  • The goal of this paper is to analyze the relationship between pedagogy and the emergence of contemporary Korean architecture after the 1990s. For this purpose, the paper deals with the education and work of two important contemporary Korean architects, Kim Seung Hoy and Choi Wook. Kim and Choi were part of a group of young architects that went abroad in the 1980s to study at the centers of architectural education in Europe and the United States. Through their education and work, the paper discusses the relationship among education, history, and design practice in architecture. During their studies at Michigan University and IUAV in Venice, they were commonly influenced by Colin Rowe through their studios. In the case of Kim Seung Hoy, he was introduced to the Beaux Arts logic of the analytique and esquisse through the teaching of Steven Hurrt, a disciple of Colin Rowe. Choi Wook took studios that involved formal analysis and comparison of Palladio and Le Corbusier. The paper further analyzes their works in Korea by employing the concepts of fragments and systems, ignorance and knowledge. The paper concludes that, in Korean contemporary architecture, fragments and systems, ignorance and knowledge, lie in the middle of ongoing creative process that must distinguished from the West, where architectural history provides an established tradition of systematic knowledge.

  • Genus Prorocentrum of dinoflagellate has been known as representative causative algae of red tide in Masan-Jinhae Bay. Prorocentrum populations- P. dentatum Stein, p. micans Ehrenberg, P. minimum (Pavillard) Schiller and P. triestinum Schiller- were monitored from January 1990 to August 1997, Prorocentrum populations usually have bloomed during the water stratification periods from June to August. Water temperature ranged from 24$^{\circ}C$ to 28$^{\circ}C$ and salinity from 24$\textperthousand$ to 34$\textperthousand$ during the Prorocentrum blooms. Bloom magnitude of Prorooentrum populations gradually increased from offshore to inshore area of coastal embayment and this populations tended to concentrate from surface to 2.5m depth. Prorocentrum algal blooms have become more frequent and intense than those of 1980s and early 1990s. P. minimum was the most persistent species in terms of bloom frequency and cellular abundance.

  • This paper aims to explore the institutional traits of the federal employees pension system in the United States and the direction of its reform. Currently the United States has two systems of the federal employees pension. One is CSRS, the other is FERS. The former was firstly introduced in 1920 as a generous DB pension well before the establishment of the Social Security System(OASDI). What led to the latter, FERS was the Social Security Amendment Act of 1983 and Federal Employee Retirement System Act of 1986. The crucial difference between the CSRS and the FERS is the contrasting characteristic of their relationships with OASDI. The CSRS has just one source of retirement benefit(DB pension) without OASDI benefit, whereas the FERS has three sources(OASDI benefit, basic annuity(DB), DC typed TSP benefit). When it comes to FERS, what matters most is TSP(Thrift Savings Plan).

  • This study examines the identities shifting experiences of the ethnic Chinese refugee migrants who have returned to Vietnam. Their complex and hybrid identities as diaspora is an analytical and empirical subject for this study. Since the Vietnamese government implemented the renovation (đổi mới) policy in 1986, the number of overseas Vietnamese returning to Vietnam for visit, work, investment and retirement has been increasing. Among the returnees, many are ethnic Chinese, as there were many Chinese Vietnamese in the Vietnamese refugee diaspora from Vietnam during the 1970s and the 1980s. When they left Vietnam they were called 'the Hoa' (Chinese) or 'Hoa kiều' (overseas Chinese). When they returned, however, they were recognised together with all other returnees into the category of Việt kiều (overseas Vietnamese). Although their 'Chinese' identity had once made them to risk their lives, their 'Vietnamese' identity brought them back to Vietnam at other turning points in their lives. The shifting identity of these returning Chinese Vietnamese has produced dynamic and complex migration stories and an intriguing category of hybrid diaspora.

  • Local government takes an active role in the (re)making of local socio-economic space. To support such an argument, the three different actions by the local government of Taegu, urban planning and local industrial districts, the establishment of special educational institutions, and textile festival are analyzed. The division of the city's space into residential, commercial, and industrial area by local government constrained the location of local manufacturing industries. It also forced textile industry to move to the outskirts of Taegu. As the education level in South Korea rose after the late 1970s, the local government of Taegu as well as local industrial capitalists had to do something to acquire a stable supply of labor to local manufacturing industries, particularly textile one. After the late 1970s, the special classes for the education of local workers, especially textile ones were established within vocational high school and company-operated high schools were also built in Taegu. Finally, local government started a program of textile festival in 1985. Through textile festival, local government as well as local textile business people tried to reproduce textile industry as the main economic activity of Taegu.

