  • This paper proposes an adaptive algorithm for the quantization step size control of MPEG-2, using the information obtained from the previously encoded picture. Before quantizing the DCT coefficients, the properties of reconstruction error of each macro block (MB) is predicted from the previous frame. For the prediction of the error of current MB, a block with the size of MB in the previous frame are chosen by use of the motion vector. Since the original and reconstructed images of the previous frame are available in the encoder, we can calculate the reconstruction error of this block. This error is considered as the expected error of the current MB if it is quantized with the same step size and bit rate. Comparing the error of the MB with the average of overall MBs, if it is larger than the average, small step size is given for this MB, and vice versa. As a result, the error distribution of the MB is more concentrated to the average, giving low variance and improved image quality. Especially for the low bit application, the proposed algorithm gives much smaller error variance and higher PSNR compared to TM5 (test model 5).

  • 2-Methylisoborneol (2-MIB) is one of typical odorants in potable water sources, which is hardly removed by conventional water treatment process. In this study, three strains capable of removing 2-MIB singly from drinking water were isolated from activated carbon of sand filter. They were identified to be Shinella zoogloeoides, Bacillus idriensis and Chitinophagaceae bacterium based on 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis. In mineral salts medium without external carbon source, removal efficiencies of $20{\mu}g/L$ 2-MIB in three days were 23.3%, 32.9% and 17.0% for Shinella zoogloeoides, Bacillus idriensis and Chitinophagaceae bacterium, respectively. The biodegradation of 2-MIB was significantly improved with the presence of cometabolism carbon(glycerol, glucose, etc.). In the period of 20 days, Bacillus idriensis can remove 2 mg/L MIB to $368.2{\mu}g/L$ and $315.4{\mu}g/L$ in mineral salts medium without and with glycerol respectively. The removal of 2-MIB by Bacillus idriensis was from 2 mg/L to $958.4{\mu}g/L$ in Xiba river samples on 15 days.

  • This study was designed to investigate the distributions of the positive cells in rat spleens by two monoclonal antibodies of MT1 and MB2. The spleens of immature 10 rats (Sprague Duwely, approximately 200gm) were collected and paraffin-embedded sections of spleens were stained with immunohistochemical methods. Higher proportions of MT1-positive cell number in spleens were ordered as marginal zone(8.5~18.1%), red pulp(2.1~8.8%) and periarterial lymphoid sheath(0~1.6%) in white pulp, and those of MB2-positive cell number are ordered as the central area of the periarterial lymphoid sheath(100%), red pulp(29.1~45.0%), marginal zone(15.2~30.4%), and peripheral area of periarterial lymphoid sheath(2.3~3.5%). The positive cells by MB2 are more numerous in number than by MT1. The above results were concluded that the positive cells by above two monoclonal antibodies were scattered throughout the red pulp and marginal zone, but in the central area of the periarterial lymphoid sheath, the MB2-positive cells only were present.

  • SPME (Soild phase microextraction) has been used in the analysis of many volatile organic compounds, such as geosmin and 2-methylisoborneol (2-MIB), trihalomethanes (THMs) in drinking water. SPME fiber is characterized by high adsorption capacity (DVB/CAR/PDMS, DVB/PDMS etc.). Although the highly active adsorption capacities of the SPME fiber are often to the chemical functional group, surface properties play a significant role in determining the surface adsorption capacities. The objectives of this study were to evaluate effect of residual chlorine on analysis of geosmin and 2-MIB. Image taken by SEM before preloaded with chlorine, the surface and porous media was almost perfect spherical shape and no clogging of pores. However, after preloaded with chlorine the surface was aggregated and pore was blocked. The recovery rate of geosmin and 2-MIB coexisting with chlorine was reduced by 35 to 62%. The recovery rate with preloaded with chlorine was reduced by 25 to 43%. The lower concentration of geosmin and 2-MIB and the higher concentration of chlorine existed in water, the lower the recovery rate was.

  • Metachromatic properties of admixture of methylene blue(MB) and thionine in aqueous solution has been studied by fluorescence spectroscopy. In spite of nonfluorescence character has been MB itself, mixing MB to monomeric concentration of thionine, new coaggregation band has been formed in shorter wave length than fluorescence of thionine because of MB was redistributed to thionine aggregate. It suggested that coaggregate of MB and thionine were more tightly formed than the each dye aggregate.

