The effect of different ethanol feeding protocols on the oxidative stress in liver and blain of rats was studied. The rats were fed 5%-ethanol solution in drinking water (5%-EtOH group) or 2.5g ethanol/kg body wt. once daily intragastrically (2.5g-EtOH group). The levels of thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TRARS) and vitamin EI in the liver, cerebrum and cerebellum were measured. In the liver of 5%-EtOH group, the level of TBARS was not changed, whereas vitamin I was significantly increased compared to control group. In the liver of 2.5g-EtOH group, the level of TBARS was significantly increased compared to control group and the vitamin E concentration was not affected. The levels of TBARS were increased and the vitamin E concentrations were decreased significantly both in the cerebrum and cerebellum in 5%-EtOH group as well as in 2.5g-EtOH group. These results show that lipid peroxidation and vitamin E concentration in liver were varied according to the conditions of ethanol treatment, however, the vitamin E contents in cerebrum and cerebellum were affected by both ethanol intoxications used in this study.
The study carried out to clarify the effects of lard and corn oil on serum total cholesterol content and liver thiobarbituric acid (TBA) value in ethanol (Et-OH) fed mice. Results obtained from the present study were a follows: 1. serum total cholesterol content was considerably increased by 25% Et-OH administration in mice. In case of 25% Et-OH plus Lard group and Lard group both group were also increased significantly to compare with normal value of mice but 25% Et-OH plus lard group was shown very higher value rather than that of Lard group and Lard group was found similar tendency to compare with the 25% Et-OH plus saline group except to after the 1 day. 2. serum total cholestrol content of 25% Et-OH plus Corn oil group and corn oil group were also increased significantly to compare with normal value, but the 25% Et-Oh plus Corn oil group slightly higher level than that of Corn oil group except to after the 3 days. 3. Lard group was also very similar tendency to compare with the corn oil group except to the 3 days. 4. liver TBA value was increased by 25% Et-OH fed mice. 25% Et-OH plus Lard group and Lard group were also increased significantly to compare with liver TBA value in normal mice, but 25% Et-OH plus Lard group was found higher value rather than that of lard group and 25% Et-OH group (Control). Lard group was similar to that of Control group except to after the 1 day. And 25% Et-OH plus Corn oil group was considerably increased rather than that of Control group, and liver TBA value of the above group was similar to that of 25% Et-OH plus Lard group except to after the 3 days. Corn oil group was shown lower value than that of lard group, but it was no significant.

채란 2일 (group I, day 2 ET), 5일째 이식 (group II, day 5 ET) 또는 재이식 (group III, SET; 2-5, 2-6, 2-7, 3-5, 4-7일)을 실시하면서 수정률, 할구분할률 및 임신율을 각각 비교하였다.
To elucidate a potential contribution of endotheline-1[ET-1] to the genesis of pulmonary hypertension and postoperative pulmonary hypertensive crisis in the patients with heart disease, we measured plasma levels of the ET-1 during perioperative period of open heart surgery. In addition, we examined changes of ET-1 during perioperative period and correlations between ET-1 levels and hemodynamic variables. 12 patients including 5 acquired heart disease and 7 congenital heart disease patients were selected randomly as a study group, Group A and B, respectively. 6 patients proved not having heart or hemodynamic problem were selected as a control, Group C. 110 blood samples from pulmonary artery[ET-P] and radial artery[ET-S] were taken and assayed by Sep-pak extraction and RIA. ET-1 levels of Group A were ET-P, 3.94$\pm$5.31pg /ml, ET-S, 3.10$\pm$2.90pg/ml[p>0.05], Group B were ET-P, 1.63$\pm$0.62pg/ml, ET-S, 1.99$\pm$2.45pg/ml[p>0.05], Group C were ET-P, 1.97$\pm$2.02pg/ml, ET-S, 1.72$\pm$0.77pg/ml[p>0.05]. There were no statistically significant differences of ET-1 levels among the Group A, B, C[p>0.05]. There was no correlation between pulmonary artery pressure[PAP] and ET-1 level[p>0.05], and ET-1 levels were not increased even in the cases of pulmonary hypertensive criwis or low cardiac output syndrome, whereas significant correlation between ET-S and pulmonary vascular res-istance[Rp] [r=0.36, p<0.05], and negative correlation between ET-S and OS saturation of pulmonary artery[OS-P][r= -0.49, p<0.01] were identified. Another significant finding was peak increase of ET-1 levels in the postoperative period 1 hour[p<0.05] and then gra-dualy decrease through the postoperative period. In conclusion, ET-1 has no correlation with PAP, whereas correlation with Rp, and inverse correlation with OS-P. It is suggested that ET-1 is neither the direct causative substance of pulmonary hypertension nor pulmonary vasospasm but there must be increased production of ET-1 in chronic pulmonary hypertensive state. Counter-regulatory mechanism to ET-1 is speculated during the pulmonary vasospasm.

