Development of a Rigid- Ended beam Element and a Simplified 3-Dimensional Analysis Method for Ship Structures

  • In this paper, a 2-dimensional novel beam element is developed and a method to replace the 3-dimensional analysis with 2-dimensional analysis is proposed. The developed novel beam element named rigid-ended beam element can consider the effect of three kinds of span points within one element, which was impossible in modeling with the ordinary beam element. Calculated results for the portal frame using the rigid-ended beam element agree with the results using membrane element. And also, the proposed simplified 3- dimensional analysis method which includes two step analysis using influence coefficients shows good accuracy. Structural analysis using the rigid-ended beam element and the simplified 3-dimensional method is revealed to have good computing efficiency due to unnecessity of the elements corresponding to the brackets and simplification of 3-dimensional analysis.

  • This thesis deals with a method to solve a two-and-one-half-dimensional ($2\frac12$ D) problem, which means that the ocean environment is two-dimensional whereas the source is fully three-dimensionally propagating, including three-dimensional refraction phenomena and three-dimensional back-scattering, using two-dimensional two-way parabolic equation method combined with Fourier synthesis. Two dimensional two-way parabolic equation method uses Galerkin's method for depth and Crank-Nicolson method and alternating direction for range and provides a solution available to range-dependent problem with wave-field back-scattered from discontinuous interface. Since wavenumber, k, is the function of depth and vertical or horizontal range, we can reduce a dimension of three-dimensional Helmholtz equation by Fourier transforming in the range direction. Thus transformed two-dimensional Helmholtz equation is solved through two-way parabolic equation method. Finally, we can have the $2\frac12$ D solution by inverse Fourier transformation of the spectral solution gained from in the last step. Numerical simulation has been carried out for a canonical ocean environment with stair-step bottom in order to test its accuracy using the present analysis. With this spectral parabolic equation method, we have examined three-dimensional acoustic propagation properties in a specified site in the Korean Straits.

  • Conventional methods for railway vehicle dynamic analysis have mostly relied on the approximate method based on 2-dimensional contact analysis. Recently, 3-dimensional approaches to achieve an accurate solution for wheel-rail contact analysis have been proposed, but are not practical to apply to actual simulation due to time-consuming processes. The main focus of this study is to present a new method of railway vehicle dynamic analysis by calculating wheel-rail contact forces based on efficient 3-dimensional wheel-rail contact analysis. A 3-dimensional wheel-rail contact analysis and numerical analysis of wheelset dynamic equations will be presented.

  • In this paper, we dealt with substantial asset analysis methodology applied to two-dimensional asset classification and qualitative evaluation method according to the business process. Most of the existent risk analysis methodology and tools presented classification by asset type and physical evaluation by a quantitative method. We focused our research on qualitative evaluation with 2-dimensional asset classification. It converts from quantitative asset value with purchase cost, recovery and exchange cost, etc. to qualitative evaluation considering specific factors related to the business process. In the first phase, we classified the IT assets into tangible and intangible assets, including human and information data asset, and evaluated their value. Then, we converted the quantitative asset value to the qualitative asset value using a conversion standard table. In the second phase, we reclassified the assets using 2-dimensional classification factors reflecting the business process, and applied weight to the first evaluation results. This method is to consider the organization characteristics, IT asset structure scheme and business process. Therefore, we can evaluate the concrete and substantial asset value corresponding to the organization business process, even if they are the same asset type.

  • At the initial design stage, for rapid evaluation of strength of ship structures, finite element analysis using beam elements is carried out in general. In beam modeling of ship structures, brackets are usually represented by rigid elements to simplify the analysis. Extent of rigid ends, which is called as a span point, can be determined from the three kinds of view points, i.e., bending, shearing and axial deformation. In this paper, a 2-dimensional novel beam element is developed and a method to replace the 3-dimensional analysis with 2-dimensional analysis is proposed.   • Past research has concentrated on refining two-dimensional analysis techniques. Rather extensive comparisons of various two-dimensional methods have been made. This paper described a general three-dimensional method of analysis by which any geometrical condition and any c, phi soil can be analyzed. The results are as follows; 1. Factors of safety computed for 3-dimensional geometry differ considerably from ordinary 2-dimensional factors of safety. 2. 3-dimensional factors of safety are generally much higher than 2-dimensional factors of safety. However, situations appear to exist where the 3-dimensional factor of safety can be lower than the 2-dimensional factor of safety. 3. The F3/F2 ration appears to be quite sensitive to c, phi and to the slope.

A method for underwater image analysis using bi-dimensional empirical mode decomposition technique

  • Recent developments in underwater image recognition methods have received large attention by the ocean engineering researchers. In this paper, an improved bi-dimensional empirical mode decomposition (BEMD) approach is employed to decompose the given underwater image into intrinsic mode functions (IMFs) and residual. We developed a joint algorithm based on BEMD and Canny operator to extract multi-pixel edge features at multiple scales in IMFs sub-images. So the multiple pixel edge extraction is an advantage of our approach; the other contribution of this method is the realization of the bi-dimensional sifting process, which is realized utilizing regional-based operators to detect local extreme points and constructing radial basis function for curve surface interpolation. The performance of the multi-pixel edge extraction algorithm for processing underwater image is demonstrated in the contrast experiment with both the proposed method and the phase congruency edge detection.

  • Many researches on disaster prevention using computer simulation methods can be performed to minimize the damage of property and to protect human life. Discontinuous deformation analysis (DDA) is a new computer simulation method to analyze the behavior of discontinuous rock masses. Since most rock slope problems are 3-dimensional in nature, 2-dimensional deformation analysis has limited application. In this study, the basic principles of 3-dimensional discontinuous deformation analysis are described. The newly developed 3-dimensional discontinuous deformation analysis method is proposed as the computer simulation method for discontinuous rock masses. Then, the failure behavior of rock slopes are simulated using 3-dimensional discontinuous deformation analysis. The simulation results are compared and examined with the failure behavior at the rock slopes. The results show the applicability of 3-dimensional discontinuous deformation analysis to analyze the deformation and failure mechanisms of rock slopes.

  • This study tried the 1st, 2nd dimensional numerical analysis according to the pier's shape, size and installing method in order to compare the depth of scour calculation method using the variables calculated by using the 2nd dimensional numerical analysis with the calculated depth of scour value by using the calculated variables by using the 1st dimensional numerical analysis. And then verified the problems occurring when the depth of scour is calculated by using the calculated values by using the 1st dimensional numerical analysis, as calculating the deviation depending on it.

  • Two dimensional Analysis has been applied to most of tunnel lining design in these days. Two dimensional analysis uses beam or curved beam element for finite element method. But because the behaviors of tunnel concrete lining structure is near to shell, it is required to model the tunnel lining as shell structure for safety design of tunnel lining structure. In this paper, two dimensional analysis by beam element and the three dimensional analysis by shell element of tunnel concrete lining are studied, in which 3 type of tunnel lining and lateral pressure factors are considered. As results of the study, three dimensional analyses of the behavior of tunnel concrete lining structure considering lateral pressure factor shows that the moment of three dimensional analysis is greater than those of two dimensional analysis. The results shows that three dimensional analysis is necessary for safety design of tunnel lining.
