The angular electrostatic microactuator using skewed electrode array (SEA) scheme was proposed. The moving and fixed electrodes are arranged to make the driving force perpendicular to the rotating moment of arm. By changing the electrode overlap length, the magnitude of electrostatic force and stable displacement will be changed. In order to optimize the design, electrostatic FE analysis were carried out and the empirical force model was established for SEA. Simulation was performed to make the comparison between conventional actuators and SEA. The proposed SEA generates actuating torque 2 times greater than a comb-drive and stable actuator displacement 40% greater than a parallel plate type actuator. The angular electrostatic microactuator using skewed SEA scheme was designed and fabricated using SoG process.

To improve the driving sensitivity of an optical pickup actuator for high density and high speed drive, we present a new actuator design using multipolar flux-density distribution by magnetic materials and Nd-Fe-B sintered magnets. We expect this actuator to use in 3-axis actuator fur tilt compensation as well as conventional 2-axis actuator. The electromagnetic field analysis applying 3-D FEM was performed and several samples were actually tested. From comparing simulated data with experimental results, we verified theaccuracy of the simulation and the superiority of the presented method.
Hydroforming is the technology that utilizes hydraulic pressure to form tube or sheet materials into desired shapes inside die cavities. Tube hydroforming provides a number of advantages over the conventional stamping process, including fewer secondary operations, weight reduction, assembly simplification, adaptability to forming of complex structural components and improved structural strength. In many case, hydroformed parts have to be structurally joined at some point. Therefore it is useful if the hydroformed automotive parts can be given a localized attachment flange. In this study for the numerical process design FE analysis was performed with DYNAFORM 5.5. Die parting angle and circumferential expansion ratio was optimized. With optimized condition, bulge and hydroforming experiments to form flange were performed. Forming characteristic at various pressure conditions was analyzed and optimized internal pressure condition was evaluated. The results show that flanged parts can be successfully produced by tube hydroforming process.

In this study, the antioxidative effects and active component analysis of 50% ethanol extract, ethyl acetate fraction and aglycone fraction obtained from Prunella vulgaris L. were investigated. The free radical scavenging activities ($FSC_{50}$) was investigated at 50% ethanol extract ($15.25{\mu}g/mL$), ethyl acetate fraction ($8.68{\mu}g/mL$), and aglycone fraction ($8.25{\mu}g/mL$) respectively. Reactive oxygen species (ROS) scavenging activities ($OSC_{50}$) in $Fe^{3+}-EDTA/H_2O_2$ system using the luminol-dependent chemiluminescence assay was investigated at 50% ethanol extract ($4.68{\mu}g/mL$), ethyl acetate fraction ($1.00{\mu}g/mL$), and aglycone fraction($1.02{\mu}g/mL$) respectively. In the cellular protective effect against $^1O_2$ induced cellular damage of human erythrocytes, extract/fractions of P. vulgaris L. were increased in a concentration dependent manner($1{\sim}25{\mu}g/mL$). Especially, ${\tau}_{50}$ of aglycone fraction at concentrations of $25{\mu}g/mL$ showed the most protective effects at 337.9 min. It's showed nine times higher (+)-${\alpha}$-tocopherol (${\tau}_{50}=38.7min$) as typical antioxidant in the $^1O_2$-induced photohemolysis of human erythrocytes. TLC and HPLC were used to analyse active components in the ethyl acetate fraction and aglycone fraction of P. vulgaris L. In ethyl acetate fraction, caffeic acid, rosmarinic acid, quercetin 3-${\beta}$-D-glucoside, rutin, kaempferol-3-O-rutinoside, astragalin (kaempferol-3-O-glucoside) were identified. In aglycone fraction, caffeic acid, rosmarinic acid, quercetin, kaempferol were identified. These results indicated that extract/fraction of P. vulgaris L. is may be used in cosmetics industry as natural antioxidants by quenching and/or scavenging $^1O_2$ and other ROS, and protecting cellular membranes.
The production of high-precision micro-sized screws, used to fasten parts of micro devices, generally utilizes a cold thread-rolling process and two flat dies to create the teeth. The process is fairly complex, involving parameters such as die shape, die alignment, and other process variables. Thus, up-front finite-element(FE) simulation is often used in the system design procedure. The final goal of this paper is to produce high-precision screw with a diameter of $800{\mu}m$ and a thread pitch of $200{\mu}m$ (M0.8${\times}$P0.2) by a cold thread rolling process. Part I is a first-stage effort, in which FE simulation is used to establish process parameters for thread rolling to produce micro-sized screws with M1.4${\times}$P0.3, which is larger than the ultimate target screw. The material hardening model was first determined through mechanical testing. Numerical simulations were then performed to find the effects of such process parameters as friction between work piece and dies, alignment between dies and material. The final shape and dimensions predicted by simulation were compared with experimental observation.
A simplified material model, which was efficiently implemented in a three-dimensional finite solid element (3D FE) analysis for wood was developed. The bi-linear elasto-plastic anisotropic material theory was adopted to describe constitutive relations of wood in three major directions including longitudinal, radial and tangential direction. The assumption of transverse isotropy was made to reduce the requisite 27 material constants to 6 independent constants including elastic moduli, yield stresses and Poisson's ratios in the parallel, and perpendicular to grain directions. The results of Douglas fir compression tests in the three directions were compared to the 3D FE simulation incorporated with the wood material model developed in this study. Successful agreements of the results were found in the load-deformation curves and the permanent deformations. Future works and difficulties expected in the advanced application of the model were discussed.
Objectives: The Korean Industrial Standard (KS) for sterile acupuncture needles was established in 2009 based on research on the quality control of acupuncture needles. We aimed to determine the quality of acupuncture needles available in South Korea in 2021 by examining their surface condition and chemical composition using field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS). Methods: In South Korea, there are 23 brands of acupuncture needles, and we examined 10-15 needles from each brand, resulting in a total of 285 needles. The microstructures of the needles were assessed by SEM. Using SEM images, we evaluated the acupuncture needle tips for the following defects/aspects: scratches, lumps, detached coating, bent tip, and tip sharpness. EDS was used to determine the chemical composition of the selected acupuncture needles. Results: Overall, 88.4% of 285 needles were found to have at least one type of abnormality. The most frequently observed abnormalities were scratches and dents on the surface (68.1%), followed by detached coating (63.2%), and lumps (61.8%); blunt tips were observed in about 24% of them. Of 252 needles with at least one defect, 86.9% had two or more types of defects. The ratio of the number of needles with any defect to that of needles without any defect varied among brands, ranging from 50% to 100%. Regarding foreign materials, higher proportions of Si and O were observed on the needles, indicating incomplete or detached silicone coating. Conclusion: The quality of acupuncture needles varied among brands, suggesting that further improvements can be made through various inspection methods.

