Exposure Assessment for Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons in the Model Menu System of Korean (한국인의 모델식이에 대한 다환방향족탄화수소류(PAHs)의 인체노출량평가)

  • This study was conducted to compare and estimate the daily PAHs dietary intake from both home-cooking and dining-out, through approach of model diet used in exposure assessment of food contaminants. Food commodities reflecting in model diet were selected from the KHIDI report and were analysed in cooked or uncooked edible forms using HPLC-Fluorscence Detector. The PAHs dietary intake comparison between home-cooking and dining-out was based on one meal intake suggested in model diet and PAHs dietary intake was estimated by using food consumption rate and body weight of the Korean adult group. The daily PAHs dietary intake was calculated by permutation and combination method with assumption that a person consumed 2 meals from home-cooking menu and 1 meal from dining-out menu. The total PAHs levels in 36 food commodities with 200 samples were ranged from 2.00 ug/kg to 141.28 ug/kg and a food showing the highest PAHs level was the stir-fried anchovy. The $TEQ_{BaP}$ levels of PAHs were calculated using benzo(a)pyrene equivalents individual congener level and corresponding TEF value and the $TEQ_{BaP}$ level were ranged from $0.03\;ugTEQ{BaP}$ to $1.31\;ugTEQ_{BaP}$ and a food showing the highest $TEQ_{BaP}$ level was the hamburger. The PAHs dietary intakes per one meal from home-cooking and dining-out were $2.4\times10^{-3}\;ugTEQ_{BaP}/kg/meal\;and\;4.0\times10^{-3}\;ugTEQ_{BaP}/kg/meal$, respectively. This data showed the PAHs dietary intake from dining-out was about 1.7 times higher than from the home-cooking. The daily PAHs dietary intakes of general Korean adult having two meals from home-cooking and one meal from dining-out per a day were ranged between $8.0\times10^{-3}\~9.7\times10^{-3}\;ugTEQ_{BaP}/gg/day$ and mean value as $8.9\times10^{-3}\~9.7\times10^{-3}\;ugTEQ_{BaP}/gg/day$.

  • 차량에서 인체가 노출되는 진동환경으로서 좌석과 바닥에서의 진동사이에 위상차가 존재하는 경우에 대한 인체의 반응을 주관평가 실험을 통해 분석하였다. 인체가 진동에 민감하게 반응할 뿐만 아니라 인체와 좌석으로 구성되는 진동시스템의 공진주파수와 관련된 2.5, 3.15, 4, 5, 6.3 Hz의 주파수에서, 진동의 크기를 각각 0.25, 0.4, 0.63, 1.0, 1.6m/s$^{2}$로 변화시켜 가며 위상차가 인체의 안락성에 어떻게 영향을 미치는 지를 분석하였다. 두 진동간의 위상차는 진동량이 적을수록, 또 주파수가 낮을수록 인체의 안락성에 악영향을 미쳤다. 진동의 진폭이 0.25m/s$^{2}$ 일 때 위상차가 180.deg.인 경우의 불편함은 0.deg.인 경우보다 2.5배 정도 큰 것으로 나타났다. 특히 현가장치가 장착된 의자의 경우에는 좌석과 바닥진동의 위상차이가 안락성에 미치는 영향을 정량적으로 파악하여 인체-좌석 시스템의 공진주파수를 선정해야 함을 알 수 있다.

Distribution and Potential Human Risk Assessment of Trace Metals in Benthic Fish Collected from the Offshore of Busan, Korea (부산 연근해 저서어류 체내의 미량금속 분포 특성과 잠재적 인체 위해성 평가)

  • Trace metals concentrations in the tissue of edible marine fish (4 species), olive flounder (Paralichthys olivaceus), Korean rockfish (Sebastes schlegelii), file fish (Stephanolepis cirrhifer) and abbysal searobin (Lepidotrigla abyssalis), collected near the Yongho wharf in Busan were determined to assess the potential human health risk (HRA) of trace metals by fish consumption. Levels of Li, Cr, Ni, Cu, Zn, As, Cd, and Pb in the fish tissue were $0.005{\pm}0.009$, $0.77{\pm}0.30$, $0.29{\pm}0.34$, $0.49{\pm}0.14$, $15.96{\pm}2.52$, $10.62{\pm}4.67$, $0.001{\pm}0.002$, and $0.045{\pm}0.06mg/kgdw$ respectively. The estimated daily intakes of Cu and Zn and the estimated weekly intakes of As, Cd, and Pb from the fish collected near the Yongho wharf were 0.0032, 0.054-0.18% of PMTDI (provisional maximum tolerable daily intake) and 13, 0.0041, 0.020% of PTWI (provisional tolerable weekly intake) which were set to evaluate the food safeties by the JFCFA (The Joint FAO/WHO Expert Committee on Food Additives). Lifetime cancer risk and target hazard for local residents due to those fish consumption were found to be negligible.

