  • To determine the test gases for gas appliances of new gas group, the interrelation between gas interchangeability, including thermal efficiency, of 13A gas appliances and present 13A test gases was experimentally investigated. The test results show that the Wobbe indices in the case of incomplete combustion and the flame lifting limit gas for the new gas group are respectively 2% higher than the upper limit and 1% lower than the lower limit of the Wobbe index range. The most suitable composition of R gas is 96 mol% of methane and 4 mol% of propane; LNG could be also used as R gas. Further, analysis results showed that the hydrogen concentration of flash back limit gas could be lowered from 30 vol% to 23 vol%.

  • The objective of this study was to develop a new method for estimating gas interchangeability for 13A gas appliances. The three basic principles for the development of this method are as follows: 1) to derive the secondary interchangeability factor that represents the effect of gas composition, in addition to the major interchangeability factor, i.e., Wobbe index; 2) to test every type of and each maker's domestic gas appliances that are widely used in our country, particularly including premixed gas appliances; and 3) to develop a simple estimation method. On the basis of these principles, thirty representative gas appliances were tested, and as a result, a simple two-dimensional interchangeability diagram consisting of Wobbe index and relative density was developed. Unlike conventional methods for estimating interchangeability, this method can be applied to premixed gas appliances, which have a narrow stable flame range, and the interchangeability range of this method then becomes narrower than that of the conventional methods.

  • This paper is devoted to detecting decomposition characteristics of Iodotrifluoromethane ($CF_3I$) under alternating current (AC) discharges or load current interruptions. The decomposition products are measured utilizing chromatography-mass spectroscopy. It is found that less than 1% $CF_3I$ gas decomposed after several interruptions at load current of 200 A or hundred times of AC discharges. However, under interruptions at a current of 400 A, more than 95% $CF_3I$ gas decomposed into carbon tetrafluoride ($CF_4$) and hexafluoroethane ($C_2F_6$). The equilibrium compositions based on Gibbs free energy minimization of $CF_3I$ was calculated to explain the decomposition mechanism.

  • We present the effect of the critical cooling rate during rapid solidification on the nucleation of precipitates in an Fe75B13P5Nb2Hf1C4 (at.%) alloy. The thermophysical properties of the rapidly solidified Fe75B13P5Nb2Hf1C4 liquids, which were obtained at various cooling rates with various sizes of gas-atomized powder during a high-pressure inert gas-atomization process, were evaluated. The cooling rate of the small-particle powder (≤20 ㎛) was 8.4×105 K/s, which was 13.5 times faster than that of the large-particle powder (20 to 45 mm; 6.2×104 K/s) under an atomized temperature. A thermodynamic calculation model used to predict the nucleation of the precipitates was confirmed by the microstructural observation of MC-type carbide in the Fe75B13P5Nb2Hf1C4 alloy. The primary carbide phase was only formed in the large-particle gas-atomized powder obtained during solidification at a slow cooling rate compared to that of the small-particle powder.

  • A low power methane gas sensor with microheater was fabricated by silicon bulk micromachining technology. In order to heat up the sensing layer to operating temperature, a platinum (Pt) micro heater was embedded in the gas sensor. The line width and gap of the microheater was 20 ${\mu}m$ and 4.5 ${\mu}m$, respectively. Zinc oxide (ZnO) nanowhisker arrays were grown on a sensor from a ZnO seed layer using a hydrothermal method. A 200 ml aqueous solution of 0.1 mol zinc nitrate hexahydrate, 0.1 mol hexamethylenetetramine, and 0.02 mol polyethylenimine was used for growing ZnO nanowhiskers. Temperature distribution of the sensor was analyzed by infrared thermal camera. The optimum temperature for highest sensitivity was found to be $250^{\circ}C$ although relatively high (64%) sensitivity was obtained even at as low a temperature as $150^{\circ}C$. The power consumption was 72 mW at $250^{\circ}C$, and only 25 mW at $150^{\circ}C$.

  • In this study, ZnO nanorods and $SnO_2$-CuO heterogeneous oxide were grown on membrane-type gas sensor platforms and the sensing characteristics for carbon monoxide (CO) were studied. Diaphragm-type gas sensor platforms with built-in Pt micro-heaters were made using a conventional bulk micromachining method. ZnO nanorods were grown from ZnO seed layers using the hydrothermal method, and the average diameter and length of the nanorods were adjusted by changing the concentration of the precursor. Thereafter, $SnO_2$-CuO heterogeneous oxide thin films were grown from evaporated Sn and Cu thin films. The average diameters of the ZnO nanorods obtained by changing the concentration of the precursor were between 30 and 200 nm and the ZnO nanorods showed a sensitivity value of 21% at a working temperature of $350^{\circ}C$ and a carbon monoxide concentration of 100 ppm. The $SnO_2$-CuO heterogeneous oxide thin films showed a sensitivity value of 18% at a working temperature of $200^{\circ}C$ and a carbon monoxide concentration of 100 ppm.

