  • Recently, there has been an increased interest in the noise isolation capacity of floor slabs, and thus an increase of slab thickness is required. In addition, long span floor systems are frequently used for efficient space use of building structures. In order to satisfy these requirements, a biaxial hollow slab system has been developed. To verify the structural capacity of a biaxial hollow slab system, safety verification against earthquake loads is essential. Therefore, the seismic behavior of a biaxial hollow slab system has been investigated using material nonlinear time history analyses. For efficient time history analyses, the equivalent plate element model previously proposed was used and the seismic capacity of the example structure having a biaxial hollow slab system has been evaluated using the nonlinear finite element model developed by the equivalent frame method. Based on analytical results, it has been shown that the seismic capacity of a biaxial hollow slab system is not worse than that of a flat plate slab system with the same thickness.

  • Considering that the weight of a biaxial hollow slab system is not increased with an incremental increase in its thickness, and that the flexural stiffness of a biaxial hollow slab is not significantly lower than that of a general solid slab, there has been a growing need for biaxial hollow slab systems, because long span structures are in great demand. In a long span structure, the problem of vibration of floor slabs frequently occurs, and the dynamic characteristics of a biaxial hollow slab system are quite different from the conventional floor systems. Therefore, in this study, the floor vibration of a biaxial hollow slab system subjected to walking load is investigated in comparison with a conventional floor slab system. For the efficiency of time history analysis, an equivalent plate slab model that can precisely represent the dynamic behavior of a biaxial hollow slab system is used. From the analytical results, it was determined that vibration of a biaxial hollow slab system subjected to walking load is evaluated as "office-level vibration," according to the classifications of the architectural institute of Japan and ANSI.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the feasibility of the expedite construction of new pavement systems using precast concrete slabs and to develop the design and construction guide based on the results of the experimental construction. Half scale concrete slabs were designed and fabricated and the optimal reinforcement design, linkages between the slabs in the longitudinal and transverse directions, and the grouting methods were investigated. The experimental construction was performed fast and easily by assembling two slabs in the longitudinal direction and the other two in the transverse direction. The slabs were leveled and the pockets and the space between the slab bottom and the underlying layer were grouted. From the experimental construction, details about the design and construction of the precast pavements were acquired. Finally, the design and construction guide for the newly constructed precast concrete pavement systems was developed.

  • In this study, an equivalent plate element model has been developed for an efficient vibration analysis of a biaxial hollow slab. To this end, equivalent mass and stiffness of equivalent plate element models corresponding to solid element models of example biaxial hollow slabs were calculated. To verify the efficiency and accuracy of the equivalent plate element models, structural analyses of example structures were performed. Analytical results showed that the natural frequencies of the equivalent plate element models were very close to those of the solid element models. Time history analyses of example biaxial hollow slabs subjected to walking load were conducted using the equivalent plate element models and the solid element models, and the results were compared. It could be seen based on the analytical results that the equivalent plate element model could provide very accurate results compared to the solid element model with significantly reduced analysis time.

  • An experimental research has been performed to evaluate the load transfer capacity for the planar joints between existing and new slab in an apartment remodelling constructions expecially for enlarging the interior space. Post-installed dowel bars were used as a joint connector. The existing slabs were obtained from the existing apartment housing which will be demolished, and were retrofitted with carbon fiber plate. Test results showed that the planar joints with post-installed dowel bars behaved in full composite modes until ultimate capacity of test specimens, so sufficient ultimate and serviceability performance are confirmed.

  • This study attempts to identify the ways of reducing the floor impact sound, by applying six different types of the reinforced bar girders and stirrup arrangements to the Structure: (1) the longer-direction girder arrangements (2) the shorter-direction girder arrangements (3) the diagonal-direction arrangements (4) the longer-direction girder arrangements with stirrups (5) the shorter-direction girder arrangements with stirrups (6) the diagonal-direction arrangements with stirrups. In order to identify the most effective structural changes, each slab was tested with bang machines, measuring the level of the sound impact. The results showed that the longer-direction girder arrangements with stirrups were the most effective one. In addition, the effectiveness of slab was found to be remarkable, showing the level of minimum 1dB to maximum 5dB, where the slab was compared with the control models without girders and stirrups. In conclusion, it is suggested that the longer-direction girder arrangements with stirrups could possibly be applied to the Wall Structures to minimize the floor impact sound.

  • The influence of the differences in the physical and mechanical properties between fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) and conventional steel, concentrated reinforcement in the immediate column region, as well as using steel fiber-reinforced concrete (SFRC) in the slab near the column faces, on the punching behavior of two-way slabs were investigated. The punching shear capacity, stiffness, ductility, strain distribution, and crack control were investigated. Concentrating of the slab reinforcement and the use of SFRC in the slab enhanced the punching behavior of the slabs reinforced with glass fiber-reinforced polymer (GFRP) bars. In addition the test results of the slabs with concentrated reinforcement were compared with various code equations and the predictions proposed in the literature specifically for FRP-reinforced slabs. An appropriate method for determining the reinforcement ratio of slabs with a banded distribution was also investigated to allow predictions to properly reflect the benefit of the slab reinforcement concentration.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the causes that induce the T-shape cracks at the joints in the jointed concrete pavements(JCPs). The finite element models of JCP including dowel bars were developed and the stress distribution in the slab was investigated under environmental loads. To investigate the effect of dowel bars on the transverse stresses at the joints that induce the T-shape cracks, the slab curling behavior was analyzed with and without dowel bars. In addition, the stress concentration was investigated when the dowel bar was not installed at the mid-depth of the slab. The results of this study showed that the transverse stresses were not affected by the dowel bars if the dowel bars were installed at the mid-depth of the slab. However, if the dowel bars were not installed at the mid-depth, the transverse stresses were concentrated at the dowel bar locations when the slab curled. The stress concentration was dependent on the contact characteristics between the dowel bar and concrete, and was significantly large when the dowel bar not installed at the mid-depth was located far from the edge of the slab. Therefore, to mitigate T-shape cracking in JCP, dowel bars should be very carefully installed and leveled at the proper locations.

  • This research program is directed at studying the behavior and the strength of reinforced concrete slabs sub¬jected to certain combination of punching shear and in-plane tension. Major variables to be investigated are the shear span to depth ratio of reinforced concrete slabs and the degree of the in-plane tensile force which is act¬ing tangent to the slabs. The experimental results are used for understanding of the degree of tbe interaction between the two loadings, and for developing a new practical design equation.

  • The objective of this study was to investigate features of transverse crack occurrence and propagation in continuously reinforced concrete pavement(CRCP) when subjected to environmental loading. The finite element model of CRCP was developed and the element removal method was implemented to predict the crack propagation process. To investigate the effect of the type of environmental loading on the CRCP behavior and cracking aspects, the following three different cases were considered: (1) the temperature gradient between top and bottom of the slab does not vary and the constant temperature drop throughout the depth occurs; (2) the temperature at the slab bottom does not vary and the temperature gradient increases; and (3) the temperature between the mid-depth and the bottom of the slab is the same and does not vary and the temperature at the top decreases. The analysis results showed that the crack occurrence and propagation through the depth of the slab in CRCP were significantly affected by the type of environmental loading. The changes in stress distribution and displacements during the crack occurrence and propagation process could also be investigated.
