  • The purpose of this study is to identify difference in motivation of move to senior cohousing communities in Sweden during 10 years between the year of 2001 and 2010 by a longitudinal study. Questionnaire survey was used for the study. 313 data were collected from 12 senior cohousing communities, which were established by residents-initiated process. It includes 8 of Senior g${\aa}$rden cohousings in 2001 and 4 of +40 cohousings in 2010 nationwide in Sweden. The result indicates that there are significant differences in motivation of move to senior cohousing between 2001 and 2010. Comparing motivation of move to senior cohousing during 10 years, respondents of 2010 focus more on social merits than practical merits of cohousing as they move to cohousing communities. They stress more to the reasons as good contacts with neighbors, mutual supports, sharing common activities and getting rid of loneliness rather than burden of housing and garden management, and universal-designed house. The result of this study reveals motivation of move to senior cohousing has been changed during 10 years in Sweden.

  • The purpose of this study was to explore the developmental patterns of self-concept of pre-adolescents and adolescents by using the longitudinal data originated by the Korean Institute for Research in the Behavioral Sciences (KIRBS). Specifically, using Structural Equation Modeling (SEM), the effects of parents and peer groups on the stability and change of self-concept were examined across a 9-year-period. The subjects were 62 children(29 boys and 33 girls) from the KIRBS longitudinal data. The results showed that, peer relationships revealed consistent effects on children's self-concept from pre-adolescence to mid-adolescence. In particular, this influence was most evident at 7 years of age and at 16 years of age. However, parental influence was almost non-existent for 7-year-olds, equivalent to peer relationships for 10-year-olds, and decreased for 16-year-olds. On the whole, parental and peer influence on self-concept gradually decrease in adolescence. Nevertheless, parental and peer influence continue to maintain a certain level of influence from childhood to adolescence. This study provides an understanding of developmental change and stability in the self-concept of Korean adolescents.

  • The purpose of this study was to analyze characteristics and patterns of 'better class' by using the longitudinal text mining big data analysis technique from subjective lecture evaluation comments. First, this study classified upper 30% classes to deduce certain characteristics and patterns from every five-year subjective text data for 10 years. A total of 47,177courses (100%) from spring semester 2005 to fall semester 2014 were analyzed from a university at a metropolitan city in the mid area of South Korea. This study extracted meaningful words such as good, course, professor, appreciation, lecture, interesting, useful, know, easy, improvement, progress, teaching material, passion, and concern from the order of frequency 2005-2009. The other set of words were class, appreciation, professor, good, course, interesting, understanding, useful, help, student, effort, thinking, not difficult, explanation, lecture, hard, pleasant, easy, study, examination, like, various, fun, and knowledge 2010-2014. This study suggests that the characteristics and patterns of 'better class' at college, should be analyzed according to different academic code such as liberal arts, fine arts, social science, engineering, math and science, and etc.

  • This study examined the causal relationship between a mothers' depression and the emotional problems of their preschool-aged children as indicated by anxiety, depression and emotional reactivity. We analyzed data from 1,528 mothers and their children from the Panel Study of Korean Children (PSKC) collected when the children were 4 years old and 5 years old. Autoregressive cross-lagged modeling was conducted using AMOS ver. 23.0 to investigate the longitudinal reciprocal effects between mothers' depression and children's emotional problems. The results indicated that both mothers' depression and children's emotional problems were relatively stable between the ages of 4 to 5. There were significant cross-lagged effects from the mothers' depression to children's emotional problems and from children's emotional problems to mothers' depression. Mothers reported higher levels of depression when the children were 4 years old and the children showed more anxiety, depression and emotional reactivity when they were 5 years old. Emotional problems when the children were 4 predicted greater depression among mothers 1 year later. We also examined the group difference (between boys and girls) in the study model. Gender differences were not statistically supported. The results suggested that early assessment and intervention for mothers' depression and children's emotional problems are essential for a healthy mother-child relationship and later child outcomes.

