  • This study proposes a feedforward compensation control method to reduce 120 Hz output voltage ripple in a single-phase AC/DC rectifier system composed of PFC and LLC resonant converters. The proposed method compensates for the voltage ripple of the DC-link by using the AC input and DC output power difference, and then reduces the final output voltage ripple component of 120 Hz through feedforward compensation based on the linearized frequency gain curve of the LLC resonant converter. Through simulation and experimental results, the validity of the ripple reduction performance was verified by comparing the conventional PI controller and the proposed feedforward compensation method.

  • The PV module of solar power systems requires maximum power point tracking (MPPT) technique because the power-voltage and current-voltage characteristics vary depending on the surrounding environment. In addition, the 120 Hz ripple voltage on the DC-Link is caused by the imbalance of the system voltage and current. The effect of this 120 Hz ripple voltage reduces the efficiency of the power generation system by increasing the output current distortion rate. Increasing the capacity of DC-Link can reduce the 120 Hz ripple voltage, but this method is inefficient in price and size. We propose a technique that detects 120 Hz ripple voltage and reduces the effect of ripple voltage without increasing the DC-Link capacity through a controller. The proposed technique was verified through simulations and experiments using a 1 kW single-phase solar power system. In addition, the proposed technique's feasibility was demonstrated by reducing the distortion rate of the output current.

  • This paper proposes a new method to reduce 120Hz output voltage ripple of LLC converter using resonant voltage controller. This method can reduce the 120Hz output voltage ripple with very high gain at this frequency by the resonant controller with previous PI voltage controller. The reason why the voltage ripple can be reduced is explained by the Bode diagram comparing with the previous PI controller. The simulation with Matlab/Simulink is carried out for this resonant controller and the simulation results show that resonant controller can reduce the 120Hz output voltage ripple. Experiments with DSP controller also carried out and the experimental results also show that the usefulness of the proposed voltage controller.

  • When Photovoltaic inverter is connected to grid and used as PVPCS (Photovoltaic Power Conditioning System), 120 Hz AC ripple occurs at the dc-link capacitor voltage. This AC ripple reduces the efficiency of PVPCS and shortens the lifetime of the capacitor. In this paper, we design a notch filter to remove AC ripple. As a result, the AC voltage ripple was removed from the dc link and the THD of the PVPCS output current with the notch filter was lowered. This notch filter is determined by the damping coefficient, the bandwidth coefficient, and the switching frequency. Among these, the switching frequency determines the switching loss and the size of the LC filter, and the PVPCS with the high switching frequency has a greater efficiency loss due to the switching loss than the efficiency improvement by the notch filter. Therefore, it is important to set the optimum switching frequency in the PVPCS with the notch filter applied. In this paper, THD and switching loss of PVPCS output current with notch filter are calculated through simulation, and cost function to calculate optimum switching frequency through data is proposed.

  • This paper presents a technique to reduce the low frequency ripple voltage of the dc output in a BIFRED converter with a small-sized energy storage capacitor. The proposed pulse width control method can be effectively used to suppress the low frequency ripple appeared in the dc output and still shows generally good performance such as low THD of input line current and high power factor. Using the small-sized energy storage capacitor, it has better merits of low cost and small size than a conventional BIFRED converter. The proposed technique is illustrated its validity and effectiveness through simulations.

  • Recently, the LED(Light Emitting Diode) is expected to replace conventional lamps including incandescent, halogen and fluorescent lamps for some general illumination application, due to some obvious features such as high luminous efficiency, safety, long life, environment-friendly characteristics and so on. To drive the LED, a single stage PFC(Power Factor Correction) flyback converter has been adopted to satisfy the isolation, PFC and low cost. The conventional flyback LED driver has the serious disadvantage of high 120Hz output current ripple caused by the PFC operation. To overcome this drawback, a new PFC flyback with low 120Hz output current ripple is proposed in this paper. It is composed of 2 power stages, the DCM(Discontinuous Conduction Mode) flyback converter for PFC and BCM(Boundary Conduction Mode) boost converter for tightly regulated LED current. Since the link capacitor is located in the secondary side, its voltage stress is small. Moreover, since the driver is composed of 2 power stages, small output filter and link capacitor can be used. Especially, since the flyback is operated at DCM, the PFC can be automatically obtained and thus, an additional PFC IC is not necessary. Therefore, only one control IC for BCM boost converter is required. To confirm the validity of the proposed converter, theoretical analysis and experimental results from a prototype of 24W LED driver are presented.

  • A single-phase PVPCS(photovoltaic power conditioning system) that contains a single phase dc-ac inverter tends to draw an ac ripple current at twice the out frequency. Such a ripple current may shorten passive elements life span and worsen output current THD. As a result, it may reduce the efficiency of the whole PVPCS system. In this paper, the ripple current propagation is analyzed, and two methods to reduce the ripple current are proposed. Firslyt, this paper presents notch filter with IP voltage controller to reject specific current ripple in single-phase PVPCS. The notch filter can be designed that suppress just only specific frequency component and no phase delay. The proposed notch filter can suppress output command signal in the ripple bandwidth for reducing output current THD. Secondly, for reducing specific current ripple, the other method is feed-forward compensation to incorporate a current control loop in the dc-dc converter. The proposed notch filter and feed-forward compensation method have been verified with computer simulation and simulation results obtained demonstrate the validity of the proposed control scheme.

  • A light-emitting diode (LED) has been increasingly applied to various industrial fields and general lightings because of its high efficiency, low power consumption, environment-friendly characteristic and long lifetime. To drive the LED lighting, a power converter with the constant output current is needed. Among many power converters, the flyback converter is chosen by many converter designers due to high power density, structural simplicity, and miniaturization. In this converter, an electrolytic capacitor is generally chosen for the stabilization of the DC voltage because of having the large capacitance and the low price. However, the disadvantages are the short expected life time and 120Hz ripple currents on the converter output node. In this paper, a single-stage dimmable PFC DCM flyback converter without the electrolytic capacitor is proposed to prolong the lifetime of the LED driver. For the long lifetime of the converter, the polyester film capacitor with the small capacitance is substituted for the electrolytic capacitor on the output node and an LC resonant filter is added to damp 120Hz ripple current. The proposed converter is verified through the simulation and the experimental works.
