  • Rainfall-runoff model is usually used in estimating the design flood, and the most important elements in this model are probable rainfall and unit hydrograph. So, it is the most important step to estimate probable rainfall reasonably and exactly. If a basin area exceeds a certain scale, probable areal rainfall should be used as probable rainfall, but, Probable point- mean rainfall be usually used in Korea. Consequently, probable rainfall is used too high and unit hydrograph is used relatively too low. Thus the improvement is unavoidable. So, in this study, the parameters are proposed that transform the 1day, 2day rainfall to 24hr, 48hr rainfall, and areal rainfall data series are composed by using the same time rainfall data. Also, the areal reduction factor(ARF) is developed as the increase of area by the calculated probable point mean rainfall and probable areal rainfall by frequency analysis in Han-River basin. It can be the measure to easily transform probable point- mean rainfall to probable areal rainfall.

  • This study investigated impacts of the two different types of El Ni$\tilde{n}$o on summer rainfall (June-September) in the Han River and its sub-basins. The patterns of rainfall anomalies show a remarkable difference between conventional El Ni$\tilde{n}$o and El Ni$\tilde{n}$o Modoki years. During conventional El Ni$\tilde{n}$o years, it was found that the Han River basins show decreases in the seasonal rainfall totals with high variations (CV=0.4). In contrast, during El Ni$\tilde{n}$o Modoki years, distinct positive anomalies appear in the Han River basin with a relatively small variation (CV=0.23). In addition, 11 out of 30 sub-basins show significant above-normal rainfall in southern part of the Han River Basin. For El Ni$\tilde{n}$o Modoki years, the number of heavy rainy days exceeding 30 mm/day and 50 mm/day were 9.9-day and 5.4-day, respectively. Consequently, this diagnostic study confirmed that El Ni$\tilde{n}$o Modoki has significant impacts on the variability of summer rainfall over the Han River Basin. We expect the results presented here provide useful information for the stability of the regional water supply system, especially for basins like the Han River Basin showing relatively high variability in seasonal rainfall.

  • Forest recreation is done outdoor, so weather has impact on forest recreation. Impact of temperature on forest recreation has been studied. However, impact of precipitation on forest recreation has not been studied yet. This article paid attention to rainfall and rainy day among the variables explaining the visitor number of national park. We analyzed whether rainfall and rainy day have impact on visitor number. As the result of analysis, rainy day had impact on the visitor number of national park in Korea, and the degree of the impact was inelastic. However, rainfall could not explain the visitor number of national park. It is needed to monitor the impact of precipitation on forest recreation demand.

  • This study is a research results about flow characteristics of debris flow mobilized from landslides such as initiation, transportation and deposition. As results of slope stability analyses at sites studied, the safety factors in rainy period are decreased drastically in comparisons with those in dry period so that the effect of rainfall on initiation of debris flow is known to be significant. From results of analyzing rainfall data, debris flow occurred as previous rainfall accumulated during 2 weeks was more than 526mm, the maximum rainfall intensity being more than 34mm/hr and the day rainfall being more than 171mm/day. As results of analyzing topology of channel debris flow running, the angle of slope where debris flow initiated was in the range of $36{\sim}39^{\circ}$. For area of channel debris flow being transporting the angle of channel was in the range of $11{\sim}36^{\circ}$. The angle of channel where debris flow started to be deposited was found to be in the range of $5{\sim}10^{\circ}$.

  • This study aims to investigate the difference of synoptic characteristics over East Asia according to the persistence of rainfall in Korea during the Changma season (June and July). In the cases of consecutive rainfall which lasts four or more days, there are developed ridges in 850hPa level east of the Korean peninsula which introduce stagnation of the synoptic cyclone over Korea. An cold area in 850hPa level moves southward from the Northern China in one day before the beginning the rainfall day in Korea and it aids the development of the stationary front in East Asia. When rainfall lasts a day or two, cyclones pass over Korea in rainy day and the stationary front in East Asia is not intensified. In both cases the synoptic cyclones near the Korean peninsula shows a deep-baroclinic structure, while in the former cases over the southwestern part of Japan a subtropical frontal zone which has a shallow structure appears near Japan. In latter cases the frontal structures are same near Korea and Japan. So, this means that the Changma is not necessarily similar to the Baiu of Japan in all cases.