  • Background: To investigate the association between regular physical exercise and falling experience for 2 years and fear of falling (FOF) in Korean middle-aged and elderly population. Methods: Data from the Korean Longitudinal Study on Aging was used and 3,871 participants who exercised regularly were included at 2006 and follow-up until 2018. An analysis was performed to investigate the association between exercise (exercise time per week and duration) and falls (experience over past 2 years and FOF) using the generalized estimating equation model. Results: Compared to those who exercised more than 5 hours a week (reference group), those who exercised less than 3 hours were more likely to experience falls and FOF (odds ratio [OR], 1.334; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.059-1.682; OR, 1.218; 95% CI, 1.119-1.326, respectively). Compared to the group who exercised for more than 5 years, those who exercised for less than 1 year were more likely to experience FOF (OR, 1.310; 95% CI, 1.162-1.478). Conclusion: This study showed that there was a negative relationship between physical exercise time and falling experience and FOF in Korean 45 years or more community-dwelling adults. Based on these results, physical activity can be expected to have a positive effect on fall prevention, which implies the need for policy and research on long-term physical activity programs.

  • The current study examined the effects of early social support of first-time mothers on the home environment for their preschool-aged children via the mediation of mothers' depression. The study sample included 755 first-time mothers participating in the Panel Study on Korean Children(PSKC). Using Structural Equation Modeling(SEM), the longitudinal structure from mothers' social support when the child is one year old to the quality of the home environment when the child is 4 years old was examined. The results revealed that mothers' social support at age 1 predicted social support at age 3, which in turn predicted higher quality of the home environment for their children at age 4. The mediation of depression was also significant. Mothers' social support predicted lower levels of depression at both phases and mothers' depression was significantly associated with the quality of the home environment.

  • Objectives: While epidemiologic research indicates that the prevalence of risk-taking behaviors including cigarette smoking among young people with asthma is substantial, the longitudinal patterns of cigarette smoking in this vulnerable population have received little attention. The aim of this study was to evaluate differences in the longitudinal trajectories of cigarette use behaviors from adolescence to adulthood between young people with and without asthma. Methods: Data from the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent to Adult Health (Add Health) during the years 1994 to 1995 (Wave I, adolescence), 2001 to 2002 (Wave III, young adulthood), and 2007 to 2008 (Wave IV, adulthood) were analyzed (n=12 244). Latent growth curve models were used to examine the longitudinal trajectories of cigarette use behaviors during the transition to adulthood according to asthma status. Results: Regardless of asthma status, the trajectory means of cigarette use behaviors were found to increase, and then slightly decrease from adolescence to adulthood. In total participants, there were no statistically significant differences in initial levels and changes in cigarette use behaviors according to asthma status. However, in select sex and race subgroups (i.e., females and non-whites), former asthmatics showed greater escalation in cigarette use behaviors than did non-asthmatics or current asthmatics. Conclusions: This study indicated that the changing patterns of cigarette use behaviors during the transition to adulthood among young people with asthma are comparable to or even more drastic than those among young people without asthma.

  • In recent years, Korean medical schools have shown a growing interest in the longitudinal integrated clerkship (LIC) as a means of improving clinical education. Some overseas medical schools have tried the LIC since the 1970s. In the 1990s, several universities in the United States, Canada, and Australia introduced LICs. A variety of studies have confirmed positive results of the LIC. Traditional block-rotation is a discipline-based, inpatient-centered practice. Instead, under the LIC system, a medical student responsible for a panel of longitudinal patients observes developments of their diseases, serving several departments simultaneously. Overseas medical schools have different LIC models depending on their affiliate hospitals' sizes and characteristics. The purpose of this study is to introduce LIC practices in Harvard Medical School and University of California San Francisco, which could be applied by Korean medical schools. This paper also aims to find out the strategies that have been able to help the two US medical schools implement the LIC successfully.

  • Purpose: This study examined the influence of longitudinal arch on the strength and muscle activity of the abductor hallucis in the standing position in subjects with and without navicular drop signs. Methods: A sample of 34 subjects with and without navicular drop signs between 22 and 28 years of age were enrolled in this study. The strength and muscle activity of the abductor hallucis was measured using a tensiometer. The Smart KEMA System and electromyography device was used on the subjects with and without navicular drop signs. Two groups were classified using the navicular drop test to identify the longitudinal arch of the foot. The strength of the abductor hallucis was evaluated in standing, both with and without an external arch support condition. The two-way mixed ANOVA was used. The level of statistical significance was set to ${\alpha}=0.05$. Results: The strength and muscle activity of the abductor hallucis in standing was significantly higher with external arch support than that without the external arch support in the group with navicular drop signs. There was no significant difference in the abductor hallucis strength and muscle activity with and without external arch support in the subjects without navicular drop signs. Conclusions: The strength and muscle activity of the abductor hallucis in standing can be influenced by the external arch support in the group with navicular drop signs. The strength measurement of the abductor hallucis in standing should be separately performed in conditions with and without longitudinal arch of foot.
