  • Multiple Lapse Time Window (MLTW) analysis for obtaining intrinsic attenuation value require numerous data without directional bias to compensate focal mechanism. The first window of MLTW, therefore, shows large deviation in fitting smoothed theoretical curve. The information on the focal mechanism may reduce burdens of number and distribution. This study combined algorithm of computing focal mechanism to DSMC method by Yoshimoto (2000). However, the MLTW method based on the numerous data was not applicable to this study, because of the limited data to the almost same fault plane solution. This study showed that the available data was too insufficient to construct smoothed theoretical curve, although the deviation of the first window was improved. Instead of conventional solution by more data, the study seems to be needed for new constraints to obtain smoothed curve.

  • In this study, deflection limits based on the vibration serviceability of guideway structures are proposed considering maglev train-guideway interaction. Equations of motion are derived for a simplified maglev railway. Feedback constants for the control of the electromagnetic force for levitation are optimized in order to minimize the airgap fluctuations. Deflection limits for a guideway are calculated for various operating speeds of a maglev train, span lengths of a guideway, and natural frequencies and damping ratios of the second suspension in order to satisfy the serviceability criteria for airgaps and for the vertical acceleration of a cabin. From the analysis results, proposed are requirements for the second suspension of maglev trains and deflection limits for guideway structures.

  • A suspension is the most prior apparatus to decide vehicle's running safety and ride comfort, also the suspension stiffness is the most important parameter for the designing of the vehicle. Providing the strong stiffness with the primary suspension in order to improve the running safety with high speed, but it causes a problem with a curve running performance of a railway vehicle. Therefore, many studies deal with the optimal value of suspension stiffness. In this paper, we aim to optimize the suspension system to improve running safety by varying stiffness values of railway vehicle suspension. We have proceeded an analysis by design variables which are position, length, width, stiffness and damping coefficients of primary and secondary suspension to optimize the suspension characteristics. As a result of the optimization, we verified that the derailment coefficients of inside and outside of wheel are decreased in comparison with initial model.

  • A series of forced vibration tests and ambient vibration measurement was conducted on a four-story reinforced concrete building damaged in the 1994 Northridge earthquake. Both low amplitude broadband and moderate amplitude harmonic excitation were applied using a linear shaker and two eccentric mass shakers, respectively, and ambient vibrations were measured before and after each forced vibration test. Accelerations, interstory displacements, and curvature distributions were monitored using accelerometers, LVDTs and concrete strain gauges. Natural frequencies and the associated mode shapes fur the first 7 modes were identified. Fundamental frequencies determined from the eccentric mass shaker tests were 70% to 75% of the values determined using ambient vibration data, and 92% to 93% of the values determined using the linear shaker test data. Larger frequency drops were observed in the NS direction of the building, apparently due to damage that was induced during the Northridge earthquake.

  • For a moored body on the sea surface, incident waves with narrow-banded spectra excite the body oscillations of short and long periods. Since the period of slow oscillations can be as long as the natural period of the moored body in horizontal modes, resonance can occur and resulting large motions may cause significant strains in mooring cables. By using the perturbation method of multiple scales, the large slow motion can be analyzed without solving any second-order potentials explicitly. To the leading order, the flows associated with the fast and slow motions interact only parametrically and thus they can be studied separately. It is found that the slow motion strongly depends on the mooring stiffness. In particular, if the moring stiffness is considerably weak compared to the body inertia, the slow motion is highly amplified near resonance. It is also shown that the slow motion is associated with the generation of long waves.

  • Swelling behaviors of raw (Specimen-R) and compressed (Specimen-C) samples of maleic anhydride-grafted EPDM (MAH-g-EPDM) depending on the treatment with dichloroacetic acid were investigated. Structural characteristics of the samples were analyzed by nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (NMR) and attenuated total reflectance-Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR). When the samples were not treated with dichloroacetic acid, the swelling ratio of Specimen-R was greater than that of Specimen-C by about twice and the swelling ratio change was negligible though the process of swelling and drying was repeated. When the samples were treated with dichloroacetic acid, the first swelling ratios were increased but the second ones were decreased. For the Specimen-C, the swelling ratio of the sample without the dichloroacetic acid treatment and the second swelling ratio of the sample treated with dichloroacetic acid were nearly the same. However, for the Specimen-R, the second swelling ratio of the sample treated with dichloroacetic acid was strikingly lower than that of the sample without the dichloroacetic acid treatment. The swelling ratio change according to the dichloroacetic acid treatment was explained by dissociation of the existing crosslinks and formation of new crosslinks.

  • In spite of its many strong points, pole-pole electrode configuration is not often used for ground electrical resistivity survey except for bore hole survey as normal logging and for archaeological investigation. Above all, poor spatial resolution of pole-pole survey may be responsible for this. But recent experiences so far gained by the present authers lead them to think that pole-pole survey can be at least a viable means of reconnaissance survey in near-surface conductive environment and an effective interpretational scheme may augment its resolution. As well known, a response of any other electrode configuration is a linear combination of pole-pole responses. Based on this principle of linear superposition and the principle of reciprocity, the other 'responses' can be derived with simple additions and subtractions of pole-pole responses. Though such responses are not always correct due to the adverse effects of noises, combined with the potential decay curves, they can be helpful to interprete better pole-pole survey data especially in connection of the resolution. This can be comparable to the use of the first or second derivatives of gravity and magnetic intensity surveys.

  • In this paper, a new filter structure to improve frequency response characteristics in decimation filter using CIC(Cascaded Integrator-Comb) filters and half band filters is proposed. Conventional filters improve only passband characteristics, but we propose a new filter which can improve stop band and pass band characteristics simultaneously. Since proposed filter needs only two multiplication, additional implementation cost is not much. And overall linear phase characteristics are maintained since the proposed filter is also linear phase. Finally, filter coefficients quantization effects ate discussed after Verilog-HDL coding.

  • This paper is proposed a new method to deal with the optimized auto-tuning for the Pill controller which is used to the process-control in various fields. First of all, in this method, 1st order delay system with dead time which is modelled from the unit step response of the system is Pade-approximated, then initial values are determined by the Ziegler-Nichols method. So we can find the parameters of Pill controller so as to minimize the fuzzy criterion function which includes the maximum overshoot, damping ratio, rising time and settling time. Finally, after studying the parameters of Pill controller by Backpropagation of Neural-Network, when we give new K, L, T values to Neural-Network, the optimized parameter of Pill controller is found by Neural-Network Program.rogram.

  • This is a study on application of a TVD-Mccormack scheme for the computation of one-dimensional dam-break flows. The TVD scheme not only has the ability to damp out oscillations, but also does not contain terms with adjustable parameters. Moreover, the TVD-McCormack scheme does not cause any additional difficulty when dealing with the source term of the equation and retains second-order accuracy in both space and time. In this study, by appropriately designing the limiter functions, the TVD property can be achieved, and numerical oscillations near a jump discontinuities can be eliminated or reduced. Also, this numerical scheme has less computational errors when the direction of the predictor-corrector step is in the same direction as the shock wane propagation.
