  • In this study, quasi-3D inundation flow simulations were conducted for a simplified subway station configuration. The effects of variations in rainwater inflow locations and discharge were investigated, analyzing the resulting inundation flow patterns and flood risk. The inundation simulation results calculated the incipient velocities for slipping and toppling accidents to assess pedestrian safety. The results indicated that velocities exceeding the incipient velocity for slipping accidents mainly occurred on the flooded staircase. Meanwhile, velocities surpassing the incipient toppling accidents were observed around the staircase and the corridor near the staircase leading to B2F. This observation is consistent with the results from the specific force distribution analysis. To provide detailed flood risk assessments, the Flood Hazard Degree (FD) was applied with four levels of criteria, along with the Flood Intensity Factor (FIF). The results demonstrated that FD identified a broader area at risk of flood-induced consequences compared to FIF. When comparing the different inundation risk assessment methods, the specific force method tended to overestimate the risk area, whereas FIF tended to underestimate it. Furthermore, among all assessment methods, the influence of rainwater discharge was found to have a more dominant effect on flood risk assessment compared to the number of rainwater inflow locations. Additionally, the direction of inundation flow influenced the assessed risk, with collision-induced flow patterns leading to higher flood risk than those with identical flow directions.

  • Recently due to the typhoon and extreme rainfall induced by abnormal weather and climate change, the probability of severe damage to human life and property is rapidly increasing. Thus it is necessary to create adequate and reliable flood risk map in preparation for those natural disasters. The study area is Seo-gu in Daegu which is located near Geumho river, one of the tributaries of Nakdong river. Inundation depth and velocity at each time were calculated by applying FLUMEN model to the target area of interest, Seo-gu in Daegu. And the research of creating flood risk map was conducted according to the Downstream Hazard Classification Guidelines of USBR. The 2-dimensional inundation analysis for channels and protected lowland with FLUMEN model was carried out with the basic assumption that there's no levee failure against 100 year precipatation and inflow comes only through the overflowing to the protected lowland. The occurrence of overflowing was identified at the levee of Bisan-dong located in Geumho watershed. The level of risk was displayed for house/building residents, drivers and pedestrians using information about depth and velocity of each node computed from the inundation analysis. Once inundation depth map and flood risk map for each region is created with this research method, emergency action guidelines for residents can be systemized and it would be very useful in establishing specified emergency evacuation plans in case of levee failure and overflowing resulting from a flood.

  • In the flood plain, river facilities such as sports facilities and ecological park are builded up since the late 2000s. The recent increase of rainfall intensity and flood frequency results in the immersions of parks and river facilities located in the flood plain. Therefore it is necessary to perform the numerical analysis for the extreme rain storm in the flood plain. In this study, to analyze the hydraulic impact by lowering and rising of the water level at flood plain, Both the FaSTMECH, which is a quasi-unsteady flow analysis model to be used for simulating the wet and dry, and the Nays2D, which is unsteady flow analysis model, are used in this study. Also, the flow velocity distribution and the inundation are compared over a period of the typhoon. As a result, the flow velocity distribution at flood plain showed very low values compared to the flow rate in the main channel. This means that the problem of sedimentation is more important than that of erosion in the flood plain.

  • The objective of this study is to develop a two-dimensional (2D) flood model that can perform accurate flood analysis with simple input data. The 2D flood inundation models currently used to create flood forecast maps require complex input data and grid generation tools. This sometimes requires a lot of time and effort for flood modeling, and there may be difficulties in constructing input data depending on the situation. In order to compensate for these shortcomings, in this study, a grid-based model that can derive accurate and rapid flood analysis by reflecting correct topography as simple input data was developed. The calculation efficiency was improved by extending the existing 2×2 sub-grid model to a 5×5. In order to examine the accuracy and applicability of the model, it was applied to the Gamcheon Basin where both urban and river flooding occurred due to Typhoon Rusa. For efficient flood analysis according to user's selection, flood wave propagation patterns, accuracy and execution time according to grid size and number of sub-grids were investigated. The developed model is expected to be highly useful for flood disaster mapping as it can present the results of flooding analysis for various situations, from the flood inundation map showing accurate flooding to the flood risk map showing only approximate flooding.

