  • In this research, we have developed a ski-simulation system based on a physics-based simulation model using Newton's second law of motion. Key parameters of the model, which estimates skier's trajectory, speed and acceleration change due to skier's control on ski plate and posture changes, were derived from a field test study performed on real ski slope. Skier's posture and motion were measured by motion capture system composed of 13 high speed IR camera, and skier's control and pressure distribution on ski plate were measured by acceleration and pressure sensors attached on ski plate and ski boots. Developed ski-simulation model analyzes user's full body and center of mass using a depth camera(Microsoft Kinect) device in real time and provides feedback about force, velocity and acceleration for user. As a result, through the development of interactive ski-simulation motion recognition system, we accumulated experience and skills based on physics models for development of sports simulator.

  • In this paper, we study the applicability of Tuned Mass Damper(TMD) to improve seismic performance of piping system under earthquake loading. For this purpose, a mode analysis of the target pipeline is performed, and TMD installation locations are selected as important modes with relatively large mass participation ratio in each direction. In order to design the TMD at selected positions, each corresponding mode is replaced with a SDOF damped model, and accordingly the corresponding pipeline is converted into a 2-DOF system by considering the TMD as a SDOF damped model. Then, optimal design values of the TMD, which can minimize the dynamic amplification factor of the transformed 2-DOF system, are derived through GA optimization method. The proposed TMD design values are applied to the pipeline numerical model to analyze seismic performance with and without TMD installation. As a result of numerical analyses, it is confirmed that the directional acceleration responses, the maximum normal stresses and directional reaction forces of the pipeline system are reduced, quite a lot. The results of this study are expected to be used as basic information with respect to the improvement of the seismic performance of the piping system in the future.

  • In recent years, there's been strong demand for coastal structures that have a permeability that serves water affinity and disaster prevention from wave attack. The aim of this study is to examine the wave transformation, including wave run-up that propagates over the coastal structures with a steep slope. A numerical model based on the nonlinear shallow water equation, together with the unsteady nonlinear Darcy law for fluid motion in permeable underlayer and laboratory measurements was carried out in terms of the free surface elevations and fluid particle velocities for the cases of regular and irregular waves over 1:5 impermeable and permeable slopes. The numerical results were used to evaluate the application and limitations of the PBREAK numerical model. The numerical model could predict the cross-shore variation of the wave profile reasonably, but showed less accurate results in the breaking zone that the mass and momentum influx is exchanged the most. Except near the wave crest, the computed depth averaged velocities could represent the measured profile below the trough level fairly well.

  • The dynamic characteristics of a bridge deduced by using the modeling techniques depend on its stiffness and mass calculated from its geometric model. This research develops the FE modeling techniques for a steel plate girder bridge with composite section. and proves their validity by comparing the results with those from actual measurement. The FE modeling techniques are divided into two categories--a simplified one and two-dimensional model and a detailed three-dimensional model. In the meantime, the dynamic responses of the bridge tested for this research were measured by the ambient vibration some of accelerometers were been attached to its upper slab girder under normal traffic load. The Cross Power Spectrum obtained from the measurement was used to analyze the dynamic characteristics by natural excitation techniques. The analytic results are compared to those of each FE modeling, and thereby the modeling techniques were proved to be valid.

  • Large-capacity of household washing machine can become unbalanced during the dehydration process. To solve this problem, several types of suspensions have been installed in a washing machine. In this study, physical tests were carried out on a frictional suspension, and the nonlinear characteristics were modeled by combining several simple physical models. The parameters were estimated based on the least squares solution. The simulation and test results were compared to verify the validity of the friction damper model.

  • To predict the qualitative performance characteristics of Stirling Engines, an analytical approach to the Ideal Adiabatic Model set up by Urieli et al. has been treated. First, volume variations of both the expansion and the compression cylinders are approximated to piecewise linear function of the crank angle, which make it possible to specify the mass flow direction of each cylinder a priori to solve a set of basic equation. In consequences, an engine cycle can be considered as a combination of 4-type fundamental process. For each process, pressure is obtained as a solution of the algebraic equation. Application of the cyclic steady condition to the whole cycle completes the analysis. Further investigations result in analytical expressions for cyclic heat and work in terms of dependent variables determined from the pressure. The results are expected useful in establishing the preliminary design conditions of Stirling Engines.

  • When a body enters waters, its original kinetic energy or momentum is distributed among the body and surrounding water in the form of added mass. Due to the transfer of the energy or momentum, the bode is subjected to the hydrodynamic impact forces and acceleration. This impact behavior can be an important criterion of submersible vehicle launched to the air. In this paper, based on Life-boat model, an approximate method is proposed for the evaluation of the forces and responses of cylindrical rigid bode by water entry impact. The impact forces are calculated by yon Karman's momentum theory and motion responses the body, especially acceleration, are calculated by a numerical integration of the motion equations derived by hydrodynamic force equilibrium. The proposed method is expected to be a simple but efficient tool lot the preliminary design or motion analysis of a body subjected to water entry impact.

  • The dynamic ice forces on a structure with vertical wall and the corresponding responses of the structure are predicted. The structure was simplified as a 1-degree-of freedom system which consists of spring-mass-damper. Ice was divided into two parts : near filed and far field. In the near field, ice sheet moves with constant speed. The results obtained from the numerical simulation using the model and the experiment of indentation with stiff and flexible structures are compared. The comparisons show that the model can predict the behavior of structure and ice load with accuracy.