Objectives : To investigate the effects of DL-HGF to hair growth activity in mouse, various kinds of ethosome and liposome formulations entrapped DL-HGF were produced and this study was carried out. Methods : The B16/BL6 mice were classified into five groups: vehicle control (Con) group, Et-1-applied group, Et-2-applied group, LP-1-applied group, LP-2-applied group. Active hair growth (anagen) was induced in the back skin by application of a waxosin mixture with subsequent depilation and the activity of hair growth was measured by macroscopic observation and histology. Results : In vehicle control group, there was no hair growth activity during experiment period. In Et-1-applied group, the rate of hair growth was about 100%, LP-1-applied group and Et-2-applied group showed 70-80% and 40-50% of hair growth rates, respectively. The rate of hair growth of LP-2-applied group was lower than other applied groups (20-30%). In H/E staining, Numerous hair folicles and hair shafts were observed in Et-1-applied group and other groups showed lower level of hair folicles and hair shafts formation than Et-1-applied group, Conclusion : Et-1 formulation showed highest hair growth activity than other ethosome and liposome formulations entrapped DL-HGF.
This study was designed to investigate the effects of ethyl acetate(EtOAc) fraction of pine (Pinus densiflora Sieb et Zucc) needle on cholesterol and lipofuscin(LF) accumulations, acetylcholine(ACh) and its related enzyme activities such as choline acetyltransferase(ChAT) and acetylcholinesterase(AChE), and monoamine oxidase-B(MAO-B) activity, which destroyed the catecholamine related neurotransmitters in brain membranes of Sprague- Dawley (SD) rats. Male SD rats were fed basic diets (control group) and experimental diets (EtOAc-25, EtOAc-50 and EtOAc-100) for 45 days. Cholesterol accumulations in mitocholndria and microsomes were significantly inhibited (11.8-12.1% and 9.6-13.0%, respectvely) in EtOAc-50 and EtOAc-100 groups. ACh levels and ChAT activities were significantly increased about 10% in membranes of EtOAc-100 group compared with control group. AChE activities were significantly increased about 8 -12% in membranes of EtOAc-50 and EtOAc-100 groups compared with control group. MAO-B activities were significantly inhibited about 10% in membrane of EtOAc-l00 group compared with control group. These results suggest that ethyl acetate fraction of pine needle may play an effective role in inhibiting cholesterol and improving a membrane fluidity, and learning and memory impairments. Purpose: This study was conducted in order to investigate the diuretic effects of Erythritol (ET) salt on urinary electrolyte excretion in Sprague-Dawley Rats. Methods: Animals were divided into two groups: Salt group (n = 7) and Salt + ET fed group (n = 7). Animals were provided food and water ad libitum. Supplements were administered orally to animals for one week. Results: Body weights were not statistically different between groups either on Day 1 or Day 7. However, water consumption of the Salt + ET group was significantly higher than that of the Salt group on Day 1 and Day 7. Urine volume of the Salt + ET group was approximately 27% and 38% higher than that of the Salt group on Day 1 and Day 7. In addition, we found that the total amounts of urinary electrolytes, such as sodium and potassium, of the Salt + ET group were significantly higher than those of the Salt group on Day 7. We also found that serum electrolyte concentrations did not differ between two groups. These results demonstrated that salt intake with ET was effective in increasing urinary electrolyte excretion, which might be caused by higher water intake and diuretic effect inhibiting reabsorption of water, sodium, and potassium in renal tubules. Conclusion: The results suggest that short-term supplementation of ET salt can be a potential diuretic agent by inhibiting sodium and potassium reabsorption and inducing loss of water.