  • Objectives : This study was conducted to evaluate the level of exposure to volatile organic compounds (VOCs) among workers handling rust preventive oils. Methods : A total of 30 bulk samples and 54 personal air samples were collected using diffusive samplers at 22 workplaces handling rust preventive oils in Daegu and Gyongsangbuk-do Province from March to October 2013. We also investigated detailed information on the related work conditions, such as kinds of products, handling methods, local exhaustive ventilation systems, and the status of the wearing personal protective equipment. All bulk samples and air samples were analyzed using gas chromatography mass spectrometry (GC-MS) to identify components to which workers potentially were exposed. Quantitative airborne concentrations of VOCs were confirmed using gas chromatography with flame ionized detectors. Results : In terms of qualitative analyses for the 30 bulk samples, we found carcinogenic, mutagenic and reproductive toxic(CMR) substances such as butane(carcinogenic Group 1A, mutagenic Group 1B), butoxy ethanol(carcinogenic Group 2), cumene (carcinogenic Group 2), ethyl benzene(carcinogenic Group 2), methyl isobutyl ketone(carcinogenic Group 2) and toluene (reproductive toxic, Group 2). As a result of full-shift based personal air samples, eight substances such as n-hexane, n-heptane, octane, nonane, decane, toluene, ethyl benzene and xylene were detected. Among them, n-hexane and n-heptane were detected in all of 54 air samples with $13.13mg/m^3$ and $8.61mg/m^3$ of maximum concentration, respectively. The level of airborne concentration from all of samples were bellow the occupational exposure limit in Korea. Conclusions : Based on the results of this study, workers handling rust preventive oils could be exposed to CMR substances contained in rust preventive oils and n-hexane and n-heptane were found as the most frequent sources of VOC exposure.

  • The gas-phase pyrolysis reactions of 2-alkoxypyrimidines(II), 2-alkoxypyrazines(III), 4-ethoxypyrimidine(IV) and 3-ethoxypyridazine(V) are investigated theoretically using the AM1 MO method. These compounds pyrolyze in a concerted retro-ene process with a six-membered cyclic transition state (TS). The relative order of reactivity if (IV)>(II)>(III)>(V), which can be rationalized by the two effects arising from electron-withdrawing power of the aza-substituent: (ⅰ) Electron withdrawal from the C-O bond accelerates the rate and (ⅱ) electron withdrawal from the $N^1$-atom, that is participating in the six-membered TS, deactivates the reaction. We are unable to explain the experimental result of the greatest reactivity for pyridazine, (V), with our AM1 results. The reactivity increase accompanied by successive methylation of the ethoxy group, ethoxytert-butoxy, is due to a release of steric crowding in the activation process.

  • Purpose : Group A streptococci(GAS) was isolated from the patients with acute pharyngitis. Epidemiological studies using T typing and emm genotyping was performed for GAS and compared with the results of the carriers. Methods : Throat cultures were taken from 246 children(123 boys, 123 girls) from November, 2001 to May, 2002 who visited a pediatrician's office located in Jinju, Gyeongnam province. T types were identified with slide agglutination and emm genotypes were identified with DNA sequencing after amplification of emm genes. Results : One hundred thirty(52.8%) out of 246 children yielded beta-hemolytic streptococci, of which 96.1% were group A. Children from 4 to 7 years old comprised 70.4% of the GAS positive group. T12 were the most common(35.2%) and T non-typeable strains were the next(30.4%). emm12 was most frequent(28.5%), and emm75(18.7%), emm22(13.0%), emm2(12.2%), and emm8(8.1%) were relatively common. Conclusion : Since GAS is so highly prevalent in acute pharyngitis, indeed being half of the population, good clinical practice dictates the systematic employment of throat culture for acute pharyngitis before prescribing antibiotics in a pediatric setting. The distribution of the T antigens and emm genes showed similar pattern between the acute pharyngitis and the carriers.

  • Objectives: The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of asymptomatic carriers of group A ${\beta}-hemolytic$ streptococci (GAS) in children living in a rural community and to investigate the association between episodes of acute pharyngitis and carrier status. Methods: Throat swabs were collected from September to November 2013 among children 5-13 years of age from a rural community (Maria Ignacia-Vela, Argentina). The phenotypic characterization of isolates was performed by conventional tests. Antimicrobial susceptibility was assayed for penicillin, tetracycline, chloramphenicol, erythromycin, and clindamycin (disk diffusion). The minimum inhibitory concentration was determined for penicillin, cefotaxime, tetracycline, and erythromycin. Results: The carriage of ${\beta}-hemolytic$ streptococci was detected in 18.1% of participants, with Streptococcus pyogenes in 18 participants followed by S. dysgalactiae ssp. equisimilis in 5. The highest proportion of GAS was found in 8 to 10-year-old children. No significant association between the number of episodes of acute pharyngitis suffered in the last year and the carrier state was detected (p>0.05). Tetracycline resistance (55.5%) and macrolide-resistant phenotypes (11.1%) were observed. Resistance to penicillin, cefotaxime, or chloramphenicol was not expressed in any streptococcal isolate. Conclusions: The present study demonstrated significant throat carriage of GAS and the presence of group C streptococci (S. dysgalactiae ssp. equisimilis) in an Argentinian rural population. These results point out the need for continuous surveillance of GAS and non-GAS carriage as well as of antimicrobial resistance in highly susceptible populations, such as school-aged rural children. An extended surveillance program including school-aged children from different cities should be considered to estimate the prevalence of GAS carriage in Argentina.