Analysis of Benzo[a]pyrene Content and Risk Assessment (훈제식육식품 중 벤조피렌 함량 분석 및 안전성 평가)

  • The content of benzo[a]pyrene from 69 smoked meat products commonly consumed in Korean food market was analysed with high performance liquid chromatography. Smoked meat products including smoked chicken, pork, turkey and duck were saponified, extracted and cleaned up to analyze the benzo[a]pyrene content. As a result of analysis from smoked meat products, the mean benzo[a]pyrene content was 0.42 ${\mu}g$/kg and the highest content of benzo[a]pyrene was 2.87 ${\mu}g$/kg detected in smoked chicken product. All somked meat products contained benzo[a]pyrene below the limit regulated by Korean Food and Drug Administration (KFDA). Exposure assessment of benzo[a]pyrene from smoked meat products ingestion was calculated by using National Health and Nutrition Survey (NHNS). The estimated lifetime average daily intake of benzo[a]pyrene was 0.187 ng/kg bw/d. Margin of exposure of benzo[a]pyrene was ranged from 1,657,754 to 3,957,219.

The effects of gamma irradiation on the survival and development of Clonorchis sinensis metacercariae (감마선 조사가 흰쥐에서의 간흡충 생존 및 발육에 미치는 영향)

  • The effects of gamma irradiation on the survival and development of C. sinensis metacercariae were studied to evaluate the feasibility of irradiation as a control measure for clonorchiasis. Pseudorasbora parve were collected at an endemic river of clonorchiasis and were used for irradiation of the fluke in three schemes. The first (Scheme 1) was irradiation of the isolated metacercariae from the fish followed by infection to experimental rats. The second (Scheme 2) was irradiation of the fish, and then the metacercariae were isolated and in(ected to rats. The third (Scheme 3) was irradiation on the rat livers after infection with normal metacercariae. Irradiation doses varied from 5 to 100 Gy for Schemes 1 and 2, and 10 to 25 Gy for Scheme 3. The rats were sacrificed 2 to 6 weeks after infection. In Scheme 1, the metacercariae irradiated at 50 Gy failed to survive in the rats after 2 or 6 weeks. However, 1 to 44% of the metacercariae irradiated at 5∼30 Gy survived. The estimated LD50 of Scheme 1 was 16.5 Gy. The flukes irradiated in Scheme 2 survived better than those in Scheme 1. The average worm recovery rate in 50 Gy was 28%(7∼39% individually). Increasing the dose up to 100 Gy brought a remarkably low survival rate of an average 1%(0∼3% individually). The LD50 of Scheme 2 was 47.5 Gy. Worm recovery rates in the 10 Gy group of Scheme 3 were 21∼39%, and those in the 25 Gy group were 2% and 34%. Although the metacercariae were irradiated, all of the recovered worms were morphologically normal. Only the worms irradiated with 10 Gy or 25 Gy after 9 days from infection in Scheme 3 showed underdeveloped testes and seminal receptacle. The present results suggest that irradiation of the fish by 100 Gy could be adopted as a control measure for clonorchiasis.

  • The wide and growing use of cellular phones has raised the question about the possible health risks associated with radio-frequency electromagnetic fields. It would be helpful for phone users to blow the exposure levels during cellular phone use. But it is very difficult to recognize the amount of exposure, because measuring accurate level of RF is a difficult matter. In this study, we developed a model to estimate the exposure level and the individual risk of exposure by utilizing the available informations that we can get. We used such parameters as usage time a day, total using period, distance between cellular phone and head, slope of cellular phone, hands-free usage, antenna pulled out or not SAR(Specific Absorption Rate) of cellular phone, and flip or folder type. We proposed a model presenting individual risk of RF exposure from level 0 to 10 by using a neural network.

