In this study, a solvothermal reaction to prepare nanocrystalline titania was carried out using $TiCl_4$ and mixed solvents of alcohol and water. The effects of the type and the composition of alcohol on the crystal structure and agglomeration of final $TiO_2$ products were investigated. The products were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) as well as scanning electron microscopy (SEM). In the solvothermal reaction using the n-butanol solutions with different volume ratios of n-butanol/water (100/0, 75/25, 50/50, 25/75, 0/100), the extent of agglomeration of obtained rutile $TiO_2$ was found to change with the volume ratio of n-butanol/water, and the n-butanol/water ratio of 75/25 revealed the best result for the preparation of well-dispersed nanocrystalline $TiO_2$ powders. The crystal phase of $TiO_2$ prepared through the solvothermal reaction changed with the type of alcohol in solvent (alcohol/water = 75/25). $TiO_2$ products obtained with the aqueous solutions of methanol, ethanol and isopropanol have an anatase phase, while that with n-butanol has a rutile phase. The results showed that, in the solvothermal reaction using both $TiCl_4$ as a starting material and the alcohol-water mixed solvents without any other additive, the enhancement of dispersion and control of crystal structure of $TiO_2$ products can be feasible by simply varying the composition and type of alcohol in the mixed solvents.
Pervaporation membrane for butanol separation was prepared by hybrid process. Plasma treatment of commercial poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS) membrane was attempted and combination of plasma treatment and PDMS solution coating on polysulfone, poly(ether imide) supports were also performed. Plasma treatment of PDMS membrane with hexane and silane group compounds was performed to increase the hydrophobicity of the surface, which enhanced the separation factor upto 12.5 at the expense of flux decrease down to $1.15kg/m^2{\cdot}hr$. Contact angle and relative sorption ratio were also related with hydrophobicity of the memrbane. Increase of PDMS prepolymer composition resulted in dense structure of coating layer with better separation factor. Effects of sequence of PDMS coating vs. plasma treatment were examined. It was found that plasma treatment with butanol and n-hexane plasma followed by PDMS coating showed better performance and vice versa for plasma treatment with hexamethyldisilane and hexamethyldisilazane.
In this article, new Gibbs free energy of mixing is derived when there are specific interactions between solvent-solute molecules and between solute-solute molecules in binary solutions. It is asssumed that a probability of specific interactions satisfies a binomial distribution. Using this Gibbs free energy of mixing, we investigate possible types of partial miscibilities and show that Ω-shaped temperature-composition phase diagrams can exist. We calculate Ω-shaped temperature-composition phase diagram of water-2-butanol system and compare that with result calculated by the method of Hino5 et al. and the experimental data.
Asymmetric membranes for pervaporation were prepared with poly sulfone and sulfonated poly sulfone in order to separate water from 90% by weight butanol solution. Chlorosulfonic acid was reacted with trimethylchlorosilane for using as a sulfonating agent. The prepared polymers were characterized with FT-IR and $^1H$-NMR. The thermal properties of the polymers were examined with DSC and TGA. Back titration method was used for the evaluation of the degree of sulfonation or the ion ex¬change capacity. N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone (NMP) and diethyleneglycol dimethyl ether (DGDE) cosolvent were used for the preparation of asymmetric membranes. The cross section and skin layer of the mem¬branes were examined with scanning electron michroscopy to investigate membrane structure formed with cosolvent composition in the casting solution. In this article, the selectivity of the dense films were not different from each other so much. However, the permeation rates were significantly increased as much as 80 times compared to that of dense film.
Separation of fructose from glucose-fructose mixture was studied by utilizing the solubility differences of both sugars in the mixed solvents of water and alcohols with or without the presence of NaCl and $CaCl_2$. Better separation of fructose was obtained in ethanol-water solvent than other solvent-water systems. The addition of NaCl to the ethanol-water solvent system improved the separation factor based on the relative composition of two sugars in the supernatant by twice. The change in feed composition from 50-50 mixture of glucose and fructose resulted in a worse separation factor. It was found in the present studies that the best separation of fructose (fructose 75%, glucose 25%) was achieved when NaCl and ethanol was slowly added to the solution containing 20% water, 40% fructose and 40% glucose to make up the final solution with the parts of ethanol 36 ml, water 4 ml, glucose 8 gm, fructose 8 gm and NaCl 0.25gm.
