This work focuses on the effects of crack free friction on Mode II stress intensity factors, $K_{II}$, for a vertical surface crack in a two-dimensional finite element model of TiN/steel subject to rolling contact. Results indicate that maximum $K_{II}$ values, which occur when the load is adjacent to the crack, may be significantly reduced in the presence of crack face friction. The reduction is more significant for thick coatings than for thin. Crack extension and increased layer thickness result in increased $K_{II}$ values. The effect of crack face friction on compressive $K_I$ values appears negligible. Comparative results are presented for $MoS_2/steel$ and diamond-like carbon(DLC)/Ti systems.

Aiming at nondestructive evaluation of defect with high accuracy and resolution, ICFPD(Induced Current Focusing Potential Drop) technique was newly developed. This technique can be applied for locating and sizing of defects in components with not only simple shape such as plain surface but also more complex shape and geometry such as curved surface and dissimilar joing. This paper describes the principle of ICFPD technique and also the results of 2-dimensional surface crack in ferromagnetic metal(A508 Cl. III steel) and paramagnetic metal (pure aluminum and stainless 304 steel) measured by this technique. Results are that surface defects in each specimen are detected with the difference of potential drop, and potential drops are distributed a similar shape for each metal and each depth. The normalized potential drop ( $V_{\delta}$2/$^{t}$ / $V_{{\delta} 2}$$^{-1}$) max. in the vicinity of defect is varied with the depth of defect. Therefore, ICFPD technique can be used for the evaluation of defect not only in ferromagnetic metal but also in paramagnetic steel..
In case of rough contact fatigue, the accurate calculation of surface tractions is essential to the prediction of crack initiation life. Accurate Surface tractions influencing shear stress amplitude can be obtained by contact analysis based on the morphology of contact surfaces. In this study, to simulate rough contact under sliding condition, gaussian rough surface generated numerically in the previous study was used and to calculate clack initiation life in the substrate, dislocation pileup theory was used.

This paper presents the implementation of a crack tracking mobile robot. The crack tracking robot is built for tracking cracks on the pavement. To track cracks, crack must be detected by laser and camera sensors. Laser sensor projects laser on the pavement to detect the discontinuity on the surface and the camera captures the image to find the crack position. Then the robot is commanded to follow the crack. To detect crack position correctly, neural network is used to minimize the positional errors of the captured crack position obtained by transformation from 2 dimensional images to 3 dimensional images.

This paper describes a versatile finite element technique which has been used to investigate of wide range of structural defects of practical importance. The procedure automatically remeshes the three-dimensional finite element model during the stages of crack growth. Problems analyzed to date include the surface cracks in leak-before-break situations, the development of quarter-elliptical corner defects, planar semi-elliptical surface defects and the fatigue growth of defects.

The reactor pressure vessel is usually cladded with stainless steel to prevent corrosion and radiation embrittlement. Number of subclad cracks may be found during an in-service-inspection due to the presence of cladding. It is specified, in ASME Sec. XI, that a subclad crack is characterized as a surface crack when the thickness of the clad is less than 40% of the crack depth. This condition is provided to keep the crack integrity evaluation conservative. In order to refine the fracture assessment procedures for such subclad cracks under a pressurized thermal shock condition, three dimensional finite element analyses are applied for various subclad cracks existing under cladding. A total of 36 crack geometries are analyzed, and the results are compared with those for surface cracks. The resulting stress intensity factors for subclad cracks are 6 to 44% less than those for surface cracks. It is proven that the flaw characterization condition as specified in ASME Sec. XI can be overly conservative for some subclad cracks.
When a crack exists under a residual stress, for example in welds, the crack can be closed and it shows non symmetric behavior for tension and compression. Ultrasonic detection method for those nonlinear cracks has been developed recently. The method uses the higher order harmonics generating at the crack surface. In this study, parameter study was carried out for the analysis of the harmonics generation at a nonlinear contact interface as a preliminary study for general 3-dimensional cracks. One-dimensional problem with simple bilinear behavior for the contacting surface was considered. The amplitude of second harmonic to the fundamental wave was obtained for various stiffness ratios, incident frequencies, and the contacting layer thicknesses.

This paper describes a fuzzy-based system for analyzing the stress intensity factors (SIFs) of three-dimensional (3D) cracks. 3D finite element method(FEM) was used to obtain the SIF for subsurface cracks and surface cracks existing in inhomogeneous materials. A geometry model, i.e. a solid containing one or several 3D cracks is defined. Several distributions of local node density are chosen, and then automatically superposed on one another over the geometry model by using the fuzzy theory. Nodes are generated by the bucketing method, and ten-noded quadratic tetrahedral solid elements are generated by the Delaunay triangulation techniques. The singular elements such that the mid-point nodes near crack front are shifted at the quarter-points, and these are automatically placed along the 3D crack front. The complete FE model is generated, and a stress analysis is performed. The SIFs are calculated using the displacement extrapolation method. The results were compared with those surface cracks in homogeneous materials. Also, this system is applied to analyze cladding effect of surface cracks in inhomogeneous materials.
The reliable stress intensity factor analysis is required for fracture mechanics design or safety evaluation of mechanical joints at which cracks often initiate and grow. It has been reported that cracks in mechanical joints usually nucleate as corner cracks at the faying surface of joints and grow as elliptical arc through cracks. In this paper, three dimensional finite element analyses are performed for elliptical arc through cracks in mechanical joints. Thereafter stress intensity factors along elliptical crack front including two surface points are determined by the virtual crack closure technique. Virtual crack closure technique is a method to calculate stress intensity factor using the finite element analysis and can be applied to non-orthogonal mesh. As a result, the effects of clearance on the stress intensity factor are investigated and crack shape are then predicted.
Nondestructive evaluation (NDE) is an important task of civil engineering structure monitoring and inspection, but minor damage such as small cracks in local structure is difficult to observe. If cracks continued expansion may cause partial or even overall damage to the structure. Therefore, monitoring and detecting the structure in the early stage of crack propagation is important. The crack detection technology based on machine vision has been widely studied, but there are still some problems such as bad recognition effect for small cracks. In this paper, we proposed a deep learning method based on sweep signals to evaluate concrete surface crack with a width less than 1 mm. Two convolutional neural networks (CNNs) are used to analyze the one-dimensional (1D) frequency sweep signal and the two-dimensional (2D) time-frequency image, respectively, and the probability value of average damage (ADPV) is proposed to evaluate the minor damage of structural. Finally, we use the standard deviation of energy ratio change (ERVSD) and infrared thermography (IRT) to compare with ADPV to verify the effectiveness of the method proposed in this paper. The experiment results show that the method proposed in this paper can effectively predict whether the concrete surface is damaged and the severity of damage.
