  • There has been a lot of studies to identify the driving forces of energy consumption. Many of them decomposed the final energy consumption into the intensity effect, structural effect, and production effect. Those approach, however, could not consider the transformation loss during the electric power generation. Therefore, in this study, we conducted a decomposition analysis on the primary energy use basis to reflect that transformation loss. Log mean Divisia index and refined Laspeyres methods were used for the index decomposition. As results, we could find out that the difference between two approaches were definite. The intensity effect in 2011 is -0.607 times against 1981 in the final energy case, but -0.236 times in the primary energy case. The structure effect in 2011 is 0.227 times against 1981 in the final energy case, but 0.434 times in the primary energy case. Therefore, an analysis on the primary energy basis is essential when conducting a decomposition analysis.

  • As energy conservation can be realized through changes in the composition of goods and services consumed, there is a need to assess indirect and total household energy requirements. The Korean household sector was responsible for about 55% of the country's primary energy requirement in the period from 1990 to 2000. And more than 60% of household energy requirement was indirect. Thus, indirect and total rather than direct household energy requirements should be the target of energy conservation policies. Increases in household consumption expenditure were responsible for a relatively high growth of energy consumption. Switching to consumption of less energy intensive products and decrease in energy intensities of products contributed substantially to reduce the increase in total household energy requirement.

  • As energy conservation can be realized through changes in the composition of goods and services consumed, there is a need to assess indirect and total household energy consumption. The Korean household sector was responsible for more than 55% of Korea's total energy consumption in the 1995 to 2010 period. More than 69% of household energy consumption was indirect. Thus, not only direct but also indirect household energy consumption should be the target of energy conservation. Electricity consumption became in 2009 the main source of household energy consumption in Korea. Households consume more and more electricity intensive goods and services, a sign of increasing living standards. Decrease in energy intensities of products consumed by Korean households contributed greatly to reduce the increase in the total household energy consumption. However, switching took place towards more energy intensive products, thus the structure effect was negative. It is necessary to direct consumption and production towards much less energy intensive goods and services as to reduce energy consumption or its growth rate. The Korean government should readjust low energy and electricity prices to cost-reflective prices levels as these low prices are one of the main reasons for the consumption of more energy intensive products. This study differentiates prices of oil products and electricity between households and industries, as to allow more accurate estimation.

  • In this paper, we attempted to suggest a way to evaluate appropriateness and efficiency for the energy consumption structure. For this, based on Markowitz (1952)' mean-variance portfolio model, we constructed an optimal fossil fuel mix. In constructing the optimal mix, we first defined returns on fossil fuels (oil, coal and natural gas) as TOE (Ton of Oil Equivalent) per $1. Then, by using the dynamic latent common factor model, we decomposed the growth rates of the returns on each fossil fuel into two parts : the common part and the idiosyncratic part. Finally, based on the results from the dynamic latent common factor model, we constructed the optimal fossil fuel mix implied by the mean-variance portfolio model. Our results indicate that for the fossil fuel mix to be on the efficient frontier, it is crucial to reduce oil consumption as low as possible. Moreover, our results imply that it is more efficient to increase natural gas consumption rather than coal consumption in reducing oil consumption. These results are in line with the strategies for the future energy consumption structure pursued by Korea and indicate that reduction in oil use can improve overall efficiency in energy consumption.

  • This study constructs a bayesian neoclassical DSGE model that applies oil usage. The model includes technology shocks, oil price shocks, and shocks to energy policies as exogenous driving forces. First, this study aims to analyze the roles of these exogenous shocks in the Korean business cycle. Second, this study examines the effects of long-term changes in the energy consumption structure, including the reduction in oil use as a share of energy consumption and improvement in oil efficiency. In the case of oil price shocks, results show that these shocks exert recessionary pressure on the economy in line with those obtained in the previous literature. On the other hand, shocks to energy policies, which reduce oil consumption per capital, result in opposite consequences to oil price shocks, decreasing oil consumption. Also, counterfactual exercises show that long-term changes in the energy consumption structure would mitigate the contractionary effects of oil price shocks.

  • So far, the phenomenon of "electrification" has been deepened in Korean industry and especially direct heating energy which accounted for 44.0%(2010) of total energy consumed in Korean manufacturing has been significantly electrified. This paper decomposed electricity consumption for direct heating in Korean manufacturing from 1992 to 2012 using LMDI(Log Mean Divisia Index). This paper includes 4 different factors such as electricity proportion effect, direct heating proportion effect, energy intensity effect and added value effect. And this paper compared the consumption pattern by business type. As results, electricity proportion effect had contributed the most to the increase of electricity consumption for direct heating in Korean manufacturing. And Petrol-Chemical and Iron & Steel had the most electrification of direct heating.
