  • Buckwheat (Fagopyrum esculentum Moench), one of the minor crops grown in Korea belonging to the Polygonaceae family, is an annual crop widely cultivated in Asia, Europe, and America and has a character of outcrossing and self-incompatibility. The objective of this study was to analyze the genetic variability, phylogenetic relationships and population structure of buckwheat landraces of Korea using SSR markers. Ten microsatellite markers have been detected from a total of 79 alleles among the 179 buckwheat accessions were collected from Korea. The number of allele per marker locus ($N_A$) ranged from 2 (GB-FE-001, GB-FE-043 and GB-FE-055) to 31 (GB-FE-035) with an average of 7.9 alleles. GB-FE-035 was the most polymorphic with the highest PIC value 0.93. Major allele frequencies ($M_{AF}$) for the 10 polymorphic loci varied from 0.12 to 0.97 with a mean allele frequency of 0.57. The expected heterozygosity ($H_E$) values ranged from 0.05 to 0.94 with an average of 0.53. The observed heterozygosity ($H_O$) ranged from 0.06 to 0.92 with an average of 0.42. The overall polymorphic information contents (PIC) values ranged from 0.05 to 0.93 with an average of 0.48. The landrace accessions of buckwheat used in the present study were not distinctly grouped according to geographic distribution. The study concludes that the results revealed genetic differentiation was low according to the geographic region because of outcrossing and self-incompatibility. We reported that our analyses on the genetic diversity of common buckwheat cultivars of Korea were performed by using of microsatellite markers.

  • The low electric power and high efficiency chips are required because of the appearance of smart phones. Also, high-capacity memory chips are needed. e-MMC(embedded Multi-Media Card) for this is defined by JEDEC(Joint Electron Device Engineering Council). The e-MMC memory for research and development is a memory mulit-chip module of 64GB using 16-multilayers of 4GB NAND-flash memory. And it has simplified the chip by using SIP technique. But mulit-chip module generates high heat by higher integration. According to the result of study, whenever semiconductor chip is about 10 $^{\circ}C$ higher than the design temperature it makes the life of the chip shorten more than 50%. Therefore, it is required that we solve the problem of heating value and make the efficiency of e-MMC improved. In this study, geometry of 16-multilayered structure is compared the temperature distribution of four different geometries along the numerical analysis. As a result, it is con finned that a multilayer structure of stair type is more efficient than a multilayer structure of vertical type because a multi-layer structure of stair type is about 9 $^{\circ}C$ lower than a multilayer structure of vertical type.

  • A complete high-frequency small-signal circuit model of a 40 Gb/s butterfly electroabsorption modulator integrated laser module is presented for the first time to analyze and optimize its electro-optic (E/O) response and reflection characteristics. An agreement between measured and simulated results demonstrates the accuracy and validity of the procedures. By optimizing the bonding wire length and the impedance of the coplanar waveguide transmission lines, the E/O response increases approximately 5% to 15% from 20 GHz to 33 GHz, while the signal injection efficiency increases from approximately 15% to 25% over 18 GHz to 35 GHz.

  • This paper introduces adaptive PRML (Partial Response Maximum Likelihood) architecture with PR (a,b,c,d,e) channel type for the improved readability of high-density optical discs with capacity greater than 30GB. The proposed PRML architecture consists of an adaptive equalizer, a Viterbi detector and a channel identifier. Detailed description for each component is included. The architecture is implemented in chip and also confirmed its performance on the test board mounting the chip. Test results show that the proposed 5-tap PRML architecture is well operated, and less than $2{\times}10^{-4}$ of BER (Bit Error Rate) is achieved with radial and tangential tilt margin of ${\pm}0.6^{\circ}$ on self-made 30GB BD at 1x speed.

  • In VLBI(Very Long Baseline Interferometry), the observed data created in many observatories which are far away from each other should be collected in correlation center for data analysis. Traditionally, observed data is moved by transportation such as car or airplane. But it is replaced with data transfer over the network rapidly as the advancement of information technology, and therefore, international cooperative research is also now more widely expanding. e-KVN(electronic Korean VLBI Network) has been upgraded two times so the network interface of KVN has been evolved to the highest specification of 100GbE. During this time period, the portion of network usage for VLBI observations and experiments in KVN has been increased exponentially. In this paper, we describe KVN VLBI system and network technology for the performance upgrade and advanced status monitoring between three radio astronomy observatories and Daejeon correlation center with KREONET(Korea Research Environment Open NETwork). Furthermore, future plan of e-KVN for the implementation of wide band VLBI observation will be also briefly discussed.

