The results from the experiment of natural collection and growth of arkshell(Anadara broughtoni, SCHRENCK) spat, which was collected at Seok-gok Bay located at Chang-weon-gun, Korea, and grown in the 1ittoral zone of Sa-gok-ri, Geo-je-gun, Korea, beginning from August 1,1973 to April 8,1974 are as follows; The larvae of arkshell came out from the very first day of the study August 1, which continued till the end of September, whose amount was not so much varied, but relatively continuous. The drifting larvae were also rather small amount, from which some 200 to 400 larvae were attached through the respective collecting equipment made from straw with the dimension of length 1.5m and breadth 12cm. It is regarded relatively large amount collected and recognised worth while enough to use as the industrial collecting method. The average shell length of spat attached was 0.54mm on 17th September, 4.11mm on 21st October, 10.47mm on 25th November in 1973 and 11.08mm on 8th April in 1974 whose progress was recognized relatively faster, comparing with the other up-to date report, The relationship between the shell length(L) and the longest radial rib(R) was as follows: Below 2.5mm of the shell length: R=0.7393 L -0.0080 Above 2.5mm of the shell length: R=0.8253 L-0.2595 And the relationship between the shell length (L) and the shell breadth (B) was as follows: Below 2.5mm of the shell length: B=0.3505 L +0.0527 Above 2.5mm of the shell length: B=0.4631 L -0.3602 The exponential curve equation between shell length (L) and the total weight (W)was as follows : Below 16mm of the shell length: W=0.19957 $L^{2.5726}$ Above 16mm of the shell length: W=0.20602 $L^{2.8400}$ In view of the above the relative growth among the shell length, the longest radial rib and the shell breadth was changed in the vicinity of 2.5mm of the shell length. And relationship between the shell length and the total weight was changed in the vicinity of 16mm of the shell length.
This study was to evaluate ecological health of Dongjin River in October 2007. The ecological health assessments was based on the Index of Biological Integrity (IBI), Qualitative Habitat Evaluation Index (QHEI), and water chemistry. For the study, the models of IBI and QHEI were modified as 8 and 11 metric attributes, respectively. We also analyzed spatial patterns of chemical water quality over the period of 2005${\sim}$2008, using the water chemistry dataset, obtained from the Ministry of Environment, Korea. In Dongjin River, values of IBI averaged 19 (n=3), which is judged as a "Fair" condition after the criteria of Barbour et al. (1999). There was a distinct spatial variation. IBI score at Site 1 was estimated as 28, indicating a "Good" condition whereas, IBI at Site 2 and Site 3 were as 18 and 12, indicating "Fair" and "Poor" condition, respectively. Habitat analysis showed that QHEI values in the river averaged 117 (n=3), indicating a "Fair${\sim}$Good" condition after the criteria of Barbour et al. (1999). Values of BOD and COD averaged 2.3 mg $L^{-1}$ (scope: 0.1${\sim}$8.9 mg $L^{-1}$) and 5.5 mg $L^{-1}$ (scope: 1.8${\sim}$12.6 mg $L^{-1}$), respectively during the study. Total nitrogen (TN) and total phosphorus (TP) averaged 2.7mg $L^{-1}$ and 0.127mg $L^{-1}$, respectively, and the nutrients showed large longitudinal gradients between the upper and lower reach. Overall, dataset of IBI, QHEI, and water chemistry showed that river health was a gradual decline at upstream to downstream. So, Dongjin River should be protected from habitat disturbance and chemical pollutions.
In order to evaluate primary clarifier performance on TSS(Total Suspended solids) removal, four different sampling sets were collected as part of this study; (1) weekly test, (2) the diurnal sampling, (3) the settling velocity distribution sampling. Primary effluent TSS($TSS_{PE}$) and non settleable TSS($TSS_{NON}$) concentrations were averaged 160 and 75.5 mg/L, respectively. These data suggest approximately 85 mg/L TSS can be removed more. Average $TSS_{NON}$, $TSS_{PE}$, and Dispersed TSS(DTSS) concentrations(75.5, 160, and 104 mg/L, respectively) suggest that 28.5 mg/L of TSS difference attributable to poor flocculation, whereas 56 mg/L of TSS difference attributable to poor hydraulics within primary clarifier. In this study, equations for maximum TSS removal efficiency and effluent TSS concentration were suggested and compared with experimented data.

