  • This paper presents the quantitative damage assessment of granite taken from KAERI Underground Research Tunnel using acoustic emission (AE). The results determined showed the crack initiation and crack damage stress occurred at 48%, 72% of uniaxial compressive strength (UCS) and until the applied stress level was reached the crack damage stress, the damage degree was 0.06. When the applied stress exceeded 80%, 90% of UCS, the damage degree were 0.34, 0.06 and which were similar to those obtained from axial deformation modulus. The simply regression analysis was used to interpret the relationship of the two damage assessment techniques and the two were highly correlated ($R^2$=0.90). Therefore, damage degree based on the AE energy and mohr-coulomb failure criterion were adopted to predict the mechanical properties. As results, the axial deformation modulus, rock strength, internal friction angle, and cohesion of KURT rock were reduced 6%, 12%, 7%, and 3% until the applied stress was 70% of UCS. But when the applied stress reached 90% of UCS, the results were more reduced 69%, 72%, 62%, and 24%, respectively.

  • A simple numerical modelling technique is proposed for estimating the shear stress distribution in beams of framed tube structures with multiple internal tubes. The structures arc analysed using a continuum approach in which each tube is individually modelled by a tube beam that accounts for the flexural and shear deformations, as well as the shear lag effects. The numerical analysis of shear stress is based on the mathematical analogy in conjunction with the elastic theory By simplifying assumptions regarding the form of strain distributions in external and internal tubes, the shear stress distributions are expressed in terms of a series of lineal functions of the second moments of area of the structures and the corresponding geometric and material properties, as well as the applied loads. Previous studies for axial stresses and shear lag phenomenon are further developed lot the numerical analysis of shear stresses in the tubes. The simplicity and accuracy of the proposed method are demonstrated through the solutions of throe numerical examples.

  • In this study, friction angles on the surface of vertical rigid ground anchor in normally consolidated dry sand were measured by model pullout tests in laboratory. Friction angles were obtained from the normal and shear stresses measured along depth of the anchor stir face by attaching several 2-dimensional load cells. Model tests were conducted under the plane strain state and axial symmetric state. From the results of tests, it was concluded that the maximum friction angle on the anchor surface coincides nearly with the maximum angle of stress obliquity on the plane of zero-extension direction obtained by plane strain compression test. This result was made with regard to the strength anisotropy and stress dependency of sand. It showed that when angle of shear resistance of the sand is applied to the friction angle of the anchor surface, the design capacity could be less than the applied force, thus making the anchor unsafe.

  • The expanding copper mandrel test performed at three strain rates (3.2$\times$10E -5/s, 2.0$\times$10E-6/s and 1.2$\times$10E-7/s) over 553-873 K temperature range by varying the heating rates (8-1$0^{\circ}C$/s, 1-2$^{\circ}C$/s and 0.5$^{\circ}C$/s) in air and in vacuum (5$\times$10E-5 torr). The yield stress peak, the strain rate sensitivity minimum and the activation volume peaks could be explained in terms of the dynamic strain aging. The activation energy for dynamic strain aging obtained from the yield stress peak temperature and strain rate was 196 KJ/mol and this value was in good agreement with the activation energy for oxygen diffusion in $\alpha$-zirconium and Zircaloy-2 (207-220 KJ/mol). Therefore, oxygen atoms are responsible for the dynamic strain aging which appeared between 573 K and 673 K. The yield stress increase due to the oxidation was obtained by comparing the yield stress in air with that in vacuum and represented by the percentage increase of yield stress ( $\sigma$$^{a}$ $_{y}$ - $\sigma$$^{v}$ $_{y}$ / $\sigma$$^{v}$ $_{y}$ ). The slower the strain rate, the greater the percentage increase occurs. In order to estimate the yield stress of PWR fuel cladding material under the service environment, the yield stress in water was obtained by comparing the oxidation rate in air that in water assuming the relationship between the oxygen pick-up amount and the yield stress increase.

  • The various configuration of thin-shaped bevel gears are used usually for such as main reduction gear of the hovercraft. But the reasonable and concise guide to thedesign of the se bevel gears is not yet obtained, since the tooth of bevel gear has complex form. The purpose of these investigation is to be establish the design guide and to propose the desirable configuration form for thin-shaped straight bevel gear. In this report, the desirable configuration is examined experimentally by clearing up the effect of web and rim thickness, rim support condition upon the load distribution and root stress distribution along the tooth trace. The results are summarized as follows. (1) The crowning of tooth trace exerts a significant effect on the root stress distribution of thin-shaped bevel gear. (2) As the desirable configuration of the thin-shaped bevel gear, it is to be recommended that the rim is supported at the heel side of tooth trace. (3) But, as special type, it is desirable that the rim is supported at the toe side.

  • Two stroke low speed diesel engines that have many advantages such as high thermal efficiency and durability have been widely used for marine engine. However, it is also true that many problems have occurred due to the high explosion pressure and severe operating environment. Especially problems of shaft damage etc. intensively occurred due to the phenomenon of crankshaft exceeding the allowable stress, including the shaft vibration of the engine model in the early stage. In this study, the crankshaft fracture phenomenon of early engine model was evaluated and analyzed by using up-to-date torsional vibration calculation program and measurement instrument. And this was numerically shown.

  • This paper presents an efficient dynamic modeling method for multi-stepped rotor system using effective spring elements to take into account the structural weakening effect due to the steps. This paper demonstrates that the Timoshenko shaft model give rise to a significant error in the case of multi-stepped rotors. An effective bending spring model is introduced to represent the structural weakening effect in the presence of steps. The proposed modeling method is validated through a series of simulations and experiments. Finally, a spindle is dealt with as an analysis example.

  • Objective: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the stress distribution in bone and displacement distribution of the miniscrew according to the length and number of the miniscrews used for the fixation of miniplate, and the direction of orthodontic force. Methods: Four types of finite element models were designed to show various lengths (6 mm, 4 mm) and number (3, 2) of 2 mm diameter miniscrew used for the fixation of six holes for a curvilinear miniplate. A traction force of 4 N was applied at $0^{\circ}$, $30^{\circ}$, $60^{\circ}$ and $90^{\circ}$ to an imaginary axis connecting the two most distal unfixed holes of the miniplate. Results: The smaller the number of the miniscrew and the shorter the length of the miniscrew, the more the maximum von Mises stress in the bone and maximum displacement of the miniscrew increased. Most von Mises stress in the bone was absorbed in the cortical portion rather than in the cancellous portion. The more the angle of the applied force to the imaginary axis increased, the more the maximum von Mises stress in the bone and maximum displacement of the miniscrew increased. The maximum von Mises stress in the bone and maximum displacement of the miniscrew were measured around the most distal screw-fixed area. Condusions: The results suggest that the miniplate system should be positioned in the rigid cortical bone with 3 miniscrews of 2 mm diameter and 6 mm length, and its imaginary axis placed as parallel as possible to the direction of orthodontic force to obtain good primary stability.
