Objectives : The purpose of this study was to investigate the anti-aging effects on cultured human keratinocytes with Nelumbo nucifera extracts. Methods : Each parts of leaves, flowers and stamen were extracted with water or 70% ethanol. These extracts were tested for cell viability on HaCaT cells (human keratinocyte line) by MTT assay. We investigated the effects of Ultraviolet-B (UVB) irradiation on cytotoxicity and lipid peroxidation in cultured skin keratinocytes. Results : The ethanol extract of Nelumbo nucifera flowers showed maximun cell viability as 111.39% in 30 ug/ml concentration. The water extracts of stamen, flowers, leaves showed cell viability as 107.12, 101.65, 101.46%, respectively. HaCaT keratinocytes were survived 63.06% at $20mJ/cm^2$ UVB irradiation. The cell membrane lipid peroxidation was measured by accumulation malondialdehyde (MDA). The levels of MDA were decreased by the ethanol extract of Nelumbo nucifera flowers and the water extracts of stamen. Conclusions : These finding suggest that the ethanol extract of Nelumbo nucifera flowers prevent anti-aging effects on cultured human keratinocytes during UVB irradiation.
The geographic variations of the number and morphology of scutes of eightspine stickleback, Pungitius sinensis, in the southern half of the Korean peninsula were investigated. The two subspecies, P. sinensis sinensis and P. sinensis kaibarae, showed a bit of difference in the number of scutes but there was no geocline as a whole. In the frequencies of individuals with the different number of scutes between the left and right body side, there was also difference between the two subspecies, and the specimens from the Hyongsan River showed great variation. The populations of Kumho River had the largest scutes. But the specimens of the Hyongsan River had small and degenerated scutes different from all other populations, and some individuals showed the semiarmatus type arrangement of scute. Therefore, this population may be called the special type of P. sinensis. In the relationship between the time of landlocking and the size of scutes, it was speculated that the population of the Hyongsan River was landlocked long years ago and other populations of P. sinensis kaibarae except the Kumho River were landlocked more recently. For the population of the Kumho River, however, it seemed that there was no relation between salt tolerance or landlocking and number or developmental state of scutes as this landlocked population had well developed and large number of scutes.
We propose the HBEM(Hybrid Behavior Evolution Model) composed of rule classification and evolutionary neural network using rule descriptor and link descriptor for evolutionary behavior of virtual robots. In our model, two levels of the knowledge of behaviors were represented. In the upper level, the representation was improved using rule and link descriptors together. And then in the lower level, behavior knowledge was represented in form of bit string and learned adapting their chromosomes by the genetic operators. A virtual robot was composed by the learned chromosome which had the best fitness. The composed virtual robot perceives the surrounding situations and they were classifying the pattern through rules and processing the result in neural network and behaving. To evaluate our proposed model, we developed HBES(Hybrid Behavior Evolution System) and adapted the problem of gathering food of the virtual robots. In the results of testing our system, the learning time was fewer than the evolution neural network of the condition which was same. And then, to evaluate the effect improving the fitness by the rules we respectively measured the fitness adapted or not about the chromosomes where the learning was completed. In the results of evaluating, if the rules were not adapted the fitness was lowered. It showed that our proposed model was better in the learning performance and more regular than the evolutionary neural network in the behavior evolution of the virtual robots.

Respiration rate should be a reasonable state variable for the activated sludge and could be used to simulate the performance of the activated sludge process. Toxic materials are classified into three groups, competitive, noncompetitive and uncompetitive. They increase/decrease the half saturation coefficient or specific growth rate. that means decreasing of the substrate removal capacity. In this research, a pilot-scale activated sludge process was operated under extended aeration method, and a representative noncompetitive inhibitor, acidic wastewater was applied to establish a respirometry-based toxicity model. Using this model. the correlation coefficient between measured and calculated respiration rate was 0.96 when acidic wastewater(pH 3.9~5.5) was introduced continuously to the aeration tank. Even though respiration rate was decreased by toxic effect of acidic wastewater, effluent substrate concentration represented to COD was deteriorated just a little bit. It might be caused by the low ratio of readily biodegradable substrate in the input substrate. Reduction of respiration rate by decreasing of input substrate concentration was much lower than that by acidic wastewater, and hence it was estimated that the possibility of false toxic alarm caused by decreasing of substrate concentration should be low.

In this paper, we analyzed and measured the electrical crosstalk characteristics of a triplex transceiver module for ethernet Passive optical networks(EPONS). And we improved the electrical crosstalk levels using Dummy ground lines with signal lines. The triplex transceiver module consists of a laser diode as a transmitter, a digital photodetector as a digital data receiver, and a analog photodetector as a community antenna television signal receiver. And there are integrated on silicon substrate. The digital receiver and analog receiver sensitivity have to meet -24 dBm at $BER=10^{-l2}$ and -7.7 dBm at 44 dB SNR. And the electrical crosstalk levels have to maintain less than -86 dB from DC to 3 GHz. From analysis and measurement results, the proposed silicon substrate structure that contains the Dummy ground line with $100\;{\mu}m$ space from signal lines and separates 4 mm among devices respectively, is satisfied the electrical crosstalk level compared to simple structure. This proposed structure can be easily implemented with design convenience and greatly reduced the silicon substrate size about $50\%$.