  • We investigated the effect of gingerol (Zingiber officinale Roscoe, Zingiberaceae) on Bcl-2 and Bax expression in MDA-MB-231 human breast cell lines. The oleoresin from rhizomes of ginger contains [6]-gingerol (1-[4'-hydroxy-3'-methoxyphenyl]-5-hydroxy-3-decanone). We previously reported that [6]-gingerol inhibits cell proliferation in MDA-MB-231 human breast cancer cell lines. In this study, we examined protein and mRNA expression associated with cell apoptosis in MDA-MB-231 human breast cancer cell lines. We cultured MDA-MB-231 cells in presence of various concentrations 0, 2.5, 5 and $10\;{\mu}M$ of [6]-gingerol. Bcl-2 protein and its mRNA levels were decreased dose-dependently in cells treated with [6]-gingerol, but Bax protein and its mRNA levels were unchanged by [6]-gingerol treatment. Bcl-2/Bax ratio was decreased in a dose dependent manner treated with [6]-gingerol. Caspase-3 activity was significantly increased dose-dependently in cell treated with [6]-gingerol (p<0.05). In conclusion, we have shown that [6]-gingerol induces apoptosis in MDA-MB-231 human breast cancer cell lines.

  • Twenty one strains strongly producing protease were isolated from Korean traditional Cheonggukjang. Eight strains selected by sensory evaluation on Cheonggukjang prepared with isolated strains were identified with based on biochemical properties a and 16S rDNA sequencing. Identified strains were Bacillus subtilis MB4, and Bacillus amyloliquefaciens A1, A2, B1, MC1, SB2, SC1, and SD1. Protease activities, important strain selection factor, were higher in Cheongjukjang prepared with B. subtilis MB4 (179.6 Unit) and B. amyloliquefaciens SB2 (201.9 Unit) than commercial traditional Cheonggukjang (97.9 Unit). Sensory evaluation revealed Cheonggukjang prepared with B. subtilis MB4 had flavor very similar to commercial traditional Cheonggukjang. Cheonggukjang prepared with B. suhtilis MB4 (0.0006 Pa s) and commercial traditional Cheonggukjang (0.0002 Pa s) revealed lower viscosities than those of Cheonggukjang prepared with B. amyloliquefaciens SB2, MC1, B1, A1, SD1, A2, and SC1 (0.006 to 0.008 Pa s at 1001/s. Results show Cheonggukjang could be prepared using single strain of B. subtilis MB4, maintaining high protease activity and very similar sensory and viscosity qualities with those of commercial traditional Cheonggukjang.

  • The aim of this study was to investigate the rheological properties of arabinogalactans (AGs) solution isolated from moth bean (MB), navy bean (NB), and soybean (SB) including monosaccharide compositions, intrinsic viscosity, steady shear and dynamic shear rheological properties. The major monosaccharides in MB, NB, and SB were arabinose (64.8, 51.4, and 42.6%) and galactose (13.4, 19.6, and 46.2%). The yield stresses for 5% (w/v) NB and 2.5% (w/v) SB solutions were assessed as 2.10 Pa and 1.98 Pa, respectively, but in case of MB solution, it was observed to be negligible. While 5% MB solution showed rheopectic property, 5% NB and SB solutions showed thixotropic properties. As a result of frequency sweep experiment, the G' values in 2.5% MB and NB were larger than the G" value showed but 2.5% SB exhibited G" value greater than G'. These results would be useful for future application as a food additive in the food industry.

  • Polypropylene (PP)/corn starch master batch(starch-MB) blends with different PP compositions of 90, 80, 70, and 60 wt% were prepared by melt compounding at $200^{\circ}C$, using lab scale Brabender mixer. The chemical structures, thermal properties and non-isothermal crystallization behavior of the PP/starch-MB blends were investigated by FT-infrared spectrometry (FT-IR), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), and thermogravimetric analyzer (TGA). The fabrication of the PP/starch-MB blend was confirmed by the existence of hydroxy group in FT-IR spectrum. There was no district change in melting temperature and melting enthalpy, and TGA curve indicates a decrease in degradation temperature with starch-MB content. The non-isothermal crystallization process was analyzed using by Avrami equation. The Avrami exponents were in the range of 2.71-3.97 for PP and 1.48-1.99 for PP/starch-MB blonds. The activation energies calculated by Kissinger method were 233 kJ/mol for PP, 484 kJ/mol for PP90, 541 kJ/mol for PP80, 553 kJ/mol for PP70, and 422 kJ/mol for PP60.