The changes in L ascorbic acid content by processing treatments; gamma irradiation, heating and microwave were investigated using high performance liquid chromatography. The content of L ascorbic acid in standard solutions and citrus fruits decreased from 27.4 to 44.9% and from 6.9 to 21.9%, re spectively, by gamma irradiation doses in the range of 1 to 10 kGy. By heating treatments, L ascorbic acids in standard solutions and citrus fruits were destroyed 22.5 to 36.8% and 4.5 to 18.1%, respectively. By microwave treatment, L ascorbic acid content also decreased from 23.1 to 47.4% and from 6.5 to 22.6%, respectively.
A sensitive and specific method is described for the determination of midazolam in human plasma. The drug was extracted from 1 mL of carbonate buffered plasma (pH 9.6) with 8 mL of diethyl ether. Famprofazone was used as internal standard. The organic phase was evaporated to dryness. The residue was dissolved in methanol for the direct analysis by gas chromatograph-nitrogen phosphorus detector system. In the concentration range of 1-5000 ng/mL, the calibration curve was linear. The coefficients of variation from the precision test were <6% at the range of the concentration of 0.10-2.00 μg/mL and the detection limit for midazolam in 1 mL of plasma was o.5 ng. This assay is more sensitive, selective, simple and rapid than earlier methods. Plasma midazolam concentrations were determined by this method after administration of midazolam.
Two probiotic strains, Lactobacillus johnsonii x-1d-2 and Lactobacillus mucosae x-4w-1, originally isolated from piglet feces, have been demonstrated to possess antimicrobial activities, antibiotic resistances and interleukin-6 induction ability in RAW 267.4 macrophages in our previous study. These characteristics make L. johnsonii x-1d-2 and L. mucosae x-4w-1 good candidates for application in feed probiotics. In this study, soybeal meal, molasses and sodium acetate were selected to optimize the growth medium for cultivation of L. johnsonii x-1d-2 and L. mucosae x-4w-1. These two strains were then freeze-dried and mixed into the basal diet to feed the weaned piglets. The effects of L. johnsonii x-1d-2 and L. mucosae x-4w-1 on the growth performance and fecal microflora of weaned piglets were investigated. The results showed that the bacterial numbers of L. johnsonii x-1d-2 and L. mucosae x-4w-1 reached a maximum of 8.90 and 9.30 log CFU/mL, respectively, when growing in optimal medium consisting of 5.5% (wt/vol) soybean meal, 1.0% (wt/vol) molasses and 1.0% (wt/vol) sodium acetate. The medium cost was 96% lower than the commercial de Man, Rogosa and Sharpe medium. In a further feeding study, the weaned piglets fed basal diet supplemented with freeze-dried probiotic cultures exhibited higher (p<0.05) body weight gain, feed intake, and gain/feed ratio than weaned piglets fed basal diet. Probiotic feeding also increased the numbers of lactobacilli and decreased the numbers of E. coli in the feces of weaned piglets. This study demonstrates that L. johnsonii x-1d-2 and L. mucosae x-4w-1 have high potential to be used as feed additives in the pig industry.
Fe-l7Cr-2M(M=Si, Nb, Mo) alloy powder was prepared by plasma electrode rotating atomizer and than the alloy powder was formed and sintered. The particle shape of the Fe-l7Cr-2M(M=Si, Nb, Mo) alloy power is spherical. The saturation magnetization of the sintered Fe-17Cr-2Mo and Fe-l7Cr-2Nb alloy are 155 emu/g. The saturation magnetization of the sintered Fe-l7Cr-2Si alloy is less than that of the sintered Fe-l7Cr-2Mo and Fe-l7Cr-2Nb alloy. The amplitude relative permeability of the sintered Fe-l7Cr-2M(M=Si, Nb, Mo) alloy has the maximum value in the range of 3∼5 Oe applied field at forming pressure 12 ton/cm$^2$, sintering temperature 1200$^{\circ}C$, and frequency 1 kHz. Power loss of the sintered Fe-l7Cr-2Nb alloy is 40 mW/cc at applied field, H$\sub$a/=5 Oe, and frequency, f=1 kHz. The power loss of the sintered Fe-l7Cr-2Nb alloy is a half of that of the sintered Fe-l7Cr-2Si and Fe-l7Cr-2Mo alloy.

