  • The present study develops a method for directly measuring the temperature field in the primary deformation zone with a high spatial resolution during 2-D orthogonal machining. This is enabled by the use of a high-speed, charge-coupled device (CCD) based, infra-red (IR) imaging system which allows characteristics of the temperature field such as the location and magnitude of the highest temperature and temperature gradient in the primary deformation zone to be identified. Based on these data, the relation between the machining temperature and the cutting conditions is investigated.

  • The object of the study is to discuss the effect of magic ink as a surface active substance on the mechanism of chip formation in oblique cutting. The Rehbinder effect has been known as a phenomenon that the mechanical strength reduces when the metal is coated with some surface active substances. In order to interpret these surface effects defined by Rehbinder, the influence on the shear strength of shear plane by coating surface active substances, cutting force by the depth of cut, surface roughness and hardness ratio were observed. The results are as follows: 1. By coating the magic ink on free surface of the forming chip, the effective shear angle increases, and the cuttinbg force and the deformed chip thickness decreases. 2. With the large inclination angle the effective shear angle increases, and the specific cutting force and the friction angle decrease. 3. Cutting of the coated surface improves the surface roughness and the hardness ratio drops, which means another Rehbinder effect.

  • Plastically deformed layer influences the mechanical property of the mechanical element such as creep hardening, microscopical crack and stress corrosion destruction. Therefore, the property so called the surface integrity has to be considered, and the machined surface including plastic deformation, distribution of stress has to be conducted quantitatively. This paper explains the orthogonal cutting, and made an orthogonal cutting model using the finite element method, then analyzed cutting power, plastic deformation of workpiece. It introduces the developed subsequent recrystallizations technique for measurement of the plastic strain of machined surface, and verified the technique.

  • The objective of this study is to establish the comprehensive analytical relationship between acoustic emission and fundamental parameters of the orthogonal cutting process. The sources of acoustic emission in the orthogonal metal cutting process was identified as deformation in the shear zone and sliding friction at the chip-tool interface. The validity of this relationship is evaluated by a series of tests varing cutting speed and rake angle for A16063 tube. Strong dependence of the RMS voltage of acoustic emission on cutting speed and rake angle was observed. It was also found that the percentage contribution of AE energy at each zone for the total AE activity is constant in accordance with the change of cutting speed. The relationship between the RMS of acoustic emission and the fundamental cutting parameters was modified in order to be utilized independent of rake angle.

  • In this study, NIMAX material has been processed using the three-dimensional measuring instrument and white light interferometer. they were tested to roundness and surface roughness and results are as follows: As for a cutting characteristic, it indicated that F4 showed a lower result than 2F showed due to the high hardness of the material and showed a good result when spindle rotation speed and tool feed were low. As for the measurement of roundness through 3-Dimensional measuring machine, it indicated that 4F showed a good result like the condition of cutting component and that roundness showed a good result when spindle rotation speed of 1,700 rpm and tool feed speed of 85 mm/min were applied. As for the surface roughness of processing surface, Surface roughness showed better 4F than 2F and conditions of spindle rotation speed 1,700 rpm, tool feed rate 55 mm/min showed good results in the Ra $0.4025{\mu}m$.

  • A series of numerical experiments were carried out to simulate the rock cutting behavior by TBM disc cutter in a given took condition. AUTODYN-3D, a commercial program capable of simulating three-dimensional dynamic failure, was utilized to carry out the numerical tests over four different disc cutter spacing conditions. After modelling three-dimensional geometries of disc cutter and rock specimen, the linear cutting tests by a disc cutter were simulated for eight different types of rocks. The numerical result, that is the optimum cutter spacing for isotropic rocks had the good agreements with those from linear cutting test. However, for relatively anisotropic or jointed rocks, the specific energy obtained from the numerical tests was almost two-times bigger than the real linear cutting results. Therefore, to simulate cutting procedures for anisotropic rocks realistically, further studies would be necessary.

  • In process planning for 3D pocket machining, the critical issues for the optimal process planning are the generation of cutting layers and the tool selection for each cutting layers as well as the other factors such as the determination of machining types, tool path, etc. This paper describes the optimal tool selection on a single cutting layer for 2D pocket machining, the generation of cutting layers for 3D pocket machining, the determination of the thickness of each cutting layers, the determination of the tool combinations for each cutting layers and also the development of an algorithm for determining the machining sequence which reduces the number of tool exchanges, which are based on the backward approach. The branch and bound method is applied to select the optimal tools for each cutting layer, and an algorithmic procedure is developed to determine the machining sequence consisting of the pairs of the cutting layers and cutting tools to be used in the same operation.

  • The subsequent recrystallizations technique, and experimental strain measurement method by use of recrystallization phenomena, has been successfully applied for the observation of machined surface plastic zones with equivalent plastic strain .epsilon. .geq. 0.5, 0.12 and 0.02 of type 304 stainless steel. The depth of the zone with .epsilon. .geq. 0.5 is very small, 10-15 .mu. m, while those with .epsilon. .geq. 0.12 are 100-200 .mu. m and 200-450 .mu. m, respectively. The depths increase with increasing depth of cut and with decreasing rake angle. The relation between the depth of the zones and the cutting paramenters is shown. The deformation state ahead of the quick-stop cut was also well visualized by the technique.