  • In this study, sample collection and quantification analysis of Tire and Road Wear Particles (TRWP) from the road surface were conducted to predict the amount of TRWP generated on the road surface moving by environmental compartment depending on rainfall intensity. Samples were collected from TRWP remaining on the road surface two days after the 3 days average rainfall (0-60 mm/day) occurred and the road surface was completely dry. Only TRWP were separated from the collected samples through size and density separation, and the difference in the content of TRWP remaining on the road surface after rainfall was based on the value of 60.2 g o f TRWP o n a day witho ut rain (0 mm/day). By calculating, it was co nfirmed that 0-49.4 g o f TRWP can mo ve to the environmental compartment depending on the intensity of rainfall. In addition, it was confirmed that when the rainfall intensity was 60 mm/day, the amount of TRWP moving to each environmental section was 3.75 times higher compared to 5 mm/day, and using the results of previous research, the total amount of TRWP that can be transported to the environmental compartment by rainfall from the domestic road environment annually is 9,592 tons, and 288 tons of this can be affected by marine microplastics. However, this study has limitations in terms of limited space and predicted results, but it would like to mention the need to improve the domestic road environment and sewage treatment system to reduce TRWP. In the future, we plan to conduct sample collection and concentration analysis studies of TRWP in real environmental compartments to verify the results of this study.

  • The purpose of this study is to suggest the management criteria through the decision tree analysis for a seepage, which is an important instrumentation type of the fill dam. In the case of the seepage of the dam in Korea, seepage can be increased rapidly because rainfall directly flow into the downstream slope and abutment of dam during rainfalls. Therefore, it is necessary the management criteria for the seepage of the fill dam in consideration of rainfall. In this study, decision tree analysis was performed for a fill dam in Korea by setting the seepage as the response variable and the rainfall and water level of dam as explanatory variables. As the study results, the water level acted as an explanatory variable from the conditions under daily rainfall of 34.75 mm/day, and the branch conditions of the water level were analyzed to be 37.4 m and 35.23 m. 98% of the rainfall data is distributed under the conditions of the daily rainfall of 34.75 mm/day, and coverage of the seepage is indicated from 13.25 L/min to 24.24 L/min. When the rainfall and water level as the influence factors for the seepage were selected, the influence of the rainfall was dominant. Finally, the seepage of fill dam by considering the rainfall and water level was suggested as a management criteria.

  • In this study, an Excel-based model (ROADMOD) was developed to estimate pollutant loading from the road and evaluate BMPs. ROADMOD employs the Chezy-Manning equation and empirical expression for estimating surface runoff, and power function for pollutant buildup, and exponential function for pollutant washoff in SWMM. The results of model calibration for buildup and washoff using observed data revealed a good match between the simulation results and the observed data. The long-term surface runoff and sediment simulated by ROADMOD demonstrated a good match with those by SWMM with 2 ~ 14% of relative error. The shorter sweeping interval (within 8 days) remarkably decreased sediment loads from the road. It was found that the effect of reducing sediment loads from the road was greatly affected not only by the sweeping interval but also by sweeping on the day before a rainfall event. The 48% of removal efficiency of sediment loads from the road was achieved with 26 times of road sweeping per year when sweeping was performed on the day before the rainfall event. A 4-day sweeping interval showed similar removal efficiency (48%) with 96 times of sweeping per year. It is considered that the road sweeping on the day before a rainfall event could maximize the effect of reducing the non-point source pollution from the road with minimization of the number of road sweeping. So, the road sweeping on the day before a rainfall event can be considered as one of the useful and best management practices (BMPs) on road.

  • This study has analyzed the concentration variation of four air pollutants ($PM_{10}$, $NO_2$, CO, and $SO_2$) during the typhoon periods over 10 years (2002~2011). In this study, 10 typhoon events which had rainfalls in Korean Peninsula were selected during the study period. The analysis was performed using the observation data of both the air pollutants and rainfall. In order to examine and compare the concentrations of the air pollutants between normal periods and typhoon periods, we have obtained monthly average concentrations from July to September and daily average concentrations during typhoon periods. For the period from July to September, 34% of the total rainfalls can be explained by typhoons, and the concentration of air pollutants during the typhoon period was lower than the normal period. In addition, the concentration variations of the pollutants during the typhoon period were analyzed according to two categories: differences in the concentrations between the day before and the day of the typhoon (Case 1) and between the day before and after the typhoon (Case 2). The results indicated that the reduction rate of $PM_{10}$, $NO_2$, CO, and $SO_2$ was 30.1%, 17.9%, 11.6%, 9.7% (Case 1) and 22.8%, 21.0%, 9.0%, 8.0% (Case 2), respectively. This result suggested that air quality was significantly improved during the typhoon period than after the typhoon period by the rainfall.
