  • This paper aims at designing a selective demodulation scheme based on Log-likelihood Ratio threshold (SDLT) instead of the conventional adaptive demodulation (ADM) scheme, by using rateless codes. The major difference is that the Log-likelihood ratio (LLR) threshold is identified as a key factor to control the demodulation rate, while the ADM uses decision region set (DRS) to adjust the bit rate. In the 16-QAM SDLT scheme, we deduce the decision regions over an additive white Gaussian channel, corresponding to the variation of LLR threshold and channel states. We also derived the equations to calculate demodulation rate and bit error rate (BER), which could be proven by simulation results. We present an adaptation strategy for SDLT, and compare it with ADM and adaptive modulation (AM). The simulation results show that our scheme not only significantly outperforms the ADM in terms of BER, but also achieves a performance as good as the AM scheme. Moreover, the proposed scheme can support much more rate patterns over a wide range of channel states.

  • Complex-valued blind algorithms which are based on constant modulus error and Euclidian distance (ED) between two probability density functions show relatively poor performance in spite of the advantages of information theoretic learning since the inherent characteristics of the constant modulus error prevent the algorithm from coping with the symbol phase rotation caused by the complex channels. In this paper, we show that the symbol phase rotation problem can be avoided and the advantages of information theoretic learning can be preserved by introducing decision-directed mode to the blind algorithm whenever the equalizer output power lies in the neighborhood of multi-modulus levels. Simulation results through MSE convergence and constellation comparison for severely distorted complex channels show significantly enhanced performance of symbol-point concentration and no phase rotation problems caused by the complex channel models.

  • In this paper, the BER(Bit Error Rate) performance of a DVB-T2(Second Generation Digital Terrestrial Television Broadcasting System) in MISO(Multiple Input Single Output) transmission mode is evaluated by the computer simulation. In the DVB-T2 receiver, an IDD(Iterative Demapping and Decoder) technique is employed that exchanges extrinsic information between the demapper and the LDPC decoder. Simulation results show that the IDD-based DVB-T2 receiver in MISO transmission mode provides 2dB gain at BER of $10^{-4}$ but suffer from the frequency offsets between transmit antennas.

  • This paper presents an envelope tracking power amplifier using a standard CMOS process for the 3GPP long-term evolution transmitters. An efficiency of the CMOS power amplifier for the modulated signals can be improved using a highly efficient and wideband CMOS bias modulator. The CMOS PA is based on a two-stage differential common-source structure for high gain and large voltage swing. The bias modulator is based on a hybrid buck converter which consists of a linear stage and a switching stage. The dynamic load condition according to the envelope signal level is taken into account for the bias modulator design. By applying the bias modulator to the power amplifier, an overall efficiency of 41.7 % was achieved at an output power of 24 dBm using the 16-QAM uplink LTE signal. It is 5.3 % points higher than that of the power amplifier alone at the same output power and linearity.

  • The mobile hotspot network (MHN), which is capable of providing a data rate of gigabits per second at high speed, is considered a potential use case of the future enhanced mobile broadband for 5G. Because a unidirectional network deployment has been considered for an MHN, non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) can be employed to improve the system performance. For a practical implementation of NOMA under an MHN highway scenario where multiple pieces of MHN terminal equipment are served through the same beam simultaneously, a NOMA transceiver is proposed in this paper. For the NOMA transmitter, Gray-coded QAM constellation mapping is extended to arbitrary modulation order q. For the NOMA receiver, successive interference cancellation (SIC) is no longer necessary, and instead, a parallel demodulation is proposed. The numerical and simulation results suggest that the proposed NOMA transceiver outperforms the conventional NOMA SIC receiver and can be flexibly used for an MHN highway scenario.

  • This paper proposes a common interleaving method associated with independent channel-encoding among transmitter antenna branches in orthogonal frequency and code division multiplexing based on multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) multiplexing to achieve an extremely high throughput such as 1 Gbps using a 100 MHz bandwidth. This paper also investigates the average packet error rate performance as a function of the average received signal energy per bit-to-background noise power spectrum density ratio $(E_b/N_0)$. We found that the loss in the required average received $E_b/N_0$ of the proposed method is only within approximately 0.3 dB in up to a 12-path Rayleigh fading channel, using 16QAM and Turbo coding with a coding rate of 5/6. We also clarify that even for a large fading correlation among antenna branches, 1 Gbps is still possible by increasing the transmission power. Therefore, the proposed method reduces the processing rate to 1/4 in the turbo decoder with only a slight loss in the required average received $E_b/N_0$.

  • This paper presents a low-complexity channel-adaptive reconfigurable $4{\times}4$ QR-decomposition and M-algorithm-based maximum likelihood detection (QRM-MLD) multiple-input and multiple-output (MIMO) detector. Two novel design approaches for low-power QRM-MLD hardware are proposed in this work. First, an approximate survivor metric (ASM) generation technique is presented to achieve considerable computational complexity reduction with minor BER degradation. A reconfigurable QRM-MLD MIMO detector (where the M-value represents the number of survival branches in a stage) for dynamically adapting to time-varying channels is also proposed in this work. The proposed reconfigurable QRM-MLD MIMO detector is implemented using a Samsung 65 nm CMOS process. The experimental results show that our ASM-based QRM-MLD MIMO detector shows a maximum throughput of 288 Mbps with a normalized power efficiency of 10.18 Mbps/mW in the case of $4{\times}4$ MIMO with 64-QAM. Under time-varying channel conditions, the proposed reconfigurable MIMO detector also achieves average power savings of up to 35% while maintaining a required BER performance.

  • In this paper, we propose an efficient soft-output signal detection method for spatially multiplexed multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems. The proposed method is based on the ordered successive interference cancellation (OSIC) algorithm, but it significantly improves the performance of the original OSIC algorithm by solving the error propagation problem. The proposed method combines this enhanced OSIC algorithm with a multiple-channel-ordering technique in a very efficient way. As a result, the log likelihood ratio values can be computed by using a very small set of candidate symbol vectors. The proposed method has been synthesized with a 0.13-${\mu}m$ CMOS technology for a $4{\times}4$ 16-QAM MIMO system. The simulation and implementation results show that the proposed detector provides a very good solution in terms of performance and hardware complexity.

  • We propose two new classes of robust blind equalization algorithms against abrupt changes of channel conditions, which we call a triple-mode algorithm(TMA) and an automatic switch-over algorithm(ASA). The conventional DMGSA exhibits slow convergence rates due to the incorrect equalizer tap-updating process under the severe channel conditions. In order to speed up the convergence process, the TMA operates in triple-mode that is based on the dual-mode of the DMGSA incorporated with the tap-updating control modes of the SGA as well as the MSGA. Without resorting to the decision region for selecting the operation mode in the TMA, the ASA automatically switches the blind mode to the smoother conventional decision-directed mode. The ASA uses the error functional that is the weighted sum of the Generalized Sato error and the decision-directed error, where the weights correspond to the channel conditions. Test results on 16-QAM and 8-VSB datas confirm that the TMA and the ASA perform well under the sudden changes of channel conditions.