Electrospun of PVP (polyvinylpyrrolidone) ultra fine fibers were fabricated using various solvents including methanol, ethanol, 2-propanol, butanol, acetone, methylene chloride, and DMF, which possess different properties such as boiling point, dielectric constant, and dipole moment. Electrospun PVP fiber was influenced by viscosity, conductivity, and surface tension of spinning solution. Therefore, the electrospun PVP fiber was successfully prepared under critical conditions of viscosity > $0.114kg/m{\cdot}s$, conductivity > 1.02 mS/m, surface tension < 30.0 mN/m. In case of an ethanol solvent system, average diameter of PVP fiber increased from 1701 nm to 5454 nm as increased the applied voltage from 10 kV to 20 kV.
In the current study, antioxidant properties of extracts from different parts of Taraxacum officinale were determined by measuring the radical scavenging activity of 1,1-diphenyl-2-picryl hydrazyl(DPPH) and 2,2'-Azino-bis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) (ABTS). The antioxidant activity of aerial and root parts of this plant was measured in extracts obtained from various solvents, e.g., water, 50, 70, 100% ethanol, and hot-water. The hot-water extracts had the highest radical scavenging activities. A further study was conducted to determine the total antioxidant activity of hot-water extract fractions obtained from different solvents, e.g., chloroform, ethyl acetate, n-butanol, and water. The ethyl acetate fraction of this extract displayed the strongest DPPH and ABTS radical scavenging activity and the highest total phenolic contents. The inhibitory effect of individual solvent fractions on the production of nitric oxide in LPS-stimulated RAW 264.7 cells was measured. The results indicated that the ethyl acetate fraction of aerial and roots part extracts significantly reduced nitric oxide productions.
In this paper, polymer composite membranes and ceramic composite membranes were prepared in order to compare differences in pervaporation performances relative to the support layers. PVDF was used for the polymer support layers, and $a-Al_2O_3$ was used for the ceramic support layers. For active layer was coated for PDMS, which is a rubbery polymer. The characterization of membranes were analysed by SEM, contact angle, and XPS. We studied performances relative to the composite membrane support layers in the ABE mixture solutions. The results of the pervaporation, the flux of the ceramic composite membrane was shown to be $250.87g/m^2h$, which was higher than that of polymer composite membranes, at $195.64g/m^2h$. However, it was determined that the separation factor of the polymer composite membranes was 31.98 which were higher than that of the ceramic composite membranes, at 20.66.
The interaction of 4-alkylbenzoic acid isomers with the micellar system of TTAB (tetradecyltrimethylammonium bromide) was studied by the UV/Vis spectrophotometric method. The solubilization constants ($K_s$) of 4-alkylbenzoic acid isomers into the TTAB micellar system and the critical micelle concentration (CMC) of TTAB have been measured with the change of temperature. Various thermodynamic parameters have been calculated and analyzed from those measurements. The results show that the values of ${\Delta}G^o{_s}$ for the solubilization of all the isomers are negative and the values of ${\Delta}H^o{_s}$ and ${\Delta}S^o{_s}$ are all positive within the measured temperature range. The effects of additives (n-butanol and NaCl) on the solubilization of 4-alkylbenzoic acid isomers have been also measured. There was a great change on the values of $K_s$ and CMC simultaneously with these additives. From these changes we can postulate that the solubilization sites of 4-alkylbenzoic acids are the core or deep palisade region of the TTAB micelle.
Infrared absorption spectra of alkyl alcohols in the OH stretching region were obtained from varying the concentrations of alcohols in $CCl_4$. The OH stretching bands were broadened and shifted to lower frequencies due to the hydrogen-bond formation. Three bands were obtained from the breakdown of these bands by the simplex method. Each band was assigned to various types of hydrogen-bonded OH groups. The electronic structures and interaction energies of dimeric and trimeric alcohols were calculated by semi-empirical MO(CNDO/2, INDO) methods. These results were in good agreement with those of deconvoluted ir spectra. The EDA(electron donor-acceptor) effect of alkyl group on hydrogen-bond formation was in the decreasing order of butyl > propyl > ethyl > methyl group. On the other hand, the experimental results were in the order : propyl > ethyl > butyl > methyl group. This seemed to be ascribed to the bulkiness of butyl alcohol.