A sigma-delta modulator based class-D audio amplifier is presented. Parallel digital input is serialized to two-bit output by a fourth-order digital sigma-delta noise shaper. The output of the digital sigma-delta noise shaper is applied to a fourth-order analog sigma-delta modulator whose three-level output drives power switches. The pulse density modulated (PDM) output of the power switches is low-pass filtered by an LC-filter. The PDM output of the power switches is fed back to the input of the analog sigma-delta modulator. The first integrator of the analog sigma-delta modulator is a hybrid of continuous-time (CT) and switched-capacitor (SC) integrator. While the sampled input is applied to SC path, the continuous-time feedback signal is applied to CT path to suppress the noise of the PDM output. The class-D audio amplifier is fabricated in a standard $0.13-{\mu}m$ CMOS process and operates for the signal bandwidth from 100-Hz to 20-kHz. With 4-${\Omega}$ load, the maximum output power is 18.3-mW. The total harmonic distortion plus noise and dynamic range are 0.035-% and 80-dB, respectively. The modulator consumes 457-uW from 1.2-V power supply.

Diverse multimedia services will be deployed at hand on 3G-and-beyond multi-service CDMA systems in order to satisfy different quality of service (QoS) according to traffic types. In order to use appropriate resources efficiently the call admission control (CAC) as a major resource control mechanism needs to be used to take care of efficient utilization of limited resources. In this paper, we propose a QoS-aware CAC (QCAC) that is enabled to provide service fairness and service differentiation in accordance with priority order and that applies the different thresholds in received power considering different QoS requirements such as different bit error rates (BER) when adopting total received power as the ceil load estimation. The proposed QCAC calculates the different thresholds of the different traffic types based on different required BER applies it for admission policy, and can get service fairness and differentiation in terms of call dropping probability as a main performance metric. The QCAC is aware of the QoS requirement per traffic type and allows admission discrimination according to traffic types in order to minimize the probability of QoS violation. Also the CAC needs to consider the resource allocation schemes such as complete sharing (CS), complete partitioning (CP), and priority sharing(PS) in order to provide fairness and service differentiation among traffic types. Among them, PS is closely related with the proposed QCAC having differently calculated threshold per each traffic type according to traffic priority orders.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the characteristics of high school students' conceptual understanding about minerals and rocks. A questionnaire was developed to examine students' conceptions of minerals and rocks. The data were collected from 93 students in 10th and 119 students in 11th grades in a high school. The result showed that students' understanding of minerals and rock was on the moderate level. The 10th grade students showed a relatively lower level of understanding about igneous rocks while the degree of the 11th graders' understanding about certain concepts related with melting point in the rock domain was a little bit lower than the average. Although the understanding levels between the two grade levels were similar, there were some items for which students understanding seemed to be more sophisticated with the grade. In the questions about the characteristic of basalt surface, however, the frequencies of non-scientific conceptions were not decreased, rather increased along with the grade. It was also found that the conceptions students acquired from other science lessons as well as earth science classrooms did rather interfere with students' construction of the scientific concepts of minerals and rocks even though sometimes they were helpful for learning. It was suggested that the teachers should understand that some specific terms in earth science have different meanings as they were used in other subjects.
The importance of biological resources has been gradually increasing, and mollusks have been utilized as main fishery resources in terrestrial ecosystems. But little is known about genomic and transcriptional analysis in mollusks. This is the first report on the transcriptomic profile of Meretrix lusoria. In this study, we constructed cDNA library and determined 542 of distinct EST sequences composed of 284 singletons and 95 contigs. At first, we identified 180 of EST sequences that have significant hits on protein sequences of the exclusive Mollusks database through BLASTX program and 343 of EST sequences that have significant hits on NCBI NR database. We also found that 211 of putative sequences through local BLAST (blastx, E < e-10) search against KOG database were classified into 16 functional categories. Some kinds of immune response related genes encoding allograft inflammatory factor 1 (AIF-1), B-cell translocation gene 1 (BTG1), C-type lectin A, thioester-containing protein and 26S proteasome regulatory complex were identified. To determine phylogenetic relationship, we identified partial sequences of four genes (COX1, COX2, 12S rRNA and NADH dehydrogenase) that significantly matched with the mitochondrial genomes of 3 species-Ml (Meretrix lusoria), Mp (Meretrix petechialis) and Mm (Meretrix meretrix). As a result, we found that there was a little bit of a difference between sequences of Korean isolates and other known isolates. This study will be useful to develop breeding technology and might also be helpful to establish a classification system.

In the APON(ATM Passive Optical Network), the transmission of the upstream traffic is based on a TDMA(Time Division Multiple Access) method that an OLT(Optical Line Termination) permits ONUs(Optical Network Units) sending cells by allocating time slots. Because the upstream is not a streaming mode, the cell synchronizer has to be operated in the burst mode. Also, the cell phase monitor is required to prevent collisions between cells which are transmitted by multiple ONUs through a single optical fiber. In this paper, a TDMA burst cell synchroniser is implemented with the FPGA(Field Programmable Gate Array) being used in the APON based on G.983.1 for transmitting upstream cells. It has two main functions which are the upstream data recovery and the phase monitoring. The former is to recover the upstream data and clock in the OLT by seeking the preamble which is the overhead of the upstream time slot and by aligning the phase of the bit and cell with the system clock. The latter is to provide the information to the ONU to compensate for the equalization delay by monitoring continuously the phase difference between adjacent cells to avoid the cell collision on the upstream.
