Further Improvements on Bose's 2D Stability Test

  • This paper proposes some further improvements on N.K. Bose's 2D stability test for polynomials with real coefficients by revealing symmetric properties of the polynomials, resultants occurring in the test and by generalizing Sturm's method. The improved test can be fulfilled by a totally algebraic algorithm with a finite number of steps and the computational complexity is largely reduced as it involves only certain real variable polynomials with degrees not exceeding half of their previous complex variable counterparts. Nontrivial examples for 2D polynomials having both numerical and literal coefficients are also shown to illustrate the computational advantage of the proposed method.

A new suggestion for determining 2D porosities in DEM studies

  • In discrete element modeling, 2D software has been widely used in order to gain further insights into the fundamental mechanisms with less computational time. The porosities used in 2D DEM studies should be determined with appropriate approaches based on 3D laboratory porosities. This paper summarizes the main approaches for converting porosities from 3D to 2D for DEM studies and theoretical evaluations show that none of the current approaches can be widely used in dealing with soil mechanical problems. Therefore, a parabolic equation and a criterion have been suggested for the determination of 2D porosities in this paper. Moreover, a case study has been used to validate that the 2D porosity obtained from the above suggestion to be rational with both the realistic contact force distribution in the specimen and the good agreement of the DEM simulation results of direct shear tests with the corresponding experimental data. Therefore, the parabolic equation and the criterion are suggested for the determination of 2D porosities in a wide range of polydisperse particle systems, especially in dealing with soil mechanical problems.

  • In this paper, we propose a constructive realization procedure for 2D systems which may lead to a Fornasini-Marchesini local state-space model with much lower order than the existing realization procedure given by Bisiacco et al. Nontrivial examples are illustrated and the conditions for minimal realization are also discussed.

  • This paper discusses the problem of positive real control for uncertain 2-D linear discrete time singular Roesser models (2-D SRM) with time-invariant norm-bounded parameter uncertainty. The purpose of this study is to design a state feedback controller such that the resulting closed-loop system is acceptable, jump modes free and stable, and achieves the extended strictly positive realness for all admissible uncertainties. A version of positive real lemma for the 2-D SRM is given in terms of linear matrix inequalities (LMIs). Based on the lemma, a sufficient condition for the solvability of the positive real control problem is derived in terms of bilinear matrix inequalities (BMIs) and an iterative procedure for solving the BMIs is proposed.

  • This paper investigates two discrete time queueing inventory models with positive service time and lead time. Customers arrive according to a Bernoulli process and service time and lead time follow geometric distributions. The first model under discussion based on replenishment of order upto S policy where as the second model is based on order placement by a fixed quantity Q, where Q = S - s, whenever the inventory level falls to s. We analyse this queueing systems using the matrix geometric method and derive an explicit expression for the stability condition. We obtain the steady-state behaviour of these systems and several system performance measures. The influence of various parameters on the systems performance measures and comparison on the cost analysis are also discussed through numerical example.

  • Nowadays there are practically no mathematical courses in which Computer Algebra Systems (CAS) programs, such as MATHEMATlCA, Maple, and TI-89/92, are not used to some extent. However, generally the usage of these programs is reduced to illustration of computing processes: calculation of integrals, differentiation, solution of various equations, etc. This is obtained by usage of standard command of type: Solve [...] in MATHEMATICA. At the same time the main difficulties arise at teaching nonconventional mathematical courses such as coding theory, discrete mathematics, cryptography, Scientific computing, which are gaining the increasing popularity now. Now it is impossible to imagine a modern engineer not having basic knowledge in discrete mathematics, Cryptography, coding theory. Digital processing of signals (digital sound, digital TV) has been introduced in our lives.

  • In this paper, we discuss a discrete-time queueing system with dyadic server control policy that combines workload control and multiple vacations. Customers arrive at the system with Bernoulli arrival process. If there is no customer to serve in the system, an idle single server spends a vacation of discrete random variable V and returns. The server repeats the vacation until the total service time of waiting customers exceeds the predetermined workload threshold D. In this paper, we derived the steady-state workload distribution of a discrete-time queueing system which is operating under a more realistic and flexible server control policy. Mean workload is also derived as a performance measure. The results are basis for the analysis of system performance measures such as queue lengths, waiting time, and sojourn time.

Age Invariant Face Recognition Based on DCT Feature Extraction and Kernel Fisher Analysis

  • The aim of this paper is to examine the effectiveness of combining three popular tools used in pattern recognition, which are the Active Appearance Model (AAM), the two-dimensional discrete cosine transform (2D-DCT), and Kernel Fisher Analysis (KFA), for face recognition across age variations. For this purpose, we first used AAM to generate an AAM-based face representation; then, we applied 2D-DCT to get the descriptor of the image; and finally, we used a multiclass KFA for dimension reduction. Classification was made through a K-nearest neighbor classifier, based on Euclidean distance. Our experimental results on face images, which were obtained from the publicly available FG-NET face database, showed that the proposed descriptor worked satisfactorily for both face identification and verification across age progression.

  • In this paper, we studied a discrete-time queuing system that operates under a mixed situation of D-policy and T-policy, one of the representative server control policies in queuing theory. A single server serves customers arriving by Bernoulli arrival process on a first-in, first-out basis(FIFO). If there are no customers to serve in the system, the server goes on vacation and returns, until the total service time (i.e., total amount of workload) of waiting customers exceeds predetermined workload threshold D. The operation of the system covered in this study can be used to model the efficient resource utilization of mobile devices using secondary batteries. In addition, it is significant in that the steady state waiting time and system sojourn time of the queuing system under a flexible mixed control policy were derived within a unified framework.

PAPR Evaluation and Analysis of Candidate Waveforms Using DFT Spreading for 5G Mobile Communications (DFT Spreading을 사용한 5세대 이동통신 후보 변조기술의 PAPR 평가 및 분석)

  • UFMC(Universal-Filtered Multi-carrier) and FBMC(Filter Bank Multi-carrier) system are receiving attention as candidate waveforms for 5G mobile communication system. But, these systems have high PAPR(Peak to Average Power Ratio) problem because these systems use a number of subcarrier. In this paper, we propose DFT(Discrete Fourier Transform) spreading based DFT-s(spreading)-UFMC system and DFT-s-FBMC system in order to overcome the PAPR drawback. In order to evaluate PAPR performance of the proposed systems, we design and simulate OFDM(Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing), UFMC, FBMC, DFT-s-OFDM, DFT-s-UFMC, DFT-s-FBMC system. As simulation results, each PAPR performance of DFT-s-OFDM system, DFT-s-UFMC system, and DFT-s-FBMC system rise by 2.7 dB, 2.8 dB, and 1.1 dB respectively by DFT spreading technique.