Dietary Risk Assessment for Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons in Foods (식품중 Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons의 위해성평가)

  • This study was executed to determine the cumulative dietary risk of PAHs exposed by food ingestion. Food samples including barbecued beef, barbecued pork, grilled chicken, ham, bacon and vegetable oil which were collected from food markets. These samples were saponified, extracted and cleaned up to purify PAHs, and then the purified sample solutions were analyzed by HPLC-FL. Generally, the levels of total PAHs in barbecued beef (0.2 ppb), bacon (0.3 ppb), barbecued pork (0.7 ppb), ham (0.8 ppb), and vegetable oil (1.2 ppb) were low, whereas the level of total PAHs in grilled chicken (9.3 ppb) was significantly high. For the exposure assessment of PAHs due to food ingestion, PAHs levels converted into TEQ$_{BaP}$, the average body weight for 20-73 age group and consumed levels of food proposed from report on the National Health and Nutrition Survey were used. The estimated lifetime average daily intake of dietary PAHs was 4.32${\times}$10$^{-4}$ $\mu\textrm{g}$-TEQ$_{BaP}$kg/day as the mean value. The dietary risk adjusted to cancer potency of benzo(a)pyrene as 7.3 (mg/kg/day)$^{-1}$ was 3.44${\times}$10$^{-6}$ based on current data.ata.

Analysis and Risk Assessment of Benzo(a)pyrene in Edible Oils (식용유지류 중 벤조피렌의 함량 분석 및 안전성 평가)

  • To assess the health risk for benzo(a)pyrene by the intake of edible oils, 288 cases of edible oils collected from food markets were analysed using the high performance liquid chromatography with fluorescence detector. The levels of benzo(a)pyrene were from non-detection to $4.78{\mu}g/kg$, and the average was $0.11{\mu}g/kg$. The chronic daily exposures of benzo(a)pyrene for total population group and consumer-only group were estimated using the food consumption data in the fifth Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey in 2011. The estimated daily intake of benzo(a)pyrene was $4.26{\times}10^{-3}ng/kg$ b.w./day for total population group and $7.64{\times}10^{-3}ng/kg$ b.w./day for consumer-only group. The MOE (margin of exposure) of benzo(a)pyrene for total population group and consumer-only group was $7.28{\times}10^7{\sim}1.74{\times}10^8$ and $3.95{\times}10^7{\sim}9.42{\times}10^7$, respectively. Accordingly, the health risk from benzo(a)pyrene caused by the intake of edible oils was considered as a very low level.

Assessment of Fluoride Exposure by Oral Health Behaviors using the ConsExpo Model (ConsExpo 모델을 이용한 구강건강행위에 따른 불소노출평가)

  • Oral health behavior such as toothbrushing one's teeth, using dentifrice and such are an important part of improving one's oral health and therefore quality of life. However, it is also necessary to research exposure to harmful chemical substances. Therefore, this study investigated the factors that affect researching fluorine exposure resulting from oral health behavior initiation so that correct oral health guidelines can be provided. As a result of applying the fluorine compound's oral exposure in the ConsExpo 5.0 model, adult males' oral external dose was at 0.000196 mg/kg, oral acute (internal) dose at 0.000196 mg/kg/day and oral chronic (internal) dose at 0.000465 mg/kg/day. In the case of females, the oral dose was at $4.1{\times}10^{-6}mg/kg$, oral acute (internal) dose at $4.1{\times}10^{-6}mg/kg$ and oral chronic (internal) dose at $9.99{\times}10^{-6}mg/kg/day$.

Exposure Assessment of N-nitrosamines in Foods (식품을 통한 니트로사민 노출량 평가)

  • In this study, contamination levels of 7 N-nitrosamine were investigated in processed meat products (n=51), processed fish products (n=62), salted fish pickles (n=20), and beer and malt beverages (n=21) using a GC/PCI-MS/MS method. The limits of detection (LOD) of the N-nitrosamines ranged from 0.2 to 0.5 ${\mu}g$/kg. In addition, methods were used to estimate the recovery of 7 N-nitrosamines, which ranged from 84 to 112%. N-nitrosamines were detected in 89 (58%) out of 154 samples. The exposure of an entire population group to N-nitrosamines through food intake was estimated using the average body weight of the total population and average daily food consumption, to perform risk assessment based on reports of a national health and nutrition survey. The results indicated that the daily intake of N-nitrosamines over a life time was $4.92{\times}10^{-7}$ mg/kg b.w./day. The margin of exposure (MOE) for the general population, estimated using the benchmark dose lower confidence limit 10 ($BMDL_{10}$) of N-nitrosodimethylamine, was 208,939, which was found to be safe.