  • This study focuses on the Andong Hahoe Village and seeks to identify the shape of the walls since the 1970s. The change of walls can be divided into four periods based on characteristics of materials, shape and distribution. The following is a summary of the results: First, In the 1970s, when Andong Hahoe Village was not designated as a cultural heritage, roof tiles hung on the earthen walls in the middle of the village were major forms. On the outside of the village, rice straw and pine needles were put on the earthen walls or bush clover walls were put in place around if walls were not built. Second, after being designated as a cultural heritage in the 1980s, readjustments for cultural heritages were carried out at the primary stage. However, the distribution of cultural heritages and major changes were not determined at this time since readjustments were mainly focused on the renovation of derelict houses or maintenance of infrastructures. Third, in the past the use of stone bricks for the Hahoe Village site had been difficult, but in the 1990s, replacements with soil-stone walls were identified and the usage of roof tiles increased. The portion of earthen walls, which used to be the major form in the prior era, decreased and this seems to have continued until the 2000s. Fourth, via a field survey, it was found that most of Hahoe village walls consisted of soil cement bricks mixed with cement, steel, lime, gravel. etc. Also, the scope of straw-stricken walls and bush clover walls were reduced to a section of area outside of the village. Fifth, from the 1970s to the present, there were changes to the walls in Hahoe Village including an increase in usages of new materials and an expansion of houses with tiled roofs on top in accordance with the replacement of walls of existing houses. Relevant reasons for this have been identified, such as the fading value of Fungsui(風水) and lack of original records, insufficient awareness and expertise in non-building areas, and the relationship between residents on repairing the wall.

  • Electronics industry provides more revenue and jobs, and plays an important role in a variety of fields. During recent changes to the industrial strategy by IT convergence technology development and global economic integration, Global Value Chain(GVC) of the ICT industry has been expanded. The global value chain is a structure consisting of the global dimension in all the processes of business activity for value-added production, R&D, manufacturing, sales, A/S etc. The purpose of this study is to analyze the GVC in the electronics industry and GVC promote practice of Samsung Electronics and LG Electronics. GVC of the electronics industry was developed from 1980, and established manufacturing plant in the United States and Canada. GVC has moved to low-cost countries such as China, Taiwan and India to cut costs, In recent years, because of the rising labor and production costs in China, manufacturing plants move to the Vietnam that has relatively cheap production base. To develop consistently, Korean electronics companies should carry out a new strategy such as item and brand marketing to exporting country.

  • The IPv4 that used to be generally used as a medium of computer communications in 1980s has reached its limits now. IPv6 (IP Version 6) is being prepared to solve the limitations of the IPv4. However, the biggest problem of IPv6 is that it is not compatible with the IPv4. To resolve the compatibility issue, Dual Stack, Tunneling and Header Converting methods have been proposed. The Header Converting method allows communications between the IPv4 and IPv6 networks with the converter. This method's strength is that it is easy to embody and the procedures for embodiment is simple. However, this method still contains the weaknesses that the existing IPv4 has. On the current document, the Header Converting method among the three methods is discussed to resolve the problems this method has. To solve the Header Converting method's weakness, the security problem between sections, the IP Header field values are converted to the relative field values and IPSec (IP Security) and ESP (Encapsulation Security Payload) are applied. The proposed "Encrypted Header Converting Method" that is encrypted in packet units has solved the weakness that the pre-existing Header Converting method used to have.d to have.

  • The various software engineering techniques have been come out in order to cope with the software crisis since 1980's. These days the software Engineering has focused on the process of software development which is the guide for a qualify and productive improvement of software. But, most of the methodologies assume that a new system will be constructed and reused in the future. these do not support how we reuse legacy system's resources and construct a new system efficiently. In this paper, we present an efficient Reengineering Process for legacy system evolutions, RUP+re, which extends and customizes RUP. RUP+re consists of Reverse Engineering Workflow, Transformation Workflow and Evolution Workflow based on Small-h model. We describe RUP+re's workflows with their own detail steps and verify the process through the case study practivally. So, we provide efficient guidelines to the software Reengineering process construction which evolutes the resources of a legacy system.