The L-shaped strip is shown to be an attractive feed for the thick microstrip antenna (thickness around 10% of the operating wavelength). The L-strip incorporated with the radiating patch introduces a capacitance suppressing some of the inductance introduced by the strip itself. In this paper, a wideband microstrip patch antenna fed by L-strip for the PCS (1,750~1,850 MHz) and IMT-2000 (1,920~2,170 MHz) broad-band is presented. A two-element array fed by L-strip is also proposed. Both the antennas have stable radiation patterns across the passband. The impedance bandwidth is over 31% (VSWR < 1.5, 615 MHz) of the center frequency. Moreover, both the antennas have about 7 dBi average gain.

In this study, the antioxidative effects for the extracts of purple sweet potato (Ipomoea batatas L. Lam.) were investigated. The purple sweet potato was extracted with 70% ethanol and the ethyl acetate fraction was obtained from the extracts. The yields of extract and ethyl acetate fraction were 39.2% and 3.49% per dried powder, respectively. To confirm the antioxidative effects of the extracts, free radical scavenging activities (1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl), total antioxidant capacity by luminol-dependent chemiluminescence assay and the protective effects against reactive oxygen species (ROS) in erythrocytes were measured. Free radical scavenging activities ($FSC_{50}$) of the 70% ethanol extract and ethyl acetate fraction were $90.16{\mu}g/mL$ and $7.69{\mu}g/mL$, respectively. The free radical scavenging activity of ethyl acetate fraction was higher than that of (+)-${\alpha}$-tocopherol ($8.98{\mu}g/mL$). Total antioxidant capacities ($OSC_{50}$) of the 70% ethanol extract and ethyl acetate fraction were $5.75{\mu}g/mL$ and $1.92{\mu}g/mL$, respectively. The capacity of ethyl acetate fraction was similar to L-ascorbic acid, known as a prominent water soluble antioxidant ($1.50{\mu}g/mL$). The cellular protective effects of the ethyl acetate fractions on the $^1O_2$-induced cellular damage of human erythrocytes were increased in a concentration dependent manner ($5{\sim}50{\mu}g/mL$). The ${\tau}_{50}$ value in $5{\mu}g/mL$ was 45.6 min which was higher than that of (+)-${\alpha}$-tocopherol in all concentrations. These results indicate that the ethyl acetate fraction of purple sweet potato (I. batatas) has the excellent antioxidative capacity and could be applicable to anti-aging cosmeceutical ingredients for skin aging inhibition.
Effect of hydrochlorothiazide on serum potassium level was studied in the hypokalemia-induced rats by the oral administration of glycyrrhiza extract (GE) for 4 weeks. According to the concentration of GE, serum potassium levels were found to be $5.8{\pm}0.2,\;5.4{\pm}0.2\;and\;5.5{\pm}0.2\;mM/l$ after oral administration of 0.1, 0.2 and 0.5% GE solutions for 4 weeks, respectively, comparing $6.4{\pm}0.2\;mM/l$ in normal rats. The i.p. administration of hydrochlorothiazide (100mg/kg) showed no significant difference $(5.1{\pm}0.3-5.2{\pm}0.3\;mM/l)$ in the decrease of serum potassium levels between these hypokalemia-induced rats and normal rats, regardless of the concentration of pretreated GE solutions. Therefore it was considered that the administration of hydrochlorothiazide did not worsen the hypokalemia induced by the long term administration of GE in rats.