The hepatoprotective effect of ethanol extract from Hovenia dulcis fruit (HD) against ethanol-induced oxidative damage was investigated. Ethanol-induced reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation and liver damage on HepG2/2E1 cells were protected by $100{\mu}g/mL$ ethanolic extract from HD. Male C57BL/6 mice were divided into 3 groups; control (NC), ethanol (ET), ethanol plus 1 g/kg body weight ethanolic extract of HD (ET-HD). The activities of serum alanine amintransferase (ALT), aspartate aminotransferase (AST), and alkaline phosphatase (ALP) were significantly increased in ethanol-treated group. However, ET-HD group showed protective effect by lowering serum activities. The ET group markedly decreased the activities of catalase (CAT), superoxide dismutase (SOD), and glutathione-s-transferase (GST) with the reduced level of glutathione (GSH) in liver. On the other hand, ET-HD group increased the activities of SOD and GST, and the level of GSH. Lipid peroxidation level, which was increased after ethanol administration, was significantly reduced in ET-HD group. Based upon these results, it could be assumed that ethanolic extract of HD protected the liver against ethanol-induced oxidative damage by possibly inhibiting the suppression of antioxidant activity and reducing the rate of lipid peroxidation in vitro and in vivo. Therefore, extract of Hovenia dulcis fruit might be used as a protective agent for ethanol-induced hepatic damages.
The aim of this study was to compare the response and their outcome of superovulation induction protocol in IVF-ET program. One hundued seventy seven infertile women were stimulated by FSH/hMG(group I, N=128), clomiphene citrate/hMG(group II, N=51), and hMG(group III, N=18) for the purpose of ovulation induction. The results were as follows; 1. The mean ages of patients were $31.9{\pm}3.8$ in group I, $30.6{\pm}3.3$ in group II, and $29.3{\pm}2.5$ in group III. 2. The day of hCG administration was $11.1{\pm}1.8$ in group I, $12.1{\pm}2.0$ in group II, and $13.7{\pm}6.8$ in group III. The hCG administration day of group III was significantly delayed compared with that of group I (p<0.001). 3. The terminal E2 pattern in group II was different from those of group I and III, but there was no significant difference. 4. The mean numbers of mature eggs aspirated were $5.5{\pm}3.8$ in group I, $5.0{\pm}3.3$ in group II, and $5.6{\pm}5.4$ in group III. There was no significant differences in the mean numbers of mature eggs retrieved among the three groups. 5. The fertilization rate of eggs was significantly higher in group II (67.9%) than that of group I (52.2%)(p<0.001). 6. The cleavage rate of group I (67.0%) was significantly lower than those of group II (93.2%) and group III (95.8%) (p<0.0001). 7. The mean numbers of embryos transfered were $3.3{\pm}1.4$ in group I, $3.1{\pm}1.3$ in group II, and $3.2{\pm}1.6$ in group III and the ET rate was 69.0% in group I, 77.3% in group II, and 100% in group III. There was significant difference in ET rate between group I and group III (p<0.005). 8. The pregnancy rates per OPU cycle or ET cycle were not significantly different among the three groups, but delivered and ongoing pregnancy rates were significantly different between group I (36.8%) and group II (p<88.8%) (p<0.05).
Objectives Ethanol is a potent inhibitor of muscle protein synthesis. Muscle mass is regulated by the balance between rates of protein synthesis and protein breakdown. Both acute and chronic alcohol consumption inhibits synthesis to a greater extent than degradation. Protein synthesis is more intensely decreased in type II fibers than in type I fibers. Apoptosis has been shown to occur frequently in a variety of tissues in response to chronic alcohol feeding. Increased muscle fiber apoptosis has been shown in alcoholics with myopathy. Pueraria radix has been used for many disorders such as fevers, gastrointestinal disorders, muscle aches, allergies, respiratory problems, skin problems, high blood pressure, migraine headaches, lowering cholesterol and treating chronic alcoholism. We therefore tested the hypothesis that oral treatment with Pueraria radix could reduce the ethanol-induced muscle atrophy. Methods Young male Sprague-Dawley rats were orally given 25% ethanol (5 ml/kg, body weight) daily with Ethanol for 4 weeks. Normal group was similarly administrated with saline. The Rats of Pueraria radix treated group (EtOH+PR) were orally administrated Pueraria radix water extract, and rats of EtOH group were given with the vehicle only. After 4 week, the morphology of gastrocnemius and plantaris muscles were assessed by hematoxylin and eosin staining. The immunoreactivities of pre-apoptotic BAX and anti-apoptotic Bcl-2 proteins were also measured. Results The muscles from rats of EtOH group represented a significant reduction in average cross section area compared to Normal group. EtOH+PR group had increased fiber compared to the EtOH group. Moreover, to investigate the ethanol-induced muscular apoptosis, the immunohistochemical analysis of Bax and Bcl-2 was carried out. The treatment with Pueraria radix (EtOH+PR) significantly decreased BAX expression and increased Bcl-2 expression 4 weeks after ethanol administration when compared with Normal group. Conclusions These results suggest that Pueraria radix water extract has protective effects on chronic alcohol induced myopathy.
