions were obtained by water and diiodomethane contact angle measurements to monitor the relation between hydrophobic recovery and polymer structure. Different ion species in plasma change the polar component and dispersion component of polymer surface. For better wettability surface, the increase of polar component was a dominant factor. We also characterized modified polymer surfaces using x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy(XPS), secondary ion mass spectrometry(SIMS), Fourier Transform infrared spectroscopy(FT-IR), and SEM.
Spherical-type zirconia granules are successfully fabricated by a spray-drying process using a water solvent slurry, and the change in the green density of the granule powder compacts is examined according to the organic polymers used. Two organic binders, polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA), which are dissolved in a water solvent and have different degrees of polymerization, are applied to the slurry with a plasticizer (polyethylene glycol). The granules employing a binder with a higher degree of polymerization (PVA) are not broken under a uniaxial press; consequently, they exhibit a poor green density of $2.4g/cm^3$. In contrast, the granule powder compacts employing a binder with a lower degree of polymerization (HEMA) show a higher density of $2.6g/cm^3$ with an increase in plasticizer content. The packing behavior of the granule powders for each organic polymer system is studied by examining the microstructure of the fracture surface at different applied pressures.
Purpose: Adsorption properties of lysozyme and albumin according to physiochemical properties of commercial contact lens classified with the FDA categories and a contact lens fabricated in the laboratory were investigated. Methods: The contact lens were prepared using HEMA(2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate) and TRIM(3-(trimethoxysilyl) propyl methacrylate) in a cast mold. Artificial tears containing lysozyme and albumin were prepared. We measured the amounts of protein adsorbed on the each lenses with varying adsorbed time (48 hour) and the pH range (6, 6.8, 7.4, 8.2, 9) of artificial tear. Amount of the proteins absorbed on the contact lenses were measured by using HPLC. Results: Time to reach the equilibrium of protein adsorption for silicone hydrogel lens was taken longer than hydrogel lens. The amount of adsorbed both lysozyme and albumin at equilibrium were greater for the hydrogel lens than the silicone hydrogel lens, and larger for the ionic lens than the non-ionic lens. Lysozyme was more adsorbed on the higher water content of contact lens, whereas albumin was more adsorbed on the lower water content of contact lens. Only lysozyme was adsorbed on the Group IV hydrogel lens of ionic higher water content. The adsorption of protein on contact lens increased with pH of artificial tears as close to the isoelectric point of each protein. Conclusions: The adsorption amount of lysozyme is more affected by the ionic strength of the contact lens surface than the water content of contact lens. Albumin adsorption is more affected by water content than the ionic strength of the contact lens surface. For the adsorption of proteins on the silicone hydrogel lens, the pore size, determined both by the number of Si atoms and the chemical structure of the silicone-containing monomers, as well as the polarity of contact lens should be also considered.