  • In this study, the simulation and analysis for the inundation in a coastal urban area according to the storm surge height are carried out using a 2-D numerical model. The target area considered in this study is a part of the new town of Changwon City, Gyungsangnam-do and this area was extremely damaged due to the storm surge generated during the period of the typhoon "Maemi" in 2003. For the purpose of the verification of the numerical model applied in this study, the simulated results are compared and analyzed with the temporal storm surge heights observed at the tide station in Masan bay and inundation traces in an urban area. Moreover, in order to investigate the influence of super typhoons possible in the future, the results simulated with the storm surge heights increased 1.25 and 1.5 times compared with those observed during the period of typhoon "Maemi" are compared and analyzed.

  • The frequency of urban floods is recently increased as a consequence of climate change and haphazard development in urban area. To mitigate and prevent the flood damage, we generally utilized a numerical model to investigate the causes and risk of urban flood. Contrary to general flood inundation model simulating only the surface flow, the model needs to consider flow of the sewer network system like SWMM and ILLUDAS. However, this kind of model can not consider the interaction between the surface flow and drainage network. Therefore, we tried to evaluate the impact of bidirectional interaction between sewer and surface flow in urban flooding analysis based on simulations using the quasi-interacted model and the interacted model. As a general quasi-interacted model, SWMM5 and FLUMEN are utilized to analyze the flow of drainage network and simulate the inundation area, respectively. Then, FLO-2D is introduced to consider the interaction between the surface flow and sewer system. The two method applied to the biggest flood event occurred in July 2011 in Sadang area, South Korea. Based on the comparison with observation data, we confirmed that the model considering the interaction the sewer network and surface flow, showed a good agreement than the quasi-interacted model.

  • One- and two-dimensional coupling model has been developed to analyze the flood inundation aspect of protected lowland. One-dimensional model solves the Saint-Venant equations by the Preissmann method, and two-dimensional model solves the shallow water equation by the integrated finite difference method. The coupling model approximates unsteady supercritical and subcritical flow, backwater flooding effects, and escaping and returning flow from two-dimensional flow model to channel system. The model has been applied to the levee failure in the Nakdong river during September 13 through 15, 2000. Velocity distributions and inundated depths were presented to demonstrate model simulation results.

  • The study used the simplified flooding analysis model, SIMOD, to distribute the total flood discharge by time, so research on flooding in urban areas can be conducted. The conventional flooding analysis models have limitations in constructing input data and take a long time for analysis. However, SIMOD is useful because it supports rapid decision-making process using quick modeling based on simple hydrological data, such as topography and inflow flood of the study area, to analyze submerged routes formed by flooding. Therefore, the study used the SIMOD model to analyze flooding in urban areas before conducting a comparative study with the outputs from FLO-2D, which is one of the conventional flooding analysis models, to identify the model's applicability. Seongseoje was selected as the study area, as it is located downstream the Geumho river where streams flow in the adjacent areas, and dikes are high enough to apply the "Overflow and Break" scenario for urban areas. With regard to topography, the study applied DEM data for the conventional flooding analysis and DSM data to represent urban building communities, distribution of roads, etc. Input flood discharge was calculated by applying the rectangular weir equation under the bank and break scenario through a 200-year return period of a design flood level. Comparative analysis was conducted in a flooded area with a simulation time of 1-24 hours. The time for the 24-hour simulation in SIMOD was less than 7 minutes. Compared with FLO-2D, the difference in flooded areas was less than 20%. Furthermore, the study identified the need for topography data using DSM for urban areas, as the analysis result that applies DSM showed the influence of roads and buildings.