  • This study was carried out to commercialize FTTH by developing a burst mode optical receiver for E-PON. The optical receiver was manufactured by minimizing the capacitance of a photodiode to improve sensitivity for meeting 10, 20 km OLT Rx standard of E-PON at the transmission speed of 1.25 Gb/s. When bit-error ratio is $10^{-12}$ and PRBS is $2^5-1$, sensitivity is -26 dBm, loud/soft ratio is 23 dB. Both preamble time and guard time were set to 102.4 ns (128 bit). After comparing a photodiode whose capacitance is 0.53 pF with another photodiode whose capacitance has been minimized to 0.26 pF, we could see that sensitivity improved to 0.7 dBm and so did bandwidth to 190 MHz of burst mode for the optical receiver manufactured by the photodiode whose capacitance is 0.26 pF.

  • The front-end system having a capable of 2x reading and writing of BD-R/Ra/ROM is developed. Its readability is improved by adopting 5-tap adaptive partial response maximum likelihood (PRML) with the PR(a,b,c,d,e) type channel. Due to the proposed PRML, less than $2{\times}10^{-4}$ of the bit error rate (BER) is achieved with radial and tangential tilt margin of over${\mp}0.6{\circ}$ on 25GB disc in 2x speed. The method of an optimum Power control (OPC) for stable writing of various BD-R/RE is proposed. The developed chip contains 14-million transistors in a $60mm^2$ dies, and is fabricated in $0.18-{\mu}m$ CMOS technology.

  • This study was to investigate the effect of salt stress on physiological characteristics such as plant growth, photosynthesis, solutes related to osmoregulation of Beta vulgaris. A significant increase of dry weight was observed in 50 mM and 100 mM NaCl. The contents of Chl a, b and carotenoid were lower in NaCl treatments than the control. On 14 day after NaCl treatment, photosynthetic rate (PN), the transpiration rate (E) and stomatal conductance of CO2 (gs) were reduced by NaCl treatment. On 28 day after NaCl treatment, the significant reduction in gs and E was shown in NaCl 200 mM. However, PN and water use efficiency (WUE) in all NaCl treatments showed higher value than that of control. Total ion contents (TIC) and osmolality were higher than the control. On 14 day after treatment, the contents of proline (Pro) increased significantly in 200 mM and 300 mM NaCl concentration compared with control, whereas on 28 day in all treatments it was lower than that of the control. The contents of glycine betaine (GB) increased with the increase of NaCl concentration. The contents of Na+, Cl-, GB, osmolality and TIC increased with the increase of NaCl concentrations. These results suggested that under severe NaCl stress conditions, NaCl treatment did not induce photochemical inhibition on fluorescence in the leaves of B. vulgaris, but the reduction of chlorophyll contents was related in a decrease in leaf production. Furthermore, increased GB as well as Na+ and Cl- contents resulted in a increase of osmolality, which can help to overcome NaCl stress.

  • Purpose: Although an increased incidence of gallbladder (GB) stone formation after gastrectomy has been reported, its etiology remains uncertain. The goal of this study was to explore the incidence of gallstone formation after gastrectomy in gastric cancer patients and investigate the risk factors therein. Materials and Methods: Medical records of patients who underwent curative gastrectomy, performed by a single surgeon between August 2012 and December 2015 at the Asan Medical Center, were retrospectively reviewed. Baseline characteristics and surgical outcomes, including GB stone gallstone formation after gastrectomy, were analyzed. Results: Of 561 patients included in the study, 36 presented with GB stone formation after gastrectomy for gastric cancer. The incidence of gallstone formation was 6.4%. The mean interval between gallstone formation and gastrectomy was 21.9 months. In multivariate analyses, the incidence of gallstone formation increased in patients 63 years or older, with greater than 6.2 kg weight loss in the first 6 months after the procedure, a preoperative serum total bilirubin level greater than 0.5 mg/dL, and in patients who did not receive adjuvant chemotherapy. Conclusions: This study presented risk factors for GB stone formation after gastric cancer surgery, and special attention should be afforded to patients with such risk factors.