A pilot scale biofilter pretreatment-microfiltration system (BF-MF) was operated to investigate the effect of biofilter treatment in fouling reduction of microfiltration. Biofiltration was expected to reduce the membrane fouling by removal of turbidity and metal oxides. The hollow-fiber MF module with a nominal pore size of 0.1$\mu$m and a surface area of 8m$^2$ was submerged in a filtration tank and microfiltration was operated at a constant flux of 0.5 m/d. Biofiltration using polypropylene pellets was performed at a high filtration velocity of 320 m/d. Two experimental setups composed of MF and BF/MF, i.e., without and with biofilter pretreatment, were compared. Throughout the experimental period of 9 months, biofilter pretreatment was effective to reduce the membrane fouling, which was proved by the result of time variations of trans-membrane pressure and backwash conditions. The turbidity removal rate by biofiltration varied between 40% to 80% due to the periodic washing for biofilter contactor and raw water turbidity. In addition to turbidity, metals, especially Mn, Fe and Al were removed effectively with average removal rates of 89.2%, 67.8% and 64.9%, respectively. Further analysis of foulants on the used membranes revealed that turbidity and metal removal by biofiltration was the major effect of biofiltration pretreatment against microfiltration fouling.

The design of sealing mechanisms of a manual pressure valve was analyzed with FE analysis for a hydrogen fuels charge and discharge system of FCEV. The damage prediction of the O-ring with respect to the material models of rubbers was calculated by the gap analysis of the backup ring and O-ring according to the internal pressure. Two kinds of the rubber material characteristic models were adopted to the O-ring. One was the linear elastic and the other was hyperelastic of Ogden $3^{rd}$ order model. The experimental data of urethane of Shore hardness 90 was utilized to the curve fitting of hyperelastic properties. It was found that the contact pattern of the backup ring was different in two models and the sealing mechanism was better in the case of the hyperelastic characteristic model.
It is difficult to estimate the properties of multilayered sheet because they are composed of one or more different materials. Plastic deformation behavior of the multilayered sheet is quite different as compared to each material individually. The deformation behavior of multilayered sheet should be investigated in order to prevent forming defects and to predict the properties of the formed part. In this study, the mechanical properties and formability of stainless steel-aluminum-magnesium multilayered sheet were investigated. The multilayered sheet needs to be deformed at an elevated temperature because of its poor formability at room temperature. Uniaxial tensile tests were performed at various temperatures and strain rates. Fracture patterns changed mainly at a temperature of $200^{\circ}C$. Uniform and total elongation of multilayered sheet increased to values greater than those of each material when deformed at $250^{\circ}C$. The limiting drawing ratio (LDR) was obtained using a circular cup deep drawing test to measure the formability of the multilayered sheet. A maximum value for the LDR of about 2 was achieved at $250^{\circ}C$, which is the appropriate forming temperature for the Mg alloy. Fracture patterns on a circular cup and thickness of formed part were predicted by a rigid-viscoplastic FEM analysis. Two kinds of modeling techniques were used to simulate deep drawing process of multilayered sheet. A single-layer FE-model, which combines the three different layers into a macroscopic single layer, predicted well the thickness distribution of the drawn cup. In contrast, the location and the time of fracture were estimated better with a multi-layer FE model, which used different material properties for each of the three layers.
